Maybe, but I transfer from most of my plates long before they're colonized, and also I know what Trichoderma looks like before it starts to sporulate. So I'd probably toss the plate before it had a chance to turn green.

I think it's more likely your spawn was a little bacterial and/or not fully colonized before sending to bulk. Bacterial spawn makes for weak mycelial growth, leaving room for competitors.

I've also had a whole batch of shoeboxes from multiple spawn jars (different cultures) that looked clean go green before fruiting. I started being more careful about cleaning out old tubs, and I stopped compressing the substrate quite so much - anaerobic substrate is another way to give competitors a foothold.

One time I had a killer looking jar, recovered quick from a shake, colonized really well, very clean looking.

Then I shook it a second time and it erupted in a cloud of green that wasnt there when I started the shake

Filter failure is also no one to rule out

Yes, for instance, Penis Envy doesn't drop spores but you can rub one out of it with a q-tip, just rub it in the gills.

Are those low-spore x7x+ a cross? The look lighter in color too than usual. Or just came out that way?

Neat!

Hey Nektar, was hoping to see you!:mushroom2: These were from a spore print in DV8DUG's x7x+ give away. I don't believe they are a cross. I narrowed the genetics down over 5 transfers, going for the most rhizo growth before they even hit grain. guessing it just came out this way.

I'll give the gils a swab then and try to get germination on agar. I've made a bunch of clone plates from the fruits in the bottom picture. There was also the one mushroom that did drop spores so I cloned and swabbed that as well.

Really hoping these can be replicated! They've been fun to grow:mushroom2:

Definitely not.

But the truth is, we just don't know. It could have been introduced and gotten a foothold at any point in the process. After all, that cloud of green had to be a network of off-white first. Which could have been lurking somewhere in the interior of the jar since the very beginning, just got a foothold due to an invisible bacterial infection, etc. I think it's unlikely that we're eliminating ALL trich spores from our jars. My working hypothesis is that it's just not terribly aggressive until conditions are just right, and healthy colonizing mushroom myc can usually take out just-starting-to-germinate Trichoderma spores.

I've had a couple cultures that looked absolutely amazing up until the last stages of colonization or the first stages of spawning, at which point they'd turn green. Narrowing it down to specific cultures told me that it wasn't an issue with any one jar or substrate source. Seeing the green turn up inside colonizing jars told me that the trich was already in the jar one way or another. Crappy lid? Introduced during the transfer? Enmeshed in the myc on the plate and just chillin? I don't know. My best guess is still that they were shot-through with bacteria and unable to fend anything off. I resolved the issue by ditching those culture lines and growing other ones lol

If it was actually sporeless than the answer is no lol, PE makes spores it's just not good at ejection, but you will see the gills go purple , beefs gt for example simply doesn't make spores

Ahhhh okay, I see. They can be anywhere from low spore to sporeless. But there is a distinction. Thanks for clearing that up for me guys! I've only grown classic cubes so the low to no spore thing isnt something I'm used to :hehehe::mushroom2:

True that, I've got a sporeless oyster culture on the way I'm going to try out soon. I've heard the taste is different, but need to find out for myself.
