First time using brown rice and coco coir, wondering on a casing layer. Do I use the coir or vermiculite and how thick should it be (sorry, two questions I guess).

If this is cubensis, you dont need to bother with it. If you wanna do it anyway though, add enough to cover the myc, or 1/4" if you need a more quantitive amount to eye.

Vermiculite makes more sense to me than coir, but that is backed up by nothing but my gut and should be taken for the opinion that it is.

Well, for what it's worth, my gut tells me that I never want to buy another bag of vermiculite for as long as I live

Can't say I blame ya. The one bag I've purchased was overpriced and dusty af. I think I'd rather just use coir for pf cakes...

I've still got a good brick worth hydrated since july.  I just used to spawn a a semp jar from the same time period.

I literally just finished the 10 lb of brick of coir  I hydrated back  at the end of july as well.

Its always  stored in my orange igloo and was still perfectly hydrated.

That's actually why I like to make so much at a time. Basically you have as much on hand as you need for anything at any given time pretty much.

How long do you guys usually let myceliated Semperviva grains sit before you dehydrate it? Seems like it becomes crazy potent around a year but do you guys leave it for such a long time or do you dehydrate it sooner?

My jars are getting close to 100% colonized! Trying to time things out with the social calendar and getting the grain spawn into my tubs.

Would it be better to:

1) prep the coir a little early, and it maybe sits for a day or three while waiting for colonization to finish

Or

2) have the jars sit around a for a day or three when fully colonized, waiting for a chance to do my bucket tek.

Yeah, that's not the time scale we're talking about here. It's a question of weeks, not days. Though I will add that "colonized" is a squishy enough concept that spawning "the second it's colonized" is probably not the best idea. So for that reason, I'd suggest waiting to make the coir until you THINK your jars are colonized, then giving them a shake and letting everything sit another week.

Fwiw this is the jar I'm asking for. The others are a little less densely colonized

Id rather consolidate spawn than leave prepped coir around. It can be kept hydrated but its bitten me before. Especially if I dodnt let my water boil very long

I don't like having to bust up super consolidated spawn, but I typically let things get ahead of me to the point where that's pretty much all I end up dealing with lol

Does trich show up on agar? All my agar plates are mostly clean but trich seems to be popping up in almost every tub I have going.

^ yeah it would, but it can also be enmeshed. Mostly clean is not good enough, make sure do to transfers before going to grain.

could be contamination during your inoculation with the agar as well.

My questions:

I forgot a small paper bag of fresh shrooms in the fridge, they are now cracker dry. Would they be bunk, or is that a somewhat valid way of drying them?

Then, I might've fucked up and thrown out my spore print collection during a cleaning frenzy. I still have agar, especially of the wild varieties. Would fahtlocks be the most efficient way to get a bunch of prints?

If your plates had trichoderma, I'd expect to see sporulation on the plate at some point. What exactly do you mean by "mostly clean"?

I think it's more likely your spawn was a little bacterial and/or not fully colonized before sending to bulk. Bacterial spawn makes for weak mycelial growth, leaving room for competitors.

I've also had a whole batch of shoeboxes from multiple spawn jars (different cultures) that looked clean go green before fruiting. I started being more careful about cleaning out old tubs, and I stopped compressing the substrate quite so much - anaerobic substrate is another way to give competitors a foothold.

It can get onto agar every once in a while, but not too often. Honestly, your environment/techniques would have to be pretty awful for that to be a regular thing, outside of plates started from spore prints and whatnot. Though it does beg the question: could you spot it in the mix if you saw it? Trichoderma behaves in a simlar fashiob to the fungi we're trying to cultivate: it sporulates after a period of aggressive colonization. So it would be perfectly plausible for someone to do a bunch of agar transfers that included Trichoderma mycelium, and simply not know what it was until it finally took over a portion of a tub and kicked out spores.

If trich is turning up in almost every tub, then it's extremely unlikely that your plates are mostly clean. It's honestly best to just stop thinking that way altogether, as most people struggle for a long time before they get truly clean culture lines on truly clean plates. In fact, I'd wager that the vast majority of tubs being spawned (mine included) are fighting off various amounts of contamination, and in a death race against the crap that came along for a ride.

Trichoderma spores are EVERYwhere. It's part of nature's cleanup crew. It typically doesn't get a foothold until the spores manage to germinate on certain types of dead or dying organic matter. As soon as you spawn in open air, everything you're working with is being exposed to trichoderma.

The most likely explanation here is that your spawn is infected with bacteria, and that's weakening the mycelium to the point where it can't fight off baby Trich with the usual chemical warfare cocktails. Also, it's senescing and giving the trich a place to move into and start a family.
