Re: Ask Quick Questions, Get Quick Answers [Re: Nichrome]

Why tf is there a small green plant growing in one of my tubs? The substrate is fully colonized and has a bunch of hyphal knots. I haven't opened up the tub yet and I didn't want to open it up to take a pic just in case. And I can't get a good pic from the outside due to condensation. But it looks like the picture below.

I used Eco Earth brand coco coir for the substrate. I remember reading that some people found seeds in their Eco Earth coco coir in one of their batches.

Is the tub all bad? I made 2 other tubs with the same batch of eco earth coco coir.
Has anyone else ever experienced this?

It happens.... should be fine. Infact many ppl do it purposefully to maintain optimal micro climate .

if it fails before substantial harvests you'll need to pc the coir. But i doubt that seedling would be the cause of failure at least not entirely.

thats rad. ive never had luck with it unfortunately. 24 hour soak, boil, strain and cool is all that has ever given me great results with rye.

ive also noticed rye to react differently to certain prep methods from season to season or supplier to supplier. i was getting rye for a minute that would starch up into giant balls of rye grain fury no matter how delicate i was with prep. which can be a bummer if u decide to hydrate a 50lb bag in one run.

:cookiemonster:

Yeah, good point. Context factors will play a role. I do about 3-9 months with one 25kg bag, so I can replicate and adjust easily findings .

I also shake after adding the water by the way. I also tried soaking a day in the jar. I have mixed feelings about that; it tend to clumb after the PC cycle, and very difficult to get it unclumped. Shake, hit hand, shake, hit hand, on and on. But afterwards (2 days and lots of shakes later) it is a bit better looking than the no soak. But the no soak, 73% added water, shake, and PC immediateley curently has my preference. And no clumbing at all.</font>

Correction on previous post...

OK, from now on 100% (1:1 dry rye:water)(both on weight) has my preference:

Made some grain jars with some year+ old oats and a storebought LC of M. galindio. One of the 3 jars has these little black spots that I really don't think should be there. Any ideas as to what they?:

Did you test the LC in agar first?

I had jars with these little black dots and got probably 3 good flushes from them. Probably not something you want to see in your jars, but I sent mine and it worked out.

I didn't. At the time didn't have the materials on hand.
I knew even using the very old oats was a risk, as most of the starch was eaten away by weevils.
This was a mad rush to get something going.
Interestingly enough, the other 2 jars show no visible sign of this yet.

Good to know! Thanks.
Will be monitoring....they have an interesting 3D shape that almost resembles a micro/tiny mushroom.
The picture doesn't do that justice of course...I'm sure it will evolve.

I am not familiar with Mucor so I went down the google path to find out what it was.
Eventually ended up on the Northspore contam page and they had this. (I'm not sure about the linking rules so I didn't link the page) :

At least in its current state...it sure looks like it could be a Pin Mold.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Anybody still use 2 piece metal lids with the disc flipped? Sfd over hole obviously. Whats the concensus on that setup?

I do pucks in 4oz jars that way, works, but would sketch me out to use that lid setup with grain. But unmodified one-piece plastic lids are lovely.

My first time making a LC from a Clean Agar Plate and transfer it with a Syringe Nedle and shoot it too the injection port after 4 Day's the Nats growing very well inside..

What you think?

I think you're way out of your league with LC and should be focusing your efforts on making good grain spawn using agar.  Once you get consistent results with the basics, then move on to LC.

PE doesn't need a casing.  Psudo case with coir at spawn and fruit as you would a regular cube.

....And once you've got good grain spawn..... G2G, baby!

I think anybody who has less than a Kilo (dry) under their belt, shouldn't be worrying about it.
It's not a necessity and if anything it's a distraction, potentially evolving into animosity for cultivation as a whole due to compounded failures.
