It's me again. This is my second shoe box. It's 16 days old. What do you think?

Unfortunately, nothing's happening. The lid is on the box. The surface actually looks fine in terms of moisture. Is it normal that nothing's happening yet? Should I just be patient? Or is there anything I can do to encourage pinning?

Depends on your spawn to sub ratio, genetics, it's not uncommon to take 20+ days from s2b to pin.

I used a 1:1 ratio. So, I’ll just have to keep being patient.

Does that mean that if it fruiting ,and I make a clone of it—the clone would also take just as long?

Thank you for you reply. Much appreciated.
I have put pseudo casing layer after spawn from Coco and Vermiculite.

Lets see, i will be patient then and give an update if something chances.

Interestingly the mycelium seems to be quite aggressive colonizing grand and sub really fast.

If they are true natalensis and not ochraceocentra, then yes, they are reputed to take quite a long time compared to cubes. I have had several tubs fail to produce anything or even show any contam after several months. They colonized and then did nothing else. The rare fruits that I got were not hardy at all. That project has been moved to the back burner for me.

Have you cased them and if so, what was the casing? Also, check out the Nat thread for more specific recommendations. There are very few people growing true nats, so the information on indoor cultivation is pretty limited.

Question regarding a liner.

I am going to send a jar of pe6 to bulk in a few days. Im wondering, should the tub have a liner? I've read that they help keep the sub from getting gross because of water drippage, as a result of the pe taking so long to fruit. Thoughts?

I ve got boxes slightly bigger than a shoebox / the standard sterilite.

If 1 mycoquart : 3 qt coir + top layer gives me a 5cm substrate, is it enough r should i put 2 mycoquart + 6 qt coir + top layer?

Asking cuz after some research i ve stumbled upon an answer stating 4.5cm substrate is quite low.

Btw by substrate i mean spawn + coir mixed. If the word is wrong please correct me.

Thanks!

I've done both and both work, I prefer using 2 jars, especially if I'm growing APE's or any other variety that I want more then 1 flush from.

IME pe varieties do grow better with a thicker substrate and pseudo casing. So based on your specs, I would go with the second option of doubling up.

They do grow in a thinner subs. I almost always spawn to bulk in meal prep trays which are only a about 5 to 8 cm deep, just because it fits my workflow better. But generally, I get much bigger and healthier looking fruits from cubes and especially PE varieties if the substrate is 10+ cm before the top layer.

So many different factors can determine how long things take. But in my experience, clone cultures will TYPICALLY pin fasterr and more consistently than multispore ones.

A couple thoughts here:

The only real reason I ever have for going lower on the spawning ratio is if I'm trying to sneak something through that's obviously kinda fucked already, so I just want to get it colonized and fruiting ASAP before things collapse. Either that, or just "I've got this one last jar to spawn and don't want to prep more coir, I guess it's gonna be light on coir."

Otherwise, extra coir isn't really that big a deal. Healthy mycelium will still chew through it pretty quickly. Also, more coir means more moisture in the mix, and bette rodds of getting through a flush or two without having to worry too much about rehydrating.

But also, compressing substrates has been a game-changer for me. You can pack more coir into your substrate and then just compress it down to your desired height. Also, less space for the myc to traverse to get to all that coir and water.

Thanks folks.

I ve got 36h shoeboxes sitting rn that did not really take off yet, I think i ll try to mix two together and see what happens vs the 1 myco : 3 coir ones.

If it s a bad idea feel free to tell me

As usual, loving you folks thanks

Edit : Traven, what ratio are you aiming in general? Curious abt it. I keep reading 1:3 or 1:4 is a good number. Thanks!

Nah, do whatever makes sense to you. Remember, when people make larger tubs, they always mix quarts together. I don't, just due to contamination-related PTSD plus being stuck in my ways, but it's perfectly fine and acceptable thing to do.

I honestly couldn't tell you a ratio, at least not a volumetric one. As I mentioned recently in this thread, I don't measure my hydrated coir. I just use it. I think right now I'm running around 6 or 7 quarts per bucket of coir, with a bucket of coir being 3 bricks plus ~6.5 quarts/liters of water. And that's one quart of grain going into a 6-quart Sterilite shoebox, and compressed to a thickness of about 2 inches.

I guess there's some calculations that could be done to convert that into something more useful lol

If we use the P9 tek, he uses 1:6 ratio and that can take forever.

I would think extra coir past that point would start having a negative effect if you had a slow colonizing pheno. Be it from drying out or even the slightest contam winning.

When it came to weighing out my ABV when I was messing around with the P9 and ratios, I didn’t see a lot of weight difference between the 1:3 tubs and the 1:4 tubs though.

Keep in mind stipe came on this tek with PE in mind, and one of the goals was first flush is all.

I've done a tiny fraction of the number of boxes stipe has, and I can't do the 1:6 as I don't have the room to fruit them in larger tubs (shoeboxes). But what he and all the other TCs harp on rings true, clean spawn is 99+% of the game. I do shoes, and according to stipes regs of 50 to 70% of coir water transmitted to fruits regularly hit 60-70 so am happy there. That's with a 1:3 or 4 ratio.

Quick lc question . Can anyone tell me why myc would float to the top of the jar ? When it generally stays on the bottom of the jar ? I’ve got a jar that the myc is staying at the top after mixing

Should clarify. The 1:3 and 1:4 ratios were the base part of the tek.

Still used 1.5 for top layer in 66qt tub with 4 quarts spawn.

The ABV grows from same culture we’re all around 2.5kwet. The higher two weights were definetly from the 1:4 base, just not high enough where I would stress it out imho.

And yes. The one and done was the main reason I liked the tek. Just gotta work on my LITFA game and I’m golden.

Yep.

Like I said, I really don't een know how to quote ratios and I probably haven't read any of the teks you're talking about either.

But it's all about the health and speed of the spawn. And honestly, in my experience, no, slow colonization in and of itself doesn't really lead to issues with drying or contamination. If your tubs are drying out just from sitting there, while not even fully colonized, then there's something pretty wrong with your setup. And it really seems to me that super slow growth is usually hand-in-hand with contams that started on the grain and then got the upper hand during the expansion-to-coir phase. Coir that sits around just isn't going to do very much. I've even used coir that sat too long and developed that wispy white water mold on it, didn't matter in the least once the cube myc was in the picture.
