Getting stomped on and that turning you obstinate is an understandable psychological reaction. Now that I think about it, I have a pretty big confession to make. I lurked here for a long time before registering, and in those early days I argued and called people gatekeepers and said "it's fine, bro" 10,000 times- all in my head. It seemed like a bunch of people were being purist jerks about agar, so I convinced myself to squirt a bunch of quarts with spore solution and then run g2g's from them. And, of course, spawn them to an overly complex substrate. And it honestly worked out pretty well for while. So that was proof that I was right. Then it stopped working out so well, and I grew up and realized that I needed to learn agar. Then I learned a million things about agar, and stopped doing a bunch of dumb stuff related to my sterile technique, and finally started having reliable enough results that I could sleep at night. Then Covid hit, and I got bored, and finally got over my paranoia, and registered for an account. I could play it off and act like I was never that much of an annoying newb, because nobody saw it. But deep in my heart, I know better.

Psych, just kidding. Actually, my super hot model girlfriend taught me how to do everything. You don't know her, she goes to a different school.

It can indeed get super aggravating answering the same questions and having the same arguments over and over. To be perfectly honest, unless I've got a specific project in mind, I'm pretty much just logging on here the way most people go on Facebook. An approach which is prone to grumpy old man reactions to things.

But here's the thing: we don't HAVE TO correct every single person who says UBtek is awesome. There ARE threads that slip through the cracks and are full of crap advice. People WILL have to fuck up a few times before things start to truly click. We also don't, as individuals, have to take the same approach every time. We CAN trust that the community will pick up our slack. So, the way I personally handle that rage is simple: sometimes I can just ignore stuff being said. Sometimes I'm inspired to write a respectful treatise on "why you're wrong." Sometimes I just feel like posting a meme. Or cracking jokes. As long as I keep it relatively kind, I feel no guilt. Part of this is the idea that our posts transcend the specific conversation we're having at that time. They form the archive that people will be combing through, etiher by skimming the boards or by using that amazing and perfect search engine that so many annoying newbs seem unable to use, or they want to complain that the answers to their questions that came up in the search seemed outdated. Jeez, gimme a break. When I was a kid, I had to code uphill to school both ways.

Anyway, vaguely relevant:

I’ve learned to sit back and only comment on what I know 100% is accurate. I try not to over complicate or scare people out of the hobby with a rabbit hole of information they didn’t ask for. Fortunately I speak in Layman’s terms naturally so I tend to keep myself out of arguments and trouble with the TC’s!

I notice a lot of diatribes completely ignore the OP’s actual question. The analogy I lean towards is “they just want to know how to change the oil, not rebuild the entire engine”

Last year my grow went to complete shit. I was like 10 g2g transfers deep and everything got contaminated. I was blaming it on everything except my spawn and it took stipe and lady’s night to bring me to my senses.

I used to have dreams of texting, one day I woke up and had texted my ex in my sleep, a single word, “Behave”

Yeah I woke up to a lot of curse words in my notifications lol

I confess I just like fucking around and finding out, tonight I mixed 5ml each if two LCs in queue for the trash and sprayed a grain bag, I know they likely won’t cross but I’ll be happy if they even grow at all so hah. Also what if they did cross that would be NEAT.

I know better at this point, for a lot of things, but I will never let knowing better kill my excitement and wonder for what’s possible.

Yes!! When I help someone new, there is quite a bit of need to get some shrooms into this person as quickly as possible in my motivation. Even a little early success with a garbage AIO bag could spark a life changing event that gets them to a better place or gives them a little more of the drive and confidence they need to do better.

How fun was having to relearn your way out of those bad habits? One thing I’ll say about agar is that it reveals all.

My first attempt at growing was 17 years ago when I was living in Hawaii and I found this site and made some LC by shooting a vendor syringe into a LME broth formula I got here and then bought same bags with filters, got some horse poo, sterilized it in a PC. The LC looked good although I had nothing to guage it against but some pictures and I injected it into a few bags and it grew lots of fantastic fruits. I thought, "wow, this is so easy!"

Little did I know, after 10 more failed attempts to make LC that way, how lucky I was on that first grow. But for sure, early success really helps with motivation to learn more because I think if that first attempt had failed and then maybe a couple following attempts had failed, I might have just quit with the realization that this is not an easy thing at all to do and it takes someone with lab training to pull it off.

I did the same thing on my first attempt like 10 years ago. Started with pf tek. Then was like “fuck that’s a lot of work” for a little return. Decided to go to bulk. Used to shoot spores directly to rye. Was really successful the first time. Started doing g2g and thought losing 25% of my jars was good. Built a Martha and everything.

Then in 2017 I decided to try it again and had zero luck. Wasted 10 lbs of rye, multiple syringes and hours of my time!

When I decided to give it another go last year I spent a month reading on here before I pulled the trigger on anything. “Isolated” syringes were a blessing for sure! Now I have a partner that does the stuff I don’t have the time for. Just last week I finally dove into agar. Starting a new learning curve

Early success is absolutely a double edged sword. Real confession time. Now that I know a bit more what I’m doing, and seeing all the garbage that happens with AIO bags, I ordered a bunch to see if (so long as I could get some myc going from an LC syringe) if I could coax  commercial AIO bags into work a little better or at least coming up with better instructions for what to do when you’ve started from the mistake of getting one.

No dice. All four of the AIO bags failed completely and never grew anything. (From a trusted vendor, no less.) So, I can now really only assist new AIO growers from my previous personal “successful” experience where I got maybe 15g from two flushes, and this latest experience has only solidified what absolute garbage they are.

That said, Treefrog is working on home made AIO jars for pans and I’m sitting here completely drooling over the concept.

I'm working on a write up for them.

But I certainly am not the first person to come up with the idea.  Kirkeng also uses them extensively.  And if you look back at the OG pan grows, it's mostly all in one bags inoculated with LC.

I started Pans on millet.  Stalled.  Rye.  Stalled.  Rye and millet.  Sawdust in grains.  Compost tea in grains.  And finally a bit of compost in grains.

While I was playing around with all of that, I also had four small all-in-one bags that had been wedged inoculated going.  They took forever to colonize because of the wedge inoculation.  But still fruited before any of my grain jars finished.

Pretty much since then I've been using all in one jars.  They colonize quickly from wedge inoculation and are just easier to inoculate with a wedge than a bag is.

Experimented some with popcorn and it does work well but is expensive.

So now I'm doing everything in half-gallon jars.  50/50 coir/compost (I prefer black kow).  1:6 or so grains.

The TTBVI is pinning. Once I have fruits from this grow I'll convert the journal thread into a write up.

I confess i dream of a day when we could coordinate a sort of pan-planetary trip day on shroomery where we all agreed to enter a thread at a certain time, all take shrooms at the exact same moment and then have a sort of Woodstock burning pit discussion in the thread. I bet we'd all find we have so much more in common than what separates us!

I get giddy imagining all the good connections that would be formed from such a smooth vibe

Half-caffeinated thoughts follow. You've been warned.

I think there's two big sources of friction that really stick out to me these days:

1 - People don't fucking read. I don't know if they used to "back in the day" but everyone seems to absolutely hate reading in 2025. I have a side business where I make and sell a product that comes with some instructions. Despite the absolutely massive amount of effort I've put into written documentation, nobody cares. Everyone wants a fucking video :mad2:

2 - Our goals as regulars around here are frequently different than the goals of new growers asking for help. Most of them want to just get high, not be wizards.

As a text based site the Shroomery is a little out of the mainstream with regards to how people generally expect things to function these days. I mean how many of these new people might not have even seen a real forum before? Text is king here (and it better not ever change) but we might as well be an alien civilization to some of the people that show up looking for help. One thing that will help people cut though all the new terminology and information is a solid "frequently asked questions" style post we can refer to and help maintain. I'm not keeping track but I feel like there's a metric shit ton of threads from people with <10 posts that are all asking the same things:

  • my grow looks weird
  • what strain should I use
  • I'm a noob and my homemade LC only grows nasties
  • the spores I put directly on grain all contaminated, what did I do wrong?
  • I bought this heating mat/autotub/something else and it sucks
  • whats the best bulk tek since pf-tek is for kiddies and I need YIELDS

When it comes to goals, like I said above a lot of these new growers just want to get high. My theory is that a lot of them resist pf-tek because they see it as a kiddie method that doesn't yield. Fighting UB and other bad teks is basically like every other misinformation battle and frankly I have no fucking idea what to do about that in general. I'm going to keep pushing new growers to pf-tek until they have the basics down

And the people that show up looking to "corner the market" or whatever will always be lost to us. Not that we shouldn't help or guide them but I'll never be surprised when they do what they were just looking for validation to do anyway.

This is one of those rarely perfectly articulated points that once uttered actually makes me reconsider a position I previously had. You are really, really right. I forgot that feeling when I had zero shrooms and I was so desperate for even one tub to work out that all I was really focused on was on getting fucked up. I wanted to trip goddamn it!

I confess I love the search thing, but only because, without exaggerating, I read over 900 pages of threads so I knew what to look for. I spent a whole month reading every linked post in bod's, stipes', c10's, faht's and many more signatures and teks. I just kept opening every link in a new tab to read later and had over 60 shroomery tabs on my phone at some point  I could stay up to 4 am just reading posts in bed. But I understand that for more normal people without hyperfixations... yeah it can suck. Sometimes I still make the mistake of searching in the Search our forums tab because the Search posts is kinda hidden amongst many other small links.

I also confess winter depression is kicking my butt and I've stopped doing shroom work like I should've. I haven't cleaned my shoeboxes for weeks so I've just been spawning half quarts in take out containers inside fahtlocks:
