Traffic costs the government money.  Office space costs money.  Utilities cost money.  Dude...working remotely greatly reduces overhead.  This is why commercial real estate across this country has plummeted.  Companies learned that they can save an assload with remote workers during covid.  Less office space means less overhead

Then they learned that it's hard enough to get people to do their jobs even with managers looking over their shoulders. I work with people. Everyone does everything they can to get out of doing their jobs.

If i worked remotely I'd be working 3 jobs at once and have mouse jiggler while I ran some door dash or just relaxed.

I’ve never seen a recession happen in such a short amount of time. Usually there’s like years and years of mistakes and build up to it. But one dumb fucker with absolutely no idea what the word tariff means managed to do it in two months. It’s almost impressive if he’s doing it on purpose.

For the individual and traffic but not government overhead.

The biggest overhead item is maintaining office space for the employees. The government has been selling off buildings and ending leases because of the switch to remote work. DOGE is bringing back employees who no longer have a physical office. There was no forethought put into any of this.

Efficiency is highly overrated. Redundancy built into a system is good and helpful as it protects against system collapse by compensating for unexpected failures/breakdowns.

quite the contrary. The overhyped "bubble" is actually Capitalism itself, and it is being popped. AI is the needle doing the popping.

True, but there ARE services and products of actual value that are part of the capitalistic system… but I guess I would agree that everything is overpriced when compared to actual working wages. Whether food, housing, health care… I guess you’re right, it’s all a bubble.

It’s just that AI is mostly garbage.

Trying to think of something still reasonably priced… state and national parks! I can go camping in the most beautiful pristine nature in the Adirondacks and Catskills, and pay $25 a night for a campsite in a well maintained campground

I’m sure that will get DOGE’d and privatized and exploited, too

AI through the lens of capitalism is garbage, yes, but only because it came to exist at the very end stage. it is like the straw that broke the camel's back (the camel being capitalism), but all these "straws" i.e. products of capitalism, have been accumulating for some time now.

the issue is that people inside the capitalist system expect that since capitalism produced some good things, it will continue to do so naturally. and if it doesnt, rather than being the fault of the system itself, it's somehow the fault of one of its products.

the truth is, products don't stay good forever. they either break/fall apart, or are replaced with something else (not necessary better). this is the true heart of capitalism. it doesn't value things like efficiency and good products. it values quantity, excess, and waste. because these are the things which drive the system to its ultimate completion (tyranny/authoritarianism).

I agree. I would add to that, that at this stage capitalism also values the ability to outright steal from those who are doing something of value.

Regarding AI, I thought this interview was pretty good at highlighting a bunch of the issues with the AI bubble:

Starship blew up again. Just like last time, it is now raining down on Caribbean islands. I don’t see how this doesn’t motivate investors get Elon under control.

I just posted this in the Ukraine thread but I see you guys are talking about AI here so I'll just quote myself:

Quote:
An interesting read on AI fighter jet pilots:

An AI-enabled Air Force F-16 fighter jet, left, flies next to an adversary F-16, as both aircraft race within 1,000 feet of each other, trying to force their opponent into vulnerable positions, on Thursday, May 2, 2024, above Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. The flight is serving as a public statement of confidence in the future role of AI in air combat. The military is planning to use the technology to operate an unmanned fleet of 1,000 aircraft.
https://www.realcleardefense.com/articles/2024/05/13/us_to_use_ai_to_fly_fighter_jets_navigate_without_gps_1031205.html

It's pretty wild to imagine a future where military hardware is AI operated. There's probably a decent amount of maneuvers and capabilities that are limited just to keep a human pilot conscious. What a human-operated drone can do is already really cool. Maybe there wouldn't even be a need for billion dollar jets if you don't need a cockpit. Can fit way more drones on an aircraft carrier. All that time saved training pilots too. Every AI drone would be equal to the Ace.

Imagine perfect formation flying, like they can already do with drone arrays. I imagine that could confuse some air defense, if you have 100 drones stacked or grouped in a way to look like 1 target on a radar... expanding or contracting formation when they detect enemy fire. Maybe having their sensors in array could unlock new abilities, too, like the James Webb telescope. Perhaps to read enemy projectile trajectories, to determine exactly which drone in the array is getting tracked by the AA missile, so it can eject itself from the group.

Note that AI requires advanced microchips. It's not a matter of if, but when war will be waged over chips. All of this mineral, manufacturing, and semiconductor independence is pointing toward a conflict with China over Taiwan.

I miss the good ole days of western unipolarity. I think China deserves the top position personally, but USA feels like the one country that will do anything to keep power. I suppose that's just the nature of power though.

What I don't see happening is USA shoring up all of this production and somehow holding onto its #1 spot genuinely through innovation or whatever. People act like America is so smart, but we're mostly just rich. China has caught up though in wealth, education, industrialization. Statistically, with their higher population it's 5x more likely that innovations will happen in China, everything else being equal.

It's not looking good at the moment with cuts to research, education, and the separation between church and state. I think most of China is atheist. That would be so fucking refreshing to not have half the population disqualified from scientific theory.

They caught the super heavy booster again though, a part that was historically always considered a loss.

AI controls that landing.
