The stones aren't going anywhere & will be available whenever you feel like the flushes are diminishing enough that the real estate they're taking up would be better utilized by a fresh substrate. So, unless you have another shoebox or whatever that requires a place in the JCM, why not utilize this time to get a feel for spending time with them & misting till they're happy.

Even in near 100% humidity, with proper air flow, a substrate will lose moisture - this is good & natural. Atl/Tampa can handle getting swamped (as 99.99 has repeatedly shown "putting holes in the bottom of a tray to drain excess water") so mist heavily and see where it takes you. You can tell by the weight of a tray how saturated it is &, over time, you'll get a feel for it by practice...when you first spawned it at field capacity to after a few flushes/rehydrated.

I never 'dunked' a mexicana/tampanensis tray like I did cubensis (never found the need) but I imagine it's possible if you choose that route. I just don't have personal experience with that so I can't speak with confidence, but sounds good in theory...misting as needed has always been kind to me & my personal preference with these species'. Mexicanae family is very energy efficient and can flush for a long time - albeit, like mentioned before, you'll certainly get more 'bang for your buck' by having replacement substrates ready after a certain point. It's all up to you & your needs or preference.

Man thanks for that info! I can’t put holes in the bottom of it now, but I can definitely keep misting the heck out of it. Can the fruits handle misting? I have fruits now for a 3rd flush but they are slow and definitely drying up. The boxes are way lighter than when I spawned them. I wish I had weighed them at that time so I’d know where I am now. Do you think they could handle a little bottom watering? I think I can definitely get a really good subsequent flush with some decent hydration.

The mushrooms are just fine if you mist them, water will not do anything to make them abort . The only thing that will be detrimental is if they can’t drain the excess water from the substrate

As far as the stones in the substrate goes, I have found that the mushrooms actually use the stones to fruit and at the end of my harvest almost every stone is gone from the substrate

I was surprised and fascinated to find they had pinned directly off the stones. Plucked clusters and they had stones for a "root". Very cool!

Can I just add substrate to the top of my stone fruit grains and pray for fruit. Or is it more complicated than that?

You can case straight colonized grains then send it to the terrarium with stone producers but fruits are going to be likely small and scarce.
Probably won't print well either, but it still will work.


If you did add it to substrate/bulk, wait for it to colonize THEN add a casing and fruit.
Running at room temperature it only takes a bit to colonize bulk.
You may need to rehydrate the substrate during colonizing.

El boso- That's how I do it. I harvest the stones & case the leftover grains. Works well. It's my favorite means because it's mostly for novelty & "waste not, want not" ♻️ since sclerotia is my overall objective. You can still get a decent harvest of fruit...

I know what wedgie is saying though, depends on your needs & goals. One can also remove the stones and use leftover grains as spawn for a bulk substrate. Options. 😁

Casing grains may be a quicker, less vectors of contamination route, but also more "hands on"... requires misting as needed etc. It's not so suited for "automation" as a thick bulk substrate would be.

First successful grow of Mexicana A (Tamps apparently) fairly neglected, been fruiting for over 2 weeks and spawned over 2 months ago, it’s a funny one


Cap fell off one of the fruits so I pulled it, if I ironed out the kinks we’d be looking at over 40cm, keep in mind it’s hooked around the ruler at both ends 😂

I gave my shoeboxes a good rehydration this morning with heavy misting and bottom watering then pouring off the excess after an hour or so. All my fruits have perked up and grew a bit! :awesomenod:

My cool mist is set for 15 minutes on and 15 off.
This also adds for fresh air inside the Martha


I’m using a 105qt JCM tub. The lid is lifted slight on one end. The water is kept 78-79°f. The humidity has been 97-99%. There is a small fam near the tub that is pulling air away from the tub. When it kicks on, the humidity drops to 85%. It comes on for a half hour every four hours. I don’t mist until I am done harvesting each time. Maybe I wasn’t misting enough.

Id change that misting to 15 minutes every hour if you can keep the water from pooling up
Cubes work very well in tubs and such but orhers like pans and all the stone versions seem to like the martha better
I admit the jack frost I’ve grown lately look lots better in tubs and they are much drier

Yes i use this on a automatic timer, but this is made for a large surface light the inside of a Martha not a tub

So over a year ago, before I officially joined the Shroomery, I bought an Ecosphere 3.0 kit from Midwest. I ended up not using it. I actually posted about it on here a bunch of months ago. It came with this humidifier. I’m actually thinking of assembling this whole thing to grow oyster mushrooms. But I’m sure I can use it for things that flourish in a JCM tub too.

Yes thats fine just put it on a timer and use it outside of your tub and pip in the mist to add fresh air
