Faht and my own experiments are proving that pans are a lot easier than folks assume.  The biggest hurdle is clean spawn and managing the casing layer.  I've been fruiting things at 72-75 all winter.  The oxygen requirements aren't as bad as folks think (Stamets lists them as 5000ppm co2, which is much more than a lot of gourmets will tolerate).

What they do like is a fresh air exchange once or twice an hour to promote evaporation.  Faht is doing this with a fan on a timer blowing on his grow space, and fruiting things in Ziplocks.  Going overboard with air makes casings much harder to manage.  They'll dry out, then get overwatered.  The mycelium can't breathe and stalls.

Anyway, I'll probably stick to pans and probably start a woodlover bed in the spring.  For me, it's about hyper focus.  I like to find my niche and stick with it.  That niche just wasn't cubes.

You kinda make it sound like pans are the way that a lot of people think cubes are lol

Just starting on this journey with some ttvbi spores I got from flapping bird.  Gonna try them in a jcm ISH tub and some faht style ziplocks.  Next up on my list is subtropicalis

I have a couple more exotic species that I look forward to growing in the future, but for now I'm really just looking to stock up on enough P. cubensis that I don't feel like I have to ration my supply. Until such a time that I have enough to share with friends and still regularly experience stronger trips on my own I can't quite justify making other species my priority.

That said, I hope to get some cultures going relatively soon so that I can start experimenting! I've got some P. azurescens, P. ochraceocentrata, and come autumn I'll make sure to collect some P. semilanceata as well. I don't expect to be successful for quite some time, but I can't wait to get started!

Probably the most difficult part is that they are less forgiving of bacteria.  And casing is a whole art imo.

But yeah, clean spawn, good surface conditions.  And a bit of periodic evaporation with a fan.  Touch higher temps.  Nitrogen but there's plenty in popcorn and probably other grains.

I think these were the sixth flush off a cup of cased popcorn.  I put them back in the chamber because I don't need the space and they're still going fine

My friends like cubes so I grow them cubes. I grow exotics for myself and a select group of friends. I like variety. I love the way all mushrooms look but there is something special about non cube species. The community has been so giving. I now have 9 new exotic species to work with. Those are all on agar. Stoked for 2026.

Exotics are a psyop by big peat to get you to buy peat for "casing"

Maybe jiffy mix.  I grow a lot of pans and still haven't finished a single $15 bail of peat (though I probably will this year).

I can't even grow cubes anymore, so squandering an exotic culture seems wrong.

oh boy im trying. I'm worried that my climate is too hot for woodlovers to survive over the summers but hopefully with some sprinklers and coir/dirt on top of the chips it'll keep the mycelium alive and healthy!

I plan on trying my hand at Pan Cyans in monotubs once my grow space is a little more dialed. For anyone interested in this I recommend This Tek.

Other than that, my biggest concern is my wife kicking my ass when she comes home and I'm in the kitchen boiling cow shit

Edit: After reading through the entire thread I like the idea of making a manure compost tea to hydrate the coir. You guys rock

Are they?

Apparently, African Transkei was reclassified as Orchas, but Ive grown Natals, and they seem pretty different from each other.

That "What species can I grow?" thread sounds really cool. You should totally take on that project. For science :havesomescience: :mushdance:

You can have Cubensis strains that can outperform an exotic or considered more potent mushroom. Z-Strain came in at 3-4% psilocybin content when I had it tested years back off an isolate/mono-culture; spanked the azures. It started going APE...

I have more fun chasing gourmet stuff and breeding it.

Woah woah woah let's not get carried away here 😂

Besides dude. It's about different alkaloid levels. Not the overall psilocybin content. Maybe PE is potent as fuck BUT for all you know, something as weak as caerulescens could be your favorite.

Exotics are expected to be stupid strong, by most people, but that's not the case. There are tons of exotics that are weak as shit. So what, you have to eat more. Maybe it's worth it though.

Alright I'll make the thread! I'll enjoy it if it gets some traffic!

@Nate, I'm sure they'll survive! There's plenty that will probably even thrive in the heat. Not sure where you're at though 🤔 Mescaleroensis for instance likes it really hot! I'm talking above 90°F! And then you have pretty much anything in Section Caerulescentes of course. Niveotropicalis, thaiaerugineomaculans, thaiduplicatocystidiata, subaeruginascens (more than likely,) wayanadensis probably. Im sure gandalfiana and hopii too.

At the end of the day tho, does it really matter if you fail? It's better to try and fail than to not try at all. Not trying is just guaranteed failure. I'd rather try.

I agree completely. I remember when the rec laws passed for cannabis and all anyone started caring about was THC%. There's so much more to holistic medicines than just the primary active compounds. Plus, I've never eaten a handful of cubes and thought "Yeah, these really just aren't doing it."
:canthelpbutlaugh:

Side note: Count me in on the "What Can I Grow" Thread! I'd love to learn what other options might work well with my setup.

With cannabis, I think the initial seeds for all that were sown by interdiction, too.

First they cracked down on the outdoor landrace coming from tropical countries, then they started up CAMP and the like and cracked down on acclimatized varieties grown outdoors in northern latitudes. Which then pushed things indoors. Old school lights were expensive as fuck and expensive to run, so then naturally people bred the strongest possible weed they could. But "strong" is a relative term. With every percentage point of THC you add, you're altering the overall ratio between THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids.

And don't get me started on low-quality extracts and edibles from miscellaneous trim sources. Not every 10 mg of THC is created equal, that's for damn sure.

I just wanted to add that I haven't used manure in a single exotic grow, I use cow manure compost, it's smells and basically is, soil, it works great really, i sift it and use straight out the bag.

That's what I use for my manure tea. I don't even sift it. I just stir it in water and strain any solids. Sifting is a PITA for me because I haven't built a dedicated rig for it.

If either of you fine gentlemen care to elaborate further on these techniques, I'm all ears lol

Might fuck around and try a hybrid Manure Tea/Pan Monotub Tek.

Morning Rhyzo :hatsoff: well here anyway :muppet:

So the easiest recipe I've used with good results is just 70/30, coir/cow manure compost. I sift the compost, bring the coir to field capacity, mix and pasteurize for 2 hours at 60°C(140°F) after reaching core temperature.

The bag I use look like this, but if you're in US, black kow is a good option.

I scoop out 2-3 quarts of composted manure and dump it into my coir weight × 4.25 worth of water. I give it a stir and dump it through a strainer. I also add some micronutrients.

I then pasteurize the water until it's between 140-160f for an hour and use it to hydrate the coir. I use a crock pot and an ink bird temperature controller with a probe to pasteurize.

My setup isn't standard, but I can set and forget my pasteurization and be confident that it never reached sterilization temps.
