It helps to take a really small sample, like, scrape some inner tissue with a scalpel, or do a Josex' poke, especially if you're still working on your SAB game.

And once again: congrats Hippie! That's great news! My kids are the most awesome project in my life.
Enjoy every moment! Pregnancy has its ups and downs, but overall it's magical. Enjoy the last of your relatively uninterrupted time together. And it's a terrible cliche, but they grow up fast, really damn fast, enjoy every minute of it! My son turns 13 in a month and he's 1.73 m. I have spent way more time with him than any other dad I know IRL, but it feels like I just blinked, once, and this huge guy emerged from a very small cradle.
All the best to you and the aspiring mother!

Then they turn 21 and 19 and you’re still confused at where the time went.

Kids are awesome. Definitely curveballs all around. But rewarding.

I want to gear up to grow one of the exotic species. I haven't sourced anything yet. In your experience, what (if any) is the most forgiving species of exotic?

Ime, it goes, cubensis, ochraceocentrata, tampanensis then subtropicalis. After that it is a bigger jump to nutritious substrate species which increases the difficulty.

However, if you were asking me which to try after mastering cubes, I would recommend jumping straight to subtropicalis. They are noticeably different in potency and trip character, more so than ochra and tamps in my opinion, without being much more difficult to work with. YMMV

I'll look into these! Thanks, Rev!

Edit: How does Pan Cyan stack up in terms of experience and cult? Was considering trying to cult some Pan sclerotia.

It's a mono tub with the bottom inch or so filled with water.
Then using a trivet, you have your cakes above it.

Tamps are one of the sclerotia producers, probably the easiest. If you want to work with stones, I would start there. Pan Cinct is supposed to produce tiny pseudo stones, but I don't think the stones are of much use.

Pans Cyan generally require a nutritious substrate to preform well. And nutritious substrates require that your sterile work be really dialed in. They require pasteurizing and/or sterilizing the subs and casings in addition to really on point agar work. They also require more fresh air while maintaining high humidity, which takes some more effort. They can be grown in tubs, dreamers, jcm or tents, but each has its pros and cons with a fair bit of dialing in. They are worth it once you are ready to commit to them because they are fast and potent, but they can be discouraging when starting out.

Thanks for everyone's feedback and assistance as I got rolling

that is very even colonization so if I were you I'd look into what is different about the end that fruited.

I noticed two things:

1. The sub thickness is uneven. I knew this tub had a high corner from the start, but I had already smoothed, compressed, and pseudo-cased by the time I noticed, and it didn't seem bad enough to muck with at the time...

2. The other side has notably dryer surface conditions. Still moist enough to see condensation on the sides and lid, but not nearly as much nice water beading. The sub has also already started to pull away from the sides--more significantly on the side with all the growth obviously, but a little even on the other side.

Some of the veils already broke on a small number of fruits and they were opening up and getting ready to sporulate, so I plucked those and threw them in the dehydrator. Still plenty growing though, and the dryer side still has a fair number of pins, but growing slower. The ones I picked were fairly small fruits though.. Not sure if due to genetics, available water, or what, since this is my first really productive monotub grow, and my first grow from this particular vendor LC.

Should I bottom water? Mist? Throw some micropore tape over some of the holes? LITFA?

Thanks crew!

Prob like a month if not agitated depends on nutrients ect as well

Sometimes it can take a few days for LC to take off on agar but usually faster than spores

Pretty much like how long it takes for an agar transfer to fuzz up and take off again

Great info! While I was searching for spores/culture, I spotted isolated spores. Much difference between MS and isolated spore?

Isolated spores aren’t spores they’re LC. I’d advise against them as does most on here. If you do get one test it first. I’ve gotten a dirty “isolated spores syringe” before.

Even if they’re not contaminated it’s likely from a very old / weak culture. Starting from spores is the best way imo
