I did compress lightly and flatten out, perhaps not enough?

I will use a liner next time but hereโ€™s a side shot

No need to use a liner, or to be gentle with compression for that matter. Get a plastering trowel, make the surface look even and then compress it down with the trowel. I press down on mine very firmly, sometimes the shoeboxes' walls even buckle out from the pressure and I have to push them back in.

Lift the box and check it out on all sides, if it's uneven use the trowel edge to take material off the high spots and move it to the low spots and compress again, or just add a little bit more substrate to the low spots and compress it in. You want an even surface so there's no spots where water can pool.

I think you're dealing with some mycogone there friend, sorry to say it's toast.  Wait for another TC to chime in about it as I've never had it and might be wrong.

Do I toss the monotub? Will end up being just a waste of a $10 investment. This worked out ok, I am moving anyway and probably messed up somewhere with the misting and taping the sides. No FAE and stuff. I never made it this far so I'm actually proud even if it's bad. I will just learn for the next time :frown:

Edit: I do want to autopsy this. I initially didn't have the holes taped and I think the substrate dried out. This lead to me basically misting it and then taping the holes (this was ~1 week after). I let it grow for 2 weeks (3 weeks total), with 1.5 weeks holes taped. Next time, just don't worry about taping at all and mist when it looks super dry? Not gonna lie I am disappointed but it is ok. I just will learn

Anything bigger than 5-6 l shoeboxes gets EZ dial holes.

Iโ€™m not familiar with that size shoe boxes. Iโ€™ve got two 30L tubs. Do you think I need holes? Iโ€™m not sure how many gallons that is? Iโ€™m in Australia lol

We're both using liters, so yes, definitely make some holes.

You can also do a comparison with an unmodded tub and one with holes, after all everyone's got different ambient conditions and they might end up doing ok with unmodded.

I drilled mine because I grow in a cupboard and there's not much airflow. The good thing about EZ dials is that they're easy to dial in by taping over holes or leaving them open as needed.

I donโ€™t know if this qualifies as quick, but I have a question about crossing/consolidating traits. I think I read the best way to consolidate a trait is to 1) clone the fruit with the desired trait 2) fruit the clone to check if the trait is still there 3) if yes, take spores from cloned fruits and 4)  grow this โ€œF2โ€ and search for fruits with the desired trait and clone again. Do we do the same when crossing strains? Or just take spores directly from F1 to F2 to F3?

It's most likely you got a contamination from your spawn.  Somewhere in your process it got into your spawn and proliferated undetected.  It got a chance to come out after you spawned.  It didn't just float in a hole in your tub or in the mist.  Spawning is an open air process, sterility goes out the window at that point.

Just focus on SAB fundamentals, nothing over anything else at any time, slow, controlled moves..

Contaminated LC - is it all or nothing after 10+ days of innoculating it? I wanna do a test jar of grain instead of testing on a plate. Dont beat me up - I have my reasons. ๐Ÿคฃ

I mean by the time I put contaminated LC to a grain jar, there will be no doubt that its contaminated bc the contaminate should have been able to really take hold on the LC?
