But at the beginning in this thread they were saying that taping the holes during colonization was bad, because you wont allow GE.

really cause i see tc's saying to tape, check franks or tls mono goude

so he leave the lid unsealed for GE but does he sealed the lid for Fruiting and let their holes/poly do the work? or just the lid unsealed all the time? so is not important at all to sealed the lid.
What about this, Seal the lid and during colonization, tape all the holes except 1 and then stuff with tight polyfil, then for fruiting just remove tape from holes and stuff with the polyfil setup you told me (4 holes at the bottom with tight polyfil and 2 holes at the top with loose polyfil)

i'm sure it would work just not neccesary tote lids always have an imperfect seal

TOte lids dont actually seal and if your using a mono with a height good for growing shrooms its got a lot of air in it from the start so its not really going to build up a toxic lvl of co2 and cause stalling.
FAE wholes during fruiting are like cronic said, as loose as you can make them on the top and as tight as you can make them on the bottom. Its a good place to start anyways. Then you have to dial them in. The goal being that you want the bottom tight enough so that you get about a 1 inch ring of dryness around the bottom holes and loose enough on the top to provide a strip of dry the width of your holes from your top holes down to your substrate. Rest of tub will be condensate.

in the colonization stage, you will benefit from high levels of CO2,and very low AE, only GE is allowed, in order to do that, the polyfil in the holes must be very tight and when is in the fruiting stage (100% colonized) the polyfil have to be very loosy for more AE holes should be taped up. When fruiting then you stuff them with polyfill.

sorry i dont get the explanation about why the bottom tight and the top loose, 1 inch ring of dryness? what?
just to be clear, i just leave the lid unsealed in the colonization process and in the fruiting stage i seal the lid with tape? or just leave the lid unsealed in both (colonization and fruiting)
"Sealed" in quotes because yes nothing is really sealed at all.

Leave it "unsealed" the whole time. Just with the lid on. No tape or nothin.
Top holes loose and bottom tight so that it creates a current of fresh air that causes evaporation of surface moisture on the substrate (a main pinning trigger)without drying it out. Most air escapes and flows through top holes. If the holes near your sub are too loose it will dry out too fast.
Yes 1 inch ring of dryness around the bottom holes filled with polyfill once fruiting is what you want to see. If you have less loosen it some. If you have more tighten it.

Epic read! Up, down, and back up!! A noob(ish) here, bumping to be able to read some hidden threads. I think I'll need to construct 4 mono's, with slightly different GE and FAE scenarios, to do a proper side by side...

I know this is an old as heck thread. I have read everything humanly possible and one question goes unanswered. When you spawn to fruiting conditions, do you need to mist while it is colonizing? The common sense answer may be to mist if looks like it is drying out, but it is very hard to tell the surface moisture condition while mycelium is young and spongy. It glistens but I am assuming it does not need water droplets on it yet? I know that condensation has a negative effect on jars and bags when colonizing, so I assume it would be the same with young myc colonizing a bulk sub?

you shouldnt need to mist or rehydrate until after the 1st flush b4 the 2nd, never do anything to a colonizing substrate, let it finish b4 making adjustments. condensation wont hurt as long as its not so much that its pooling at the bottom, if so dump the excess off. Ive had floating substrates from condensation, as long as you dump the excess youre good.

Thanks man. I think I am a little confused as to the surface condition when colonizing vs. surface condition once it is actually fruiting (developing the little knots that will be pins). I was thinking it needed to have the small droplets of water on it at all times, but that does not seem to be the case. I have seen many colonized subs that are not full of tiny water droplets. I guess it kind of dries a tad while colonizing and then you need to mist once it is ready to fruit?

no misting unless you are in fruiting and the surface looks dry, nothing is to be done while colonizing until its 100% finished.
no fresh air exchange only gas exchange during colonization, no misting during colonization, only during fruiting should you make any adjustments.
look up damion5050s elementary coir tek, or Bods EZ AF coir tek or Franks 12 steps to monotubs for better references.
