Dreamer is fine, as long as they get enough humidity no problem with air, just keep an eye on them so the bottles don't get filled with water.

Any reason to not use my dreamer tub with subtropicalis? It’s a new setup so I’m wanting to put it through its paces and have a dozen Muda bottles cased and starting to pin.

I transferred them to the Dreamer from an unmodded tub where I was misting a couple of times a day.

Humidifier is on auto at 90%; fan is on the lowest setting. Pin set is coming in nicely it seems.

But I’m a bit confused on whether they will get too much FAE in the dreamer tub? I understand a Dreamer isn’t necessary but it’s sitting there all rigged up and I figured it would be good to test it out.

I don't think there is such a thing asToo much fae.... As long as they don't dry out....

My jars were growing so well until they triched out - again!
Unlike the first time, at least the mycelium seemed very happy for a couple of weeks this time. I'm calling that progress!

Also, one my owergrown agar cups grew a baby. I'm gonna clone it!

That's interesting!  What would the best additive to the coir substrate be for semps?  I know they're fine with just coir, but what's optimal... wc, manure, etc...?

For example, last year I started adding manure to all my cubes and they were much prettier and especially they were much more dense than straight coir, or coir-verm.

MicoZ has a good writeup on subtroptricalis

They're secondary decomposers, more of a forest floor species, not dung loving primary decomposers.

Prefer higher carbon or lignocellulosic over higher nitrogen

So manure might be fine if it's not very much, composted is preferable.
Wormcastings  is my go-to and some shredded straw

Leaf decay/twigs (hwfp), grass (straw), sand

I Will try a leafy composte some day soon.

I tried composted leaves and grass clippings, pans loved it, subtrops did way better on plain coir.

I'm gonna try composted masters mix with a verm casing. Do y'all case after the sub is fully colonized or more of a top layer at spawning?

Spores germinated quickly, clean print

Both... Top layer, and usually a late casing (sprinkle)

Thanks to all who have contributed to this megathread. Semps are by far my favourite mushroom.

I have been growing them with good success over the last 4 years, but have hit a wall and my grows are just the pits at the moment. Thinking of starting fresh.

Anyone have a spare print (slow genetics)?

Finally got a good flush out of this box. Had a terrible grow last year, but managed to clone one of the clusters. This shoebox took over 2 months to finally produce something other than side pins. I was ready to throw in the towel and flooded it for a few days in desperation. A week later I had tons of pins. It was a a good lesson in moisture content with these guys. I have a newer box that I am flooding early to see what happens.

Semps are the only mushrooms I want to grow really. I so prefer them to cubes.

Flush was 18g dry in the end
Sub - 50/50 verm coir ... Casing 50/50 peat verm

You've got a rating by 9999999999 so that's good enough for me. I probably have an extra swab...not sure which- it's been slow.    It's been fast

after a long morning shower

my thoughts on why they love to get wet.
subtropicalis stems are, compared to many others, extremely fibrous (is that a word?) when they are fresh their stems can be hard and long to chew (let alone dry!)
so, extra moisture is very welcome as it supports growth by balancing out their very nature.
also moisture means evap, means cooler stems, moisture points mycelium towards growth- probably another advantage compared to warm dryness on the stem especially when the road to spores is loooooong.

just putting some thoughts out…

Update on the struggling tray and the casing. The mushrooms became MUCH larger and looks healthier all over after seeing a thin vermiculite casing to the tray.

Without casing.

With casing.

These are just hands down the prettiest mushrooms of them all... Perfect in every single way.
