If it colonizes fully, it's good. If it stalls, you might see the effects of low moisture content, or bacteria, or something else. Interfere with it now and chances are it will just contaminate and you'll miss the opportunity to see what a dried up cake looks like.

My slow germers never stalled, for what it's worth.

[attempting to post this again as I think my first attempt may have gotten lost in The ether-void]

What is the current prevailing opinion on modding plastic jar lids for spawn jars?

I'm getting ready to start my first grow and as a total noob, the simplicity of unmoded lids is attractive to me, and I believe that I'm sharp enough to tighten them before picking up jars (I swear, I'm relatively sharp).

However if there is there is a really compelling reason for me to be modifying lids before I start I'd love to know now before I get going.

I hope this isn't too general of a question.

Get a full sfd. Put it under your unmodded lid. Dont bother loosening it.

I am assuming you aren’t referring to Pf tek?

Why bother modding them? I use wide mouth plastic lids.

You should have a SAB anyways and once the jars are inoculated you should be opening them anyways.

I’ve never used modified lids. Seems like more of a hassle/vector for contam than just leaving a lid slightly unscrewed.

I have used these. They work well for up to a couple months unrefrigerated and much longer in cold storage without a vacuum seal.

They have the tear notches above the zip so you could put a heat seal on them to show that they had not been opened yet. However, the notch makes them rely on the zip seal to be air tight. That is fine if that is what you are after, just something to note. Also, they have a clear window on one side, which I like to see what is inside. The window material seems to be of the same material as the mylar in texture but transparent. If you want full light blocking, these are not it.

is 15 min too short to boil oats? i usually do 20 but my oats seemed too wet so i did 15 and stopped when i saw some grains burst.

I tried unmodded and hated it.  I glue quarter sized sfd to the top of my jars with rtv silicone and it’s worked great for close to a decade.

I have a bunch of blank folded cards with envelopes I bought for mailing prints and cultures. Those work great for storing prints, too. I have one card+envelope each for varieties I printed myself (since I'll wind up with a bunch of prints at a time). For prints I receive I'll label it by species or genus, writing down on the envelope what's inside.

I make folded prints with largeish margins, and I know where they came from, and I usually don't hang on to most of those for long, so those tend to go into the card directly. I'll often put prints I receive into little zipper bags (if they didn't already come that way) and write on them who they came from, before putting into the cards.

Sweet! Are you using a silica pack in them? I’ve also read shooting a blast of argon or nitrogen in the bag helps preserve freshness as well. Have you tried that?

Also good info! Like I asked Rev above, have you ever used a blast of argon or nitrogen in the bag while or before sealing the bag to preserve freshness? I’ve read that is really a good thing to do. It’s used commercially in a lot of jerky, chips and other snacks to displace oxygen.
