I tried wbs a few months ago and must've did something wrong because they barely had any growth. I pretty much had given up but one jar showed some life. Looking at the pics, do you think it's worth a go? Or no?

I think it’s worth 5 minutes of time and 50 cents of coir in a shoebox.  You got nothing to lose…

Yeah, it’s always worth it until you have so many projects going on at once that you start binning iffy spawn. I’m just getting there myself, on my way to binning fruits in no time

In Water Tub, do i need to mist in 1-5 day my cakes as it says in the guide or can i mist them more often in one day like in PF tek? I'm using vermiculite.

I do PF tek in water tubs  and rarely mist. Depends on your environment and equipment.
If you don’t look at them several times a day you won’t mess with them several times a day.
I look at mine while the coffee brews and look again the next day.

You mist them when it's necessary, not according to some schedule. The cakes should have small drops of water on all sides all the time.

Sometimes with cakes the mycelium doesn't colonize the whole surface but only pokes through a little bit. If that's the case, coir turns lighter in color as it loses moisture. Verm is more difficult to see so hopefully your cakes will be fully colonized and it will be easy to check the moisture levels. If you don't get full colonization you can still use the strands of mycelium that do come out as an indicator.

Also don't be tempted to open the tub and check on them too much, that can cause too much evaporation and drying out.

I've had some time to think about what might be going wrong with my process thanks to the knowledgeable people here. I've been doing fooman prep for my WBS, except I've been letting it air dry before loading it up and PCing instead of just draining for 30 min and loading it up wet. How critical is it to load up wet? Can this be where I'm going wrong? Perhaps I had just been getting lucky with the bag of grains I had and when I got a new bag, with a different batch of grains, my luck had ran out.

I had been told in the past it's very hard for grain to be TOO dry, but maybe that's not the case.

It's hard for it to be too dry on the outside, but not on the inside.  If you're doing a TEK someone has written, you need to do it exactly as they have written it.  If not, you are completely off the map and will not have the same results as them.  Wait until you've had lots of experience cultivating before altering methods so you have the eye to see what's happening.

I haven't read foo's WBS tek, but noobie shroomie's WBS tek never did me dirty:

I will say after some recent reading I'm dubious about soaking grain.  That link stipe threw up gave me info to chew on that's pretty solid.  In the future I may be trying to move to a boil/hot soak only method to avoid fermentation and development of peptides.

When making prints, are you holding the caps still with your hands to cut them off?

If so, are you placing them on the foil with your hands?

When I remove them from the foil I use my scalpel blade to pick them up.

I just wash my hands with warm water and soap then touch those puppies.  I don't do syringes, I just put spores on plates.  I expect to be cleaning up a dirty print as all prints are dirty

I use a straightened out paper clip to pierce the cap and scissors to cut the stem. Transfer to the foil and use the scissors to slide the cap off the paper clip.

What's yalls favorite grain jar colonizing temp. I had an aggressive straing going good at 67-70 but the pan cyan and GT I had were moving super slow so I moved it to a room with a 72-76 temp

They're expensive to run, and we are very broke.  I haven't had any problems with jars colonizing with my house temps in the low 60s.

No seriously, even if I had a lot of scratch I'd be running ambient room temp in the mid-low 60s during the winter.  My jars are not getting special treatment and their own heated room.  If a culture is too weak to survive my negligence, it dies or gets yeeted
