Nice comparison.

Yeah.. I think I would retire that to the compost pile and start again. It might eek out some fruits without casing given time, but that's quite a difference.

Finally got a good flush out of this box. Had a terrible grow last year, but managed to clone one of the clusters. This shoebox took over 2 months to finally produce something other than side pins. I was ready to throw in the towel and flooded it for a few days in desperation. A week later I had tons of pins. It was a a good lesson in moisture content with these guys. I have a newer box that I am flooding early to see what happens.

Semps are the only mushrooms I want to grow really. I so prefer them to cubes.

Flush was 18g dry in the end
Sub - 50/50 verm coir ... Casing 50/50 peat verm

Years ago when semper viva first appeared, the story was Semper viva means "4 or more flushes" and is a strain you do supplement, so it has fuel to keep going. This was all pre-coir

I'm sitting here wondering if coir came along and they "live forever", but they're too hungry and thirsty to flush again. I haven't seen anything where people are posting fourth flush.

These are your favorites and I wanted to ask what all substrates you have used and if its all been coir.....?

I also think there was talk about remixing in fresh nutrition, like shaking a spawn jar and the thing would keep going.

Maybe I missed it, but it's like nobody seems to know this now. I just wonder if it got lost because of the massive switch over to choir and choir doesn't give it enough on its own for 3rd and 4th flushes?

I will get ahold of some and give the theory a try based on the stuff we were doing when they first appeared, but I just wanted to put that out there, to find out if I'm completely wrong and everybody knows this?

coir is just a medium to deliver water. We give so much more nutrition, with grain, than these organisms have available in the wild.

Here's a 4th flush coming from this jar I have near the bathroom window since February:

1st and 3rd flush... somehow I've already deleted the 2nd since this gallery keeps asking me to delete pics cuz it's always full :oldman:

4th coming

what amazes me is that the sub dosen't shrink... I do mist daily, but even when I soak between flushes all the water stays above surface and the cake dosen't float...

Yes, you're getting 4 flushes and they are fine looking.

Some of you are really crushing it, but I feel like I'm failing big time. I did my due diligence and read the hell out of these two threads.

Thread 1

Thread 2

However, it seems there is conflicting information regarding substrate. I see that the initially suggestion was to wring the hell out of the sub so it was on the drier side. Also that they may not like FAE. But in another grow log it says they do awesome in a JCM chamber and love to be wet!

I currently have 4 different trays under different conditions... converted EZ dial with perlite, a pair of JCM fruiting chambers, etc but not a single pin after 15 days.

Do I just have bad genetics? Am I too impatient? Should I just dub tub these and say screw it? Any suggestions would be welcomed!

In my experience they prefer substrate on the dry side of field capacity, but once they start to pin they love to be wet. The more FAE you give the better, but you have to keep them wet.

That said, they will do well with minimal FAE to keep them wet. Seems to grow more of the spaghetti fruit with the lower FAE.

Also these are semperviva, it’s not unusual for them to take many weeks to pin. They are slow, but worth the wait.

My Melgo line can pin in 15 days sometimes, but my hindsight and RockinRobot-'bell cap' can take 30 to 60 or more. So some is genetic and some can be conditions. But everything RoscoeReturns said is dead on the money.

That's interesting and not something I thought about really. I had multiple flushes on plain coir subs a couple years ago. I actually had a better second flush than the first. Then they grew sporadically for many months after that.

I have tried mixing in supplements like coffee, sand, gypsum, and a bunch of other stuff I can't really remember right now, sorry. The outcome was the same as coir though really. I think moisture content and FAE is more important with these little guys.

I'd be interested to see your experiment though.

is there an established yield metric for these? So a fella knows when he has a good culture... What is the upper end of acceptable cultures?

Like with cubes for example, I reckon personally any culture that does a pound wet from a quart of grain on the first flush is worth working with a bit and cloning from etc

Anyone likes to venture a similar sort of metric for Semps please?

I know I am probably underperforming some, last tub there was 350g on the first flush from two quarts to a brick of coir. I had a lot of skinny fruits and obviously need to run these less like cubes

Would love to know what peak performance looks like for those running simple passive tub setups please guys?

Thanks
