Does anyone know if this will work with shoeboxes. I don’t have the space for monotubs.

Real shoeboxes have gaps on the rim for air exchange.
They don´t need any additional holes at all,
as they get dry really fast.
Look here.

That’s what I’m doing now. I’ve had good success but for my apes they just aren’t looking good imo. Any idea if apes are a strain that does better in a mono?

Focus more on substrate ratios, top layer thickness, field capacity, etc.  they’re not being choked; it could just be genetics that don’t yield fantastically.  Definitely no need to modify the shoebox or try anything wild.

Personally I'm not a fan of shoeboxes. APE can be very finicky, most people grow them for the potency and the novelty. Expect a lot of culture work to be needed to find high yielding genetics.

Would you recommend a mono tub if I was going to do apes? Or do you think I could try to do 1/4 inch holes in my tub for more fae. I was thinking I could do 4 1/4 inch holes one on each side about 3 inches higher then my substrate normally is. The fuzzy feet make me want to try it.

Going for 22 holes setup for some pan cyan. 2 more on each upper side. Think its gon be enough for pans?

I actually grew pans in these no extra mods. They didn't appreciate the lower FAE but I did get a couple flushes. But ideally I would do pans in a different configuration chamber.

Gonna try with the 4 extra holes see how it goes then. Ill add even more if it doesnt seem like its enough. I just want to grow pans now i dont care about cubes anymore. I guess ill experiment and report back

Will be switching over to this for the new tubs! I miss my old tubs but they were years old and needed replacing!

Hi pasty I could use some of your expertise for a moment please.

So Im trying my first pan cyan ttbvi grows with your ez-dial setup but now I have some doubts.

I have 3x 30L tubs going. I added 2 extra holes on each top side for a bit more fae but It might be just not enough still.

Some tape over some of them during colonization.

One of my tub is further ahead of the others and knots + a few pins started to come up everywhere. (a bit hard to see on pics)

But now its been 3 days and the pins stopped growing so I suspect the fae is just way too low or theres hidden contam.

So for my other 2 tubs going (still colonizing) how would you modify your ez-dial setup to grow pan cyan specifically? How many holes do you think I could drill extra on the top side, and should I add some at the bottom as well or no?

Another option is to just keep the same amount of holes as you and have a fan running on low in the room on a timer.

What do you think?

I know it might not be the best design for pans but im willing to experiment with these 2 tubs I have going. I really want one of them to succeed now for the summer :frown:

thank you

A lot of considerations. More holes and a fan would help but you need to take care to not go too overboard. A fan might be a good place to start, if that doesn't dry it out but it still needs help, consider a few more holes.

Personally I feel monos are not well suited for pans. The thin sub often can't keep up with RH needs even if FAE is insufficient to begin with. Even tho I did pans with these with no further modifications, it was far from ideal. I liked a chamber of my own design that I did for pans.it was like a SGFC but with fewer holes and I used hydroton so I could see how fast it was drying out. Its heavy but way better than perlite.

Also a big issue I had when I had pans stall was temps. 70 is definitely too cool IMO. Not sure if thats a factor or not but I had to use extra space heaters near the tubs for them to do well.

I know monos arent ideal but from looking at the thread pans in monotubs I wanna give it a shot.
Some have some pretty awesome grows anyway so its possible.

The temp is 75f.

I guess i will start with a fan running 5-10 mins per 2 hours in the room.

If i was to add more holes would you add some on top only or also at the bottom on the long side

Sounds like a good plan but I'd try to get those temps a bit higher. Pans love high 70's to low 80's. They need it a lot warmer than cubes do.

I have high hopes for that one. Looks real nice white as a cloud and the smell is so good, kinda sweet.

Gonna case it tomorrow. I must not fuckup this one

Hi pasty. This is the same tub but on the 4th day of being cased.

Quite a bit of overlay :frown:

The holes were opened up as soon as I cased it.

How did your ez dial of pans look when you grew them this way? Did you also get a bunch of overlay like that?

Does it mean I need more fae

Pans are highly prone to overlay. The ones I did in tubs were actually from a wild lineage collected in Hawaii. Those did not overlay as bad as most others. With really overlay prone genetics, there is often little you can do. Increasing FAE can help but it’s not a cure all. In your case you can try leaving the lid unlatched or even propped up under the handle.

I’ll be honest, there were some varieties of pans I could never get to pin. Pan cyan Jamaican were like that, they could overlay in a tray on my table. Very finicky. Good luck 🤞

Been a while since someone posted here...but I came across the thread a few weeks ago, had a 55qt bin and some PE spawn so I rolled the dice and went with it. First ever PE attempt. This is how it looks today, first time I cracked the tub just to get a pic. Haven't had to mist at all, humid area I live in and even with AC going, room ia steady in the low 70s and obviously not dry.

Two questions:

Should this be cased?

Do I need to initiate fruiting here somehow or is this legit just let it go?

Is there a thick top layer of coir? Penis envy strains like a either a thick casing of coir or a real peat moss casing. If not then your first flush might have a lot of blobs instead of nice mushrooms.

So if theres no top layer you should add one. Either add more coir on top or a pasteurized peat moss/vermiculate/ calcium carbonate casing
