First time grower in need of some guidance

So I bought my all in one pre colonised grow bag, and waited eagerly for it's arrival. I've been swotting up in the week it took.
I soon realised I should have looked at this kind of thing before I chose the strain I'd try, in my one and only chance of success. Knowing what I do now, I might not have based my choice on, "Google what's the strongest magic mushroom known to man". Although Knowing me, I might have still gone with APE.
Anyway, I'm gonna try post a couple of pics to show my pathetic set up. If anyone is able to spot any glaring errors please let me know. I've got no idea. I do have 6 years of plant cultivation experience, I'm a good study and I blasted scrubbed myself an spare room to an inch of our lives.
I'd be ever so grateful for any assistance. I'm not even sure if I'm posting this in the correct place. But hay ho!

I'm not sure if the silence is, cos I've posted it in the wrong place, or it's so perfect in every way, it's pointless to even comment. I know what my money is on.

Regardless I have done my best, I will be happy to tell you all the outcome, in hopefully 3 to 4 weeks.

I will add my thoughts on the all in one grow bag experience.
It was really fun and I can see it being a good hobby. I'd love to see it being as straightforward as the description in the cloud920 ape221 grow bag instructions. The only issue I had was the clip. I'd never seen a clip like it. So covered in disinfectant, masked and gloved, surrounded by the stuff I'd need at the critical moment, I ended up faffing with the clip for a good few minutes, panicking and cursing my idiocy. I could almost feel the invisible bacteria over running us, but I took a breath and mastered this new style of clip. If it's a total failure and I cultivate nothing but slime, I'm just gonna assume it was the clip that did it.
All the advice says that people are put off by failure. I'm already planning my second attempt. A bit of success would be nice, so if there's anyone who is able to point me in the right direction, it'd be good.

I think it's pretty common for people to think their first time is the "one and only" shot they have in this hobby, only to get drawn in by the process of growing different kinds of mushrooms.

I can't really offer advise on your setup but I can say that it wouldn't hurt to get familiar with the site and read a few TEKS. That's how I learned years ago and I am back now looking for new approaches and information on new species and newly growable species.

PF TEK is a good way to start and leads to good results without too much investment. Read the Hitchhikers Guide that is widely linked on the site and good luck on your grow

Thanks for that mate. And that's exactly what I was thinking. I definitely should have started with this forum. There's a ton of great info. An I will get the hang of it. Thanks again, and I will certainly be back to show off my W's and asking for help with my L's.
But like I said earlier, having not grown a thing, it's been really good fun. I can only imagine the fun I might have if I actually managed to do it.

Is that a heat mat under the bag? Never used one myself but I've heard that they can cause problems. Better to heat to room instead if you can.

Yeah that's a heat mat. After reading up on the optimal temps specifically for APE221, Which is supposedly 23 degrees c. Living in Northern England, even in the mild winter we're having now, I'd struggle to keep it at 23c and it would be prohibitively expensive. I will certainly think about losing the box. But I have decided to not touch it for a week or two. The instructions say to handle it as little as possible.

Temperature is one of the last things to worry about. If you're comfortable wearing a tshirt, the mushrooms will grow fine. Anywhere above 18c is just fine.

The heating pad will dry out and kill the mycelium. This forum is full of posts doing just that.

I don't claim to have a clue what I'm doing with the grow bags. I'm looking at it as a bit of fun, and despite all the promotional info from the various companies, that pitch it as almost fool proof. I understand now that I haven't given myself the very best opportunity for success as I could have. I'm certainly gonna give it a second go. I wanna go through the entire process for a better idea of the set up. I'll definitely get a strain designed for a fresher.
I do have years of experience with temperature and humidity control in my yard. I like how you put it. And I'm embarrassed to admit that it's rarely comfortable in just a T, due to the greed of the energy company's and the capture of a labour government by special interests. My house being 150 years old with the horse hair insulation of the 19th century to prove it. I'd need to blast my heating 24/7 to get it up to 20 plus Celsius. The instructions say 23 degrees is optimal, I thought it better to be over than under, my thinking being, it slows growth, giving the inevitable contaminates the time to overrun my precious fun guys.
It's difficult to be precise too, as I don't have a very practical thermometer
The instructions specifically say that it's best to get a heat mat in a northern European country in winter. They were selling heat mats though.

Generally, if you are forced to choose cooler is always better than warmer. The mycelium does grow faster at warmer temperatures  but so do contaminations. Things like bacteria explode at warmer temperatures.

If you want to stick with the mat, it would be best to find a way so that the bag isn't touching the mat. Direct heat always causes problems

That's exactly what I was reading up on right now. I so wish I would have come here first. Cos I'm not sure if I actually do need one as  much as I imagined. The majority of the advice is that it basically cooks it. There's a few alternatives to them. The instructions definitely say 23 degrees Celsius and the strain is a slow grower, so knowing that I struggle to keep my house warm in winter, I thought just get what it says you need. I'd probably be reading up on how to raise the temp right now. I certainly could keep my house in the 16 to 18 degrees c range, it's the cost I worry about. I tend to heat the room I'm in, so bed and living room, with a little leki heater. But I set up in the spare room, so I wasn't going in and out of the room. I need to do something about it, as it is too high right now by a few degrees.
I plan to raise it higher from the pad. It's sat on a couple of pencils now, in it's box. I've seen that raising it lowers the temperature, so that's what I'm gonna do, till I get it to 23 degrees c.
The cloud920 ape221 instructions do warn about the dangers of it drying out and saying keep an eye on it and if it looks like it's drying, mist the sides of the bag.

One thing I never anticipated when I began this project. Was how blasted brilliant it would be to join a forum, post on it and get some cool feedback from people who I'd never get chance to talk to in my regular world. The fact that it's a great help for me, makes me really glad I decided to go for it.
Having spent the last 2 years either foraging in the country or in the mean streets of Yorkshire with pretty poor results. I figured this can't be any harder, turns out it's way more fun too.

So I get it's only day two, and it was foolish of me to get stuck into the truffles that came with my grow kit, on the day I was setting up the temperamental and tricky business of mycology. I'd been waiting impatiently for it to arrive in my defence.
Now I've managed to get the apparently optimum temperature for ape221, on the thermometer at least, I'm aware of the lack of precision on that. And the bag looks happy enough. I've taken it out of the box too.
I've decided to stick to my initial setup. Especially with it at the temp I wanted and seems to be stable. If I see any sign of it drying out, I'll be pro active.
No doubt you guys will have had enough of me prattling on so I'll thank you all for your patience and help, I hope I'm on here doing exactly the same in a few years.
Win lose or draw, I will give an update on a couple of weeks.

Take some decent closeup pictures of the bag from the front and the side. Take daily pictures from the same angle and distance to compare growth.
Do some reading while your bag incubates.

Mycelium is exothermic, which means it's probably a couple of degrees warmer inside the bag, If you can keep your room at about 20°C you're good and should ditch the heating mat.

Now you don't have to go anywhere, we love prattling around here, so if you want to just hang around we have a prattling thread where almost anything goes.

Another good thing to do here is reading the HHG, it's packed with great information :awesomenod:

Welcome aboard! Glad that you decided to join us :cool::mushroom2: you are clever for already thinking about a second attempt. That's the right mentality. I feel like I'm always making grain spawn  :hehehe: I really hope the apes grow for ya though.

Temperature is no biggie. My grow space for cubes is 17.2c degrees right now, and was 12.3 last night. Still harvesting regularly no problem. They just grow more slowly. Ideal no, possible, absolutely.

Many start with an AIO bag and if lucky, find their way over here. If I had known then what I know now, I would have started with PF TEK.

Well that's quite brilliant. I didn't consider that I'd be so warmly welcomed into a community. In my circle of friends, it's frowned on to even admit you have feelings, let alone wanting to explore them and your motivations. It was my wicked good mum who's a psychotherapist and started on this "journey" maybe 10 years ago. But I'm pretty much doing it alone. I've always fancied myself with a pen, so I didn't really give any thought about people actually reading it.
I'm gonna try keep it brief as to not waste anyone's time and I'll try keep my razor sharp wit to a minimum. I'm definitely gonna stick around and post regular updates. I like to think that I can do anything I put my mind and resources to, if it's possible, practical and worth it. I am already thinking about scaling up (which I shouldn't, since I'm far from growing anything. But I have the space for a few "monotubs" is it, or maybe a "Martha" tent. I do work and have other horticultural responsibilities. So I don't want to take on too much. It'd be nice to have a good little set up, ticking away in the background.

Hey there. I'm definitely new at this, but I was having the same issue that you're referring to. I live in a very old drafty house, so I decided to try some heat mats. As our friend above said, do not put them directly on the mats. I did this, and my jars went from feeling very cold, to very very warm. Like too warm. I used some metal grates that are for drying venison, put the jars on the drying grates, and I believe it has helped speed up my colonization. I'm a complete Noob, so time will tell. Good Luck!
