That looks wetter than it should be but also clean. Metabolites are usually stress response, and are redbull colored (clear yellow-amber-ish). Bacterial liquid is cloudy or more blotchy.

If that water wasn't there before, it makes me wonder if the whole block is shrinking and creating space, squeezing liquid out etc. What's your FAE/ventillation like on there? If there's a lot, that could explain it. Or it's just mixed a bit wet. Regardless, it invites trouble, but it isn't trouble in itself. Looks fine to me.

Here's some tidal wave from halloween of last year. Oops.

You can see some dried metabolites at the bottom for color reference.

It's been 11 days since inoculation. They don't have a metal lid; instead, they have a tightly wrapped double layer of aluminum foil with four holes, and a relatively loose single layer of aluminum foil on top.

Here is a cake from another batch that is already starting to form condensation in the mycelium area.

And hey... Has your Tidal Wave cake shrunk this much?

Well that would certainly do it rofl. Probably more evap than a filter disc. Honestly your contam rates with this method are phenomenal so far. You're livin dangerous but it's workin for ya. I literally knocked on wood after typing that. Safety first and all.

Thanks, haha.

Obviously, they have an inch of dry vermiculite on top.

I also hope they hold up, although I'm very aware they could take a turn for the worse at any moment.

Worst case scenario, with other batches I can try reducing the water ratio in the substrate or just birth them earlier so they can consolidate in the fruiting chamber.

'At least there's water' โ€” now I have to eat my words.

The ol foil on the drinking glass is something Iโ€™ve not seen in a long time. Can be made to work but is obviously pretty fragile and easy to compromise. Donโ€™t pick em up a lot js my recommendation.

So I was wondering about liquid cultures. I see people selling them and I always thought they werenโ€™t legal because the spores germinated but it seems a ton of people sell them. Are they legal in the states and is there any increased risk buying those instead of spore prints and syringes?

They sell them because they are for microscopic purposes only.

They still risk being contaminated. So agar cleaning can/will be necessary .

I am not a lawyer. But.

The DEA has been unusually cash money about both their position, and how clearly they put it in writing: if it doesn't contain scheduled active chemicals (psilocybin, psilocin, etc), it's legal. In the past this distinction was murkier and people guessed at the line being spores, but the DEA has specifically drawn the line at "the presence of the chemical", which moves the line forward into the mycelial lifecycle.

Where in the lifecycle? That's the tricky bit. At a point in the life of the mycelium, before it produces a mushroom, it will produce these chemicals. Myc will blue in a tub. It will blue on a petri sometimes. A culture that is chemically legal can be mailed to you and, on the way, mature to a point that it is chemically illegal.

This distinction sounds scary but it doesn't actually matter at all, for two reasons. First, it's not worth LE's time to litigate this technicality, both in terms of payoff and in terms of risk that some precedent gets set that isn't in their favor or something. And second, because that's not what they'd charge you with anyway. Intent to produce drugs is a crime, typically. Regardless of whether you actually make it all the way to drugs, or just get ready to.

In that sense, spores and LC are the same amount of illegal: if they can prove you have intent to cultivate, that's a paddlin. If you get caught with just a syringe, a microscope, and a bachelors in biology, you're probably gonna walk. If you get caught with a syringe, two monotubs, a brick of coir, and have 24 tabs of the shroomery open, it doesn't matter how legal the spores are, that's a paddlin. Your syringe could be total bunk from an IG scammer and contain literal unadulterated spring water. Still a paddlin. The attempt is a crime, the ingredients are just details.

TL;DR they're basically the same amount of illegal.

So basically if you arenโ€™t being a dumbass and telling everyone and selling itโ€™s basically the same.

Yep, I remember seeing in some documentary about the legalization movement about the DEA guys really not giving much of a shit as long as the cultivator was not selling

What's the fastest germination time you guys have experienced for spores?

For me it's 4 days from a mss

A swedish mycologist I know saw germination of fresh spores under the scope in like 4 hours or something. I know I have seen fresh (taken that day) visibly germ in 24 hours. Fresh is fast.

With Colorado's laws, I don't think anyone cares what I'm doing, as long as I'm not selling fruit. With the amount of LC and spores I have, I don't think I will have to worry about ordering anything for years.

Anyone measure how many liters of coir comes from a brick? Also how much water do yall add?
I use the same brand ive always used (its not not your typical coco coir) usually I get around 10L (as advertized on the lable, mixed with 3L Water) This time I ended up with just under 6L of coco coir :mad2:

Did it the exact same way as always, boiled 3L water and poured it on the brick inside a 15L tub and closed the lid. I dont like when doing the same thing produces different results, i really dont like that

So for manure based substrates how long do you guys pasteurize for? Seems like some go for a really long time like 8 hours at 150f. But if you ask AI about it it says its not good to do that. Why is that?

So whats actually true for pasteurization time. I see many trusted cultivators doing 8+ hours

4 to 6 hours I think though 10 hrs a lot of ppl do for oven sterilizing because they're ovens automatically shutoff after 10 hrs

Bricks vary a lot in weight,
sometimes in a range +/- 50 grams,
So i weigh stuff beforehand,
and mutiply by ~4 for water content in ml.
Maybe the bricks are also processed and compressed different.
Also water holding capacity differs from different brands.
In the end always fits 3 shoeboxes for me.
