WLs probably not an significant issue.

Cubes possibly

Curious. Do you think that is a substrate thing? Or do the earthworms just not seem to bother the WLs?

Worms eat leaves and other decaying matter, I don't think they're gong to go after the myc.

A short piece of 1/2 and/or 3/4 inch copper pipe melts nice clean holes in tubs, screw drivers work for smaller holes. Much cheaper than buying a drill.
Work outside or under the oven vent.

I'm just letting this grow out:

No foul odor, no nothing. I did see a post that said that somebody told me my grain was not fine. I had one contaminated jar that I didn't use in the process. I purchased a spore syringe from a sponsor and used that to inoculate the WBS. With the jars that are used, including contaminated jars, do I wash them in the dishwasher or do I just reprep without doing anything different? Do I toss them out? If this monotub is contaminated, do I also toss it out and just start fresh?

Re: SAB: I don't know what I did wrong here either. I wiped with alcohol, I sprayed with water. My AC/heat was off. The movements were delibrate.

Re: Coconut Coir: I boiled water, poured into a bucket with a brick. Not all of the brick was wet so I did use my bare hand to mix the brick in (it was hot as hell and burned me lol) and let it sit for a few days until the grain was ready.

Re: Bulk: I mixed wearing gloves after dumping the jars in. I didn't use a lamp or tape initially on the SAB and it was also in my bathroom.

I'm just trying to figure out wtf I did wrong. This is like my fifth time trying this and I'm still not successful. I'm just frustrated. Thanks guys.

It's just blobbing, second flush will be okay.

PE?

Yep. PE

When you say blobbing, what does that mean? Do I cut these or what? Will they grow into mushrooms?

Define long term?
You can get quite a bit of longevity from a thicker poured plates, wrapped and stuck in cold storage.

I've revived oysters and some other cubes after a year or so in the fridge

Other methods I've seen around here in the past couple years are distilled H20 storage

Faht has a great way of drying colonized dried grain which works wonderfully

Blobs are just mutated fruit bodies. They are also active, so harvest them and dry as usual. 2nd flush should straighten out, if not you can eat some blobs and mind control your sub into compliance!

it sounds like ppl are saying this is fine but either way - MSS to grain is risky and you're more likely to get contams that way. If you can go from syringe -> agar first that's ideal.

Also dishwashing is up to you, i like to just to have a clean jar but i know some people don't mind. as long as you're doing adequate PC cycles that'll kill whatevers leftover from prior grows.

Lastly since this is PE have you tried growing other varieties? Maybe shoeboxes w another variety would give you better results. Good luck!

You put spores to grain.  Spores are inherently dirty as fruiting is not sterile.  Skipping agar will get you a MUCH higher contamination load.  Vendor LC is just as bad, it needs to be tested on agar before being sent to grain.

I think this happened from the start.

Personally I wouldn't let that ride, I'd yeet the sub into the sun and wash the tub out with soap and hot water.  You have a pretty clear cut case of mycogone going down.  Same with your jars, wash them out with soap and hot water like you would any other dish (or better chuck them in a dishwasher if you have one) and then fill and PC as usual.  Your PC cycle should take care of any contaminants, but it's just good practice to keep clean equipment and work space.  That way when bad things happen you have a shorter list of variables to deal with.

Hope you get better luck with your next run!

(but rely on agar and not luck!)

You should consider doing a journal.  Then you can kinda keep track of everything better and identify ways to improve, or adjust.  I like it for the pictures too, just keeps things organized in my head and allows people to follow progress better too.

Do you guys dishwash the lids too or only the jar? The lid has polyfill. btw I needed help with the polyfill I literally struggled with winding it nice and tight. One of my friends did it

No, your grow is contaminated with mycogone.  You need to throw it out and start over.

Sorry I'm not trying to be difficult I"m trying to better understand this. I found this on the Hitchhiker guide (which I only recently discovered):

Quote:
Why am I getting blobs? Penis Envy tends to "blob".  Rather than growing nice little dongs like the pictures showed when you purchased your culture, you're getting ugly little warts that will grow into big ugly toads. This is part of the nature of Penis Envy varieties and we all struggle with blobs from time to time. Yes, you can still eat them. If they are very thick, (like any very thick mushroom) you should slice them up before you dry them. Yes, they're still every bit as potent as the dongs. Typically, you'll get a wave of blobs on your first flush and then subsequent flushes will produce some dongs. Its always tempting for noobs to want to grow penis envy as their first attempt, and I personally don't think this is a great idea for this reason. I recommend using Stipe-n Cap's "pseudo-casing" technique to help mitigate this issue. I also use this technique for nearly every variety I grow and you'll see that it is included in my "Beefy Tub" tek previous discussed in the HHG pt. 1.

Are these Mycogone because they are blobs or are they Mycogone because they are reddish colored? Is the reddish color Mycogone or is it "mushroom urine" or whatever? That's where I'm having a hard time.

I'm going with mycogone based on how covered in amber spots they are, and how dark they are.  That is not normal spotting for blobs.  I have grown penis envy a number of times and my blobs did not look like that.

Yeet.  Sun.

I don't have a good pic to post but the last tub of PE that blobbed out on me looked fairly similar to this one with all the dark spots. Def looked weird but were otherwise fine once harvested. My eyes at least aren't seeing the amber but maybe I need more coffee.

Personally I'd still probably toss because fuck harvesting small blobs.

I've had tubs of azurescens spawn that were devastated by red wigglers. They moved from the composting bin to the tubs and actually ate the myc. Don't think regular earthworms do that though.

Are you sure that happened, or did your tubs die and there were also worms?

I have had worms in all of my beds and they have never touched the myc.
