Trichey! Aka Trichoderma, the natural predator of Psilocybe mycelium. Its toast my friend.  Hard to say where it comes from but I will say, your environment looks too wet to me. I can see you're measuring temp there.  Thats a little on the cold side not that that has anything to do with trich.

Trich thrives in high humidity low airflow environments.  I think most new growers tend to think mushrooms need like... 99% humidity so recently, I went to the store and got a hygrometer to prove a hunch that I probably run much lower than 90% humidty and it turns out I'm around 72%. High humidity is indicative of low FAE.  I encourage new guys to push the envelope of what is possible with FAE and low humidty. You'll find that pinning happens much faster and denser and you'll very low occurrences of trich and other contams.

The worst thing that can happen beyond losing your sparkly surface conditions from having too much fae would be bruising a sub. Big whoop. A sub can be 'unbruised' too.

Thanks Beef, that was 100% my problem. I had all my holes plugged up until this week and had it sopping wet in there for a majority of their time in the box. Lesson learned, much appreciated.

Can’t wait to start fresh with the jars I have waiting to be inoculated.

Hey Beef,

First and foremost I want to thank you for this thread. I’ve learned a ton of the basics since I found this thread a few weeks ago; how to prep my own coir, how to build a monotub, etc.  I too was a victim of all in one grow bags.  I bought a bunch (6 to be exact) when I decided to take the plunge into cultivating mushrooms. I was uneducated, had more money than free time and the AIO route seemed to streamline the process.

I’ve had varying levels of success with these bags, 2 B+ bags that are actually performing really nicely and yielding me numerous (albeit small) fruits. I have 2 bags of Golden Teacher that are too early to tell how they’re going to do, and 2 PE bags which I decided to use your rescue tek on after seemingly stalling out.

I took my two cakes out of the bags, dressed them for school, and tucked them into a tub prepped with a bed of field capacity prepped coco bliss.  Everything was going swimmingly until this week, I was achieving 94-97% humidity in my tub, and the mycellium was colonizing the new casing layer brilliantly.  However I had spots that were starting to turn a shade of blue, particularly where water droplets were falling and collecting on the cakes from the lid of the tub.  Chalking it up to bruising I unplugged a couple holes to facilitate air exchange and left for work today.  Unfortunately when I got home I found that the blue spots I had found the night before had grown and turned green.  I’m not very experienced at this but even I can probably surmise that this is contamination.

My questions are:

Can anyone identify this contamination and its possible causes?

What can I do to avoid this in the future when I move on to my first proper monotub grow? My cakes were pretty well colonized when I removed them from the bag so contamination was the least of my worries when prepping my tub.

Thanks again to Beef and everyone else who contributed to this thread!

It's trichoderma, most likely your spawn.

Yeah Trich is the classic “bread mold” you might see on, well, bread, tomatoes, and so on. It’s all over the place.

It could have come from lots of places, but the fact that it was in both PE blocks and the others were successful could mean that whatever you injected the bags with had some contamination to begin with. Gotta be careful with vendor spores, or even LC, as you really won’t know if it’s good until you use them. Hell, even the bags themselves could have problems. I also bought 6, and by the time I got to them, two untouched bags had shit growing in them. Thankfully, they replaced them, but if I’d injected straight away, I would have never known it wasn’t my fault.

There’s also the possibility that some step of your process when following the tek for both blocks was done less than ideally, or even how you kept it after. For example, carpets tend to accumulate a bunch of shit, and placing tubs near or on the floor puts them in much closer contact to surfaces that could house contaminants. Obviously this stuff could be on your hands when you’re rolling the block in coir, etc.
Like Beef said, if it’s too wet, anything you did manage to get in there has a much better environment to grow off of, and I’d recommend trusting his judgement.

For the future, you might want to look into good sterile technique, which many others have covered way better than I could. Getting some disposable latex gloves, some 70% isopropyl, and making or buying a cheap still air box (SAB) is a good start, plus a butane torch for flame sterilizing syringe needles. You don’t need a whole lot to get started, but it’s important, especially for getting your spawn going in the first place.

Good luck with your next grows, and feel free to ask for help!

TRICH!!!

I think there's a substantial debate we could have, though it wouldn't really affect anyone's outcomes much. Beef, you say Trich is the number one predator of cubensis, but I posit that it's much more of a scavenger. MAYBE the vultures that start eating you when you're already half dead. As I mentioned in the above thread, we don't "get" trich. We don't accidentally introduce it. It's basically everywhere all the time. And yeah, it really thrives in still and super-damp environments. Which makes sense, as it's primarily a decomposer that's super active in upper soil layers. But I still think it needs dead and dying material to really get a foothold. I refuse to think of trich as a contaminant. 9 times out of 10, the contaminant was some insidious bacteria that finally KO'ed our substrate after enough time. Trich is just the cleanup crew. Respect the Trich. Love the Trich. Without it, our grows would end in much nastier ways. And the world would be covered in filth and putrefaction.

B, you say that bacteria is likely the true contaminant in cultivation.

While I understand this may not be a peer reviewed paper, this video explains that mushrooms and bacteria naturally unite to form a symbiote that's stronger and healthier than either organism on its own. (Similar to humans and gut bacteria)

In light of this revelation, I posit that the future of cult is to nurture this natural symbiosis, rather than trying to grow fungi in a vacuum, subverting their natural defenses. Symbiotic spawn > axenic spawn.

:nodofunderstanding:

Yeah, I guess that is the true-er statement: spawn with a bacterial balance that's too far out of whack will crash, and then of course nature's janitors step in. There are so many different types of bacteria, too, for all we know "bacterial" substrates are just ones where the ecosystem has some sort of imbalance between the different bacterial strains.

Maybe we need to abandon the word "contamination" altogether!

I have often wondered if fp+ is some kind of symbiote.  In my experience the culture never really looks right. Jars always look suspect.  But then it performs every single time.

That reminds me of a video I saw where someone had some kind of bacteria that was essentially embedded in the mycelium itself. He transferred it from plate to plate like 7 times and still couldn’t get it to grow clean spawn. Always looked normal on agar, but the mycelium got all blobby and compressed in the jar with a bunch of metabolites every time. Said he was just gonna try and get one fruit out of a PF cake to bring it back to spores.

It makes sense that there’s also bacteria that embeds itself in a culture and actually promotes growth. There’s bacteria engineered for all kinds of stuff these days, breaking down oil and plastic, etc. Doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility. Hell, gardeners use trich itself to protect roots and outcompete other organisms. One man’s trash…

Also, love that Anton Petrov guy. Always some wild discoveries in his videos.

Got a dino egg success story to share! This was following the rescue pretty much exactly as laid out by Beef:

1/31/25 All ready for his big day:

2/10/25:

2/18/25:

2/23/25:

2/25/25 - Harvest Day - I ended up with 430g fresh. I probably could have waited a day longer, but I was getting some weird bruising/maybe bacterial spots showing up so I pulled the trigger:

Thanks to Beef for starting this thread, I'd say this rescue went very smooth with minimal effort after the set up!

I’m working a second flush off an egg, but I don’t think I hydrated it enough in between. The coir was also just barely at field capacity according to the tek in the HHG, but honestly felt a little dry. I’ve kept up the surface conditions with spraying and managing FAE, but I’ve also had the heat on recently so it’s been drying quick. Got a couple fruits growing, but one looks like it’s gonna abort. Maybe it’s just tapped out.

First block that never fruited has recolonized well, pins are still generating, and it’s been keeping its moisture pretty well. Hopefully it finally produces something.

2 all-in-one bags each with different strains inside a medium-large-ish storage bin on a rubber pad to keep them off the heating mat placed below the bin. Thermostatically controlled heating mat at 71 degrees for fruiting, six ventilation holes in bin with fabric filter coverings. Has a small aquarium pump routed through a jar of filter media and distilled water with a HEPA filter in the hose running to the bin. Bin is aired twice daily, was running the humidifier twice a day for a few hours, have since stopped using the humidifier to see if the issue was too much humidity. Small incisions for better FAE made in each all-in-one bag just above substrate level. About 4-5 weeks since inoculation with liquid solution. Growing fluorescent lamp positioned above bin on a 12 hour timer that shines through a t-shirt to lessen the intensity. First time grower.

Fully colonized substrate. No pins, no fruiting, and what looks to me like a white crystalline glaze covering the surface of the substrate in each bag.

Has something gone wrong? What can I do? Just wait? I can post pictures if that would help. I have tried searching if the glaze is a contamination, but it does not seem to fit any of the images I've seen.

I'm now being told that it is bacterial contamination probably caused by high humidity. Can it be saved?

Does smell bad, or nice and mushroomy?

The experts will be along soon, but here's my two cents worth: you've come this far, why not follow the tek in the first post here and see what happens? Also, whatever you're doing with an aquarium pump isn't needed. And if you can, heat the room, don't use a heating mat. Otherwise just follow the tek here. And do the crazy dish-sprayer thing because it really works. Good luck.
