Re: First time grower in need of some guidance [Re: bodean74]
    #29459936 -

I'm so bummed, I musta put a tenner in cleaning and anti bacteria product, gloves mask, i even took a bath before I opened the box.
My whole plan was to scrub the room and spot it was going, an in a haze of disinfectant, slick hand sanitizer get the temp to 23 degrees c and pretty much leave it B for a few weeks. I've been working on the principle that contamination is my main worry. Knowing my house and the instructions, I just bought the mat.
But if I asked you guys for advice and you're good enough to give it. I wanted to have a right good squizz at it, before just rolling forward with my obviously flawed plan. An I was shocked to see how quick I was to kill my poor fungus. It's notoriously slow, so I will assume I'm not growing that. There's definitely something happening. But it's not anything described in the instructions. I'm gonna take some close pics, which is why I was lamenting my pathetic attempts at not contaminating it. An no one is gonna believe this, but I have a colour deficiency, not colour blind, but I can struggle with some colours. It's never been more of a laugh in my family when I think my jumper is a colour it's not. It also stopped me from becoming an electrician about 10 years ago, which was a tough one to swallow. But it's disabling me again. Cos I am almost certain that the thing that's growing on the stuff it came with is golden. That's why I think it's just me an it's probably green or brown. I'm gonna switch off the mat, but if it's obviously not gonna work. I'd rather just start over.
Stand by for the pics.

You REALLY need to take a step back, then take a couple of days reading and digesting  The HitchHikers Guide Thoroughly.

Sterility is only a requirement when inoculating agar or grain/cakes. Sterility during these stages is of ABSOLUTE importance however. Mushrooms are the HARDEST EASY thing I ever grew. When I say that, I simply mean that they are quite simple to grow but they have a HUGE learning curve.

Once you have healthy mycellium on cakes or grain jars sterility no longer matters.

I afta confess to reading the 2 lines in the blurb about 23c and northern European winter and right below was a heat mat for sale. I have been wanting one for another project, not enough to get one, cos it's just a time issue. But when I read that, I thought i was being clever.
Which has forced me to actually think about the problem. An the solution is pretty obvious. If my little leki heater makes a room comfy for me in a t shirt at an acceptable cost. It'll do the same for the shrooms. So starting tomorrow I will be heating the room to the right temperature. I'm thinking 20c ish.
I'm also starting to wonder if I shouldn't start picking the next one. Or few, as I wanna do maybe 3 bags, pre colonised for time, an a strain that's as indestructible as poss, but I really want em to be legit shrooms. The lad's think I'm crackers, but they're always raiding my stash, so I need to come correct.
I'm gonna start with this "hitchhikers guide" thing recommended and go from there.

:whathesaid:

And yes, wait for some daylight and take new pictures, the ones you uploaded ain't helping  With the heat mat gone, your bag will do it's thing and you should just chill as there isn't much to do at this stage. Just provide better pictures so we can have a look and as you said, read the HHG to make a plan for the next grow

Let me start by thanking you for putting me on to that Hitchhikers guide
I'm not sure if the actual practical advice is appropriate for me at the stage I'm at, and I'm not sure if I could achieve that kind of skill, dedication and financial commitment. But I certainly do wanna try grow at home, and you are bang right, it's the perfect place to start. Forget about cultivating mushrooms, it was a bloody good craic as entertainment. The "battlefield" analogy makes perfect sense to me and I am beginning to formulate my second, hopefully successful assault on the Everest that is mushroom cultivation.
I was sad to reach the end, and got stuck straight into the YouTube videos, but fell asleep on episode 3, I don't know if it's meant to be, but I found it bloody hilarious.
I'm very grateful for your help.

Hi guys
First let me start by bowing to your guys superior knowledge. The next time everyone is pretty much telling me the same thing, like "lose the heat mat" I won't be quoting the vendors instructions to you. I'll just go remove the heat mat. After reading the HHS, I feel a bit silly for thinking that I could do this with one shot, using the most difficult type, with zero knowledge and expect to produce something close to the pic on the box. I know how adverts work, "cloud920" aren't gonna say anything to put me off purchasing their products. I am not complaining about that bit, cos I'm pretty impressed with their stuff and unless you guys tell me different, I think I'm gonna stick with the company I stumbled upon. They seem to be pretty cool and willing to help. The problem, if there was one, was with me. Which is why I feel genuinely fortunate to have full on randomly found this perfect place for help, advice and hopefully a laugh. I've never joined a forum let alone post pics and essays.
I'm gonna do some more pics to show you guys.
I'm planning to order 3  more pre colonised grow bags. Should I get the same strain or 3 different. I think I should get "golden teacher" I just don't know if it's better to spread the risk by getting 2 other, supposedly easy strains?
Thanks guys

Early days mate. Keep reading and learning and you will get there in no time. Not many here will recommend the aio grow bag kits though, pf tek or agar is the way to go. pf tek can be done cheap with minimal gear. As far as which variety to choose, you can't go wrong with golden teacher or any of the classic cubensis varieties.

Have you considered starting from agar?

Even if you want to be lazy you can buy the liquid culture, prepoured sterile agar plates, and an inflatable still air box on Amazon for cheap and do it the right way with minimal effort.

It's weird that you're asking for help choosing which button to press, when you have already skipped so much, but my advice is... Maybe get a variety so that way if you decide to store the genetics to grow in the future you have a few options to choose from.

I'm not sure how much a pre-colonized grow bag is going for nowadays but I wouldn't trust it man. Just spend the money on the right tools instead.

There's no real risk in growing a bunch of "easy"strains. I've been a fan of the classic looking cubes since the beginning. I can assure you they will be plenty potent if that is your concern :shroomin:

Ferryman is on the money, and money relates as well! aio is fine for starting out. But they cost a lot more and are often associated with higher failure rates. It's the gamble of expecting somebody else to properly produce and sterilize your materials for you. Not saying aios can't work, they absolutely can. Just feel you should know that they often involve more heartache and money than PF Tek or agar to grain to bulk, especially in the long run.

But, hey, if you simply don't have the time, but do have the money, gotta start somewhere! Nothing wrong with that. Best of luck:cool::mushroom2:

I totally agree with you, and in  most aspects of my life, I try stick to that (I haven't always, I've a long and storied history of fucking up) and it's not the hard work, it's an irony that as I near 50 and find my once straight jacked all action hard body is beginning to fail me, as I get to the age when I'm mature enough to get the maximum out of said hard body. I've learnt to enjoy the satisfaction of hard work done well. I'm sure it's within my budget too. As daunting as cultures, plates etc are, it's a lot for me to take on.
It's not an excuse, but take today, I was going to have a look at them for the first time today. My dad's neighbour rang to say my poor old Dah has been round again cos his electric is off. He's just gone 83 in Jan, he's running out of marbles fast, so I help as much as possible. I adta drop everything an go. I'm not complaining I wanna do it. I also work and I have another time consuming hobby, that I haven't yet mastered in 6 years.
My hopes were to do this easy or lazy option, actually grow shrooms and go from there.
I can only apologise for being weird, but I feel you, and I already fear I might be bitten by this "bug" I keep reading about.
Thanks for your message. Sorry if I'm lame and weird. I am genuinely like this. I'm just a bit more forward behind this keyboard. I'm glad I was tho. Cos it's been cool at doing this.

Guys I must bow to your superior knowledge. I've been living here over 20 years, I know this house. But you guys know mushrooms. I'm genuinely stunned, cos the heat mat was not only unnecessary, it's raas clart detrimental. The bag is generating plenty of heat all on its own. The room was never over 15/16c this time of year (the weather is crazy af mild and wet, a Yorkshire winter used to include 4ft of snow every year, when I were a lad), the heat mat had it at 27c. All I've done is turn the mat off last night. No heater or heating on. An you can see for yourself the temps.
I'm not daft enough to think it improves my chances, I guess the damage is done, but lesson learnt. An I was just looking at the 3 pre colonised grow bag deal they have. I'm thinking "Albino Golden Teacher", "Cascadian Teacher" and "Mac Galatic". 2 are down as beginners and all 3 are rated 5 star.

As an experienced noob, if I were starting over knowing what I know now, I would go with PF TEK from the beginning, it has been the easiest and so far has been a success.

It's more than just a hobby, it is often as good as a job, and I genuinely love doing it and still can't believe it. Apparently it's quite a common pathway to this, so I've been told. I don't wanna be disrespectful or precious about it, but it's more than just frowned upon where I live. I'm not scared enough to not write this, but I'd rather not say, until I'm more aware of the craic in here. Not that I imagine anyone would bother with me, I'm just a guy who has wasted his best years, no longer understands the world, and I don't think I even want to take part in the world they're presenting to me now.
And I wasn't complaining about the old man, as horrible as it is to watch. I wouldn't be writing this now if it didn't happen. I was a long term addict a total mess and 2 years ago this last October 14th I stopped, and looking after him was a big part of why it stuck this time. I never had any desire to take care of myself, but I'd worry that we'd not have veg for a while when it comes to my dad.
Probably just like all families, its complicated, cos he was a difficult father to have, let's say.
I'm not sure why I am boring everyone with it, but it is what it is.
Hence I wanna grow shrooms

You're not bothering anyone bud, most of us has some kind of baggage, like I said, head on over to the confessional booth, even if it's just to read, and get a feel of what some of us do in between the cultivation stuff  :awesomenod:

And nice work kicking the addiction, you rock brother

I've ditched the mat completely. It seems perfectly happy without it. The temperature is definitely not at the 23°c the "optimal" temp in my instructions. But it didn't seem to be helping, I couldn't control the temperature and it seems to produce heat itself. I'm gonna keep an eye on it, and there's a flaw in my electric heater to get the entire room up to temp plan. It's a fan heater, so will blow air. Which I don't think is a good thing. So I'm gonna afta invest in a halogen heater, I think they're called. They're only 20 odd bar, but as I look today, in this mild wet, supposed winter. The bag is saying it's 20°c and it seems fine, so now I'm just gonna do the thing I knew I would be good at. Patience. I'm used to working in 4 weeks cycles too, so it's just a regular wednesday round here.
I'll keep you posted
