OK...we need to stop w/ the bag over the tubs...that's over...this thread needs to be closed or changed in a way to incorporate our new views/ideas on the subject.
100% we're all agreed that keeping your tubs in a trash bag, black, white, opaque, etc.., is just dumb.
Now, we need to continue on the path in which we discuss "to which degree do we restrict GE during Bulk Colonization?"
Well, I've got the new thread...I'll link it....
There's the new discussion

Green mold does not come from using a bag. Green mold comes from contaminated spawn or substrate.
Didn't this get asked and answered several pages ago?
If your reason for not using bags involves prevention of contamination, we're into superstition at this point.

These are 80L tubs with 2.5" holes. These are colonising in my fruiting area so they get lots of light. Its also by a window so they get a lot of air as well.
Pic of sub surface is of the one on top. Its a 1:2 with nominal quarts, but is actually a 1:3 ratio.

Im talking about how much GE is too much b4 you start suppling FAE and getting early pins. I prefer to flush all at once and trigger my pinning not let it just start popping pins whenever it wants. Im the shroom god not the myc.
my plastic wrap isnt sealing anything its just a view port to check on colonization.
I understand myc breaths O2 and gives off Co2 thats why we allow GE but how much is too much since you guys are preaching.
I get full colonization in 1 week or less, with a typical 1:4 ratio, and even less time than that with higher ratios. So do others who make up tubs this way. With this speedy colonization, premature pins aren't gonna happen. You can get this speedy colonization by doing the tubs as described. If you're getting trich, it's something else, possibly your spawn. I have had cultures where trich was hitching a ride on the mycelium on grains, and it took until inoculation of bulk substrate to show up.
Placing the grains on agar showed where the culprit was the whole time.
If I hadn't put it on agar, I would've thought the environment the bulk substrate was in to be the problem.
Also - did I read you spawn to bulk outside, to AVOID contamination?
Spawn in a draft-free area with sanitized air is a much safer option, man. Just sayin'.

That's unfair, and just rude. I certainly would NEVER say something like that on someone's thread. Bad form.

Why not put all that information here?
It's more than just the bag we're talking about here, and have been talking about. It's removing the bag, and colonizing in an environment with light and levels of gas exchange provided via polyfil, which is oftentimes viewed as something to be saved for fruiting. We don't 'need' a new thread for that.
What were you trying to accomplish with such hostility?

I know, and it's that sort of thing that is just not present over at mycotopia. I don't get it.
Like, I thought we were having a discussion about a topic, not suggesting someone's thread should be closed and telling other people what they should be thinking. Sheesh.

Restricting o2 during colonization is good(not suffocating) this will keep the grower in control of when it pins and give a better flush. I use tyvek for my tubs during colonization and either loose polyfill or open holes depending on the season/Rh in the grow room. I am not saying put your tubs in a bag and tie them shut that is crazy and I dont know who has ever suggested that.

Bro, I am not a hater I agree with most things you are posting but there is some confusing things in this thread. I really dont see anyone arguing with you or PP about putting a tub in a sealed bag to colonize. It isn't personal guys I just think this thread is gay or maybe you could change the vibe by changing the title to extremely high CO2 conditions during colonization debate.

my point is it seems your makng hypothetical situations up to try to proove your point, I dont see or hear of anyone sealing up there colonizing substrates. GE is key when colonizing but you guys make it sound like you discovered some secret and thats bs no matter how you spin it.
Im not hating on anything except the fact you keep telling me how I do my shit and I wont get contams if I leave my uncolonized sub exposed to the air.
my contams come from the floor, plain and simple, 20+ yr old carpets harbor lots of nasties and untill your living here and seeing it for yourself dont tell me exposing uncolonized sub is going to fix that.

And 13 shroooms I never said leave uncolonizing subs exposed to air.
Put those words in someone elses mouth. I would never give poor advice out like that!
A tub plugged w/ p-fil is not exposed to air. Your just scared.

Thank you. I appreciate that.
@CH Hell - I started this thread because more than one person, none of which were me, said it should be started. I did, however, want to discuss it. It's not being discussed anymore; it's just one big pissing contest.
...as for your comment about where people have said NOT to provide gas exchange; that hasn't been said anywhere that I know of, and I don't think anyone said it here either. RESTRICTING gas and/or air exchange has been even purported to EXPEDITE colonization, which is not true, and I don't think you need any links for that one.
Lack of FAE and/or GE during colonization is not a good thing. Nature is a good example of this. Fuck, outdoor crops can yield up to 7lbs per square foot! It is also tacit that the bulk substrate was colonized in the EXACT same environment it was fruited in.
I'm not saying you NEED to start doing it the way I do. I simply provided a place for it to be discussed. The open discussion vibe certainly feels completely lost to me now, though, not in part by any ONE person, but yeah, lost nonetheless.
