So for manure based substrates how long do you guys pasteurize for? Seems like some go for a really long time like 8 hours at 150f. But if you ask AI about it it says its not good to do that. Why is that?

So whats actually true for pasteurization time. I see many trusted cultivators doing 8+ hours

I would say it depends on how you pasteurize. So the main goal is to kill off competitive organisms, but keep the beneficial bacteria. In order to achieve that without partially sterilizing the outer layer of substrate while you wait for the core to reach the right temperature you will have to go slow and steady.

I usually go for 65Β°C(150Β°F), with my equipment that means I can't go any higher then 70Β°C(158Β°F) in order to make sure nothing gets partially sterilized. With those temperatures it is going to take about 2-6 hours(depending on the amount of substrate) for the core to reach 65Β°C(150Β°F), and I would still need to hold that temperature for 2 hours, and probably another 2-6 hours for it to come back down to room temperature.

If I had to use a completely closed off vessel like a jar or vakuum bags to submerge the substrate in a sous vide setup that would be a lot of time for non beneficial anaerobic bacteria to get a foothold and I do not want that :uhoh:

If that was my only pasteurizing option I would spread out the substrate in more jars or vacuum bags to quickly reach the core temperature and only hold it for 1-2 hours before pulling them out and provide more oxygen even though that won't allow for much of an increased population of beneficial bacteria.

With my setup the substrate never gets anaerobic and therefore I don't need to worry about that at all and can run longer pasteurizing times. Well that wasn't much of a quick answer(sorry Nichrome), but I hope it provided some insight at least

Millet flakes? I'll keep an eye out for that.

Mateja, I have a question β€” when you use oat flakes, do you grind them into flour or use them as is?

I never thought about it, but cereal flakes are already "pre-treated" with heat, which should reduce microbial load and slightly increase the success rate without a PC.

So, unmodified latching shoe storage boxes don't have problems with FAE? No need to drill an extra hole or what have you (in general)?

Forgive me, I've seen the teks, but it still kinda blows me mind, last time I fruited something was 14 years ago in a SGFC. A slight slack in the lid and those mostly covered tiny holes at the latches just don't seem like much?

Nope! All you do is leave the lid unlatched

Any extra considerations to fruit ATL7 in such a set up? Will a pseudo casing of straight coir do it? Or is Jiffy Mix better?

Im using jars with grain spawn filtered lids or mushroom grow bags with a filter patch  in a sous-vide water bath. Im currently doing 8 hours for manure and 6 hours at 155f for casing. Do you think thats optimal for my setup?

What spawn to coir ratios you prefer?

Bags are slower to get to core temp, depending on how much you are doing at one time, the depth of the bag matters.  Jars are so fast, it takes about 30-35 to get up to core temperature, then it's all about managing the temperature of the water since you know you are in the 140+ zone.  I have done the whole process in about 4 hours to spawn (90-120 minutes, I prefer 150-160 range), once jars are removed from the hot bath, 1.5-2 hours later they are cool.  Bags are a different beast, and the process is longer (1 - 1.5 hours depending on amount, just to get to core temperature within range), but you can also do WAY more at one time, if you have a tall canner, 1/2 gallon jars work too.

Using them as is was my least favourite, ive chopped them up before with a kitchen knife but that's not very effective way to do it, other than that I've tried a different variation of breakfast type rolled oats labelled "small rolled oats" or "easily cooked" they look like normal rolled oats only about 1/3 in size.

Next time i try rolled Coir/rolled oats cakes again imma probably try mixing in some other stuff as well to see if it sticks less, something like perlite or pumice

For jars and closed filter bags, I would just monitor the substrat/casing core and as soon as it gets to the right temperature set a timer, do 2 hours and pull them out.

Absolutely, @Kloakk the core temp is all that matters, I do two 45-minute timers (after the 35-minute core heating), heat up pot for about a 1 minute or so in-between to get the water back to 160, cya in 45 minutes, lather, rinse, and repeat for the last 45.  I can either pull them now from the bath or let it ride and get the full two hours before being below 140F (60 C).

I used to do 3 1-gallon zip lock bags for about 12 quarts at a time, for larger runs, it's all the same game once core is in range, faster, or slower, it all works, I use my PC and plenty of water to hold the heat.  Jars 2 hours, you can pretty much count on 3.5 - 4 with bags and cool off is longer with blocks or zips.

You can always open up and check the middle jar. I have considered getting one of those wireless meat thermometers, but they are too expensive where I live when the setup I have works just fine

Get you one of these, I also have an analog one for backup.  I used to have one of those really nice Taylor thermometer/timers, but it wore out after many uses and I went with the portable device.  Once you know your timeframes (data), the thermometer is mainly to keep track of water temp.

My setup is way overkill, but I already had everything because I brew beer, but if anyone is interested it can be seen here.

Edit: I don't use bags unless I'm testing different substrates, I have two 5 liter PP5 buckets I just stack on top of each other.
