Thanks man! They also look way better than any of my other attempts to me. I just had doubts because I'm using hulled millet instead of whole millet but I hope it will come out alright. Will shake when it's fully colonized to check how well it recovers!

Wait really? I just followed Stipe's grain prep and was never sure if it was the right move since that one is for whole millet. Could you point me to the tek you use for hulled millet?

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27203549#27203549

ive tried millet prep all different ways but this method gives me the best results in jars and bags. sufficient hydration with the least burst/sticky grains.

basically just soak for 24 hours, strain, load into bags or jars immediately. i fell in love with rye many years ago but after learning this millet prep, ill never go back.

edit: just noticed u said hulled. dunno if this works for hulled lol. amazing for un-hulled

Is millet just a personal preference or are you guys cutting down on sub colonization time with the smaller grains?

not having to boil the grain is why i use it.  saves time and energy.

I just tried it because hulled millet was easily available and my 50lb bag of whole oats took almost a month to arrive

hey worth a try. and if u havnt looked already, search for feed supply stores. they always have a wide variety of inexpensive grain, including millet. luckily i live in a farm town so its readily available.

I have a question, what does it take to become a trusted cultivator here? I personally don't think I'll ever get that title or really want it even but the TCs here have so much great knowledge I'm just wondering if it's a certain amount of grows under the belt or years, or being successful in different teks. I'm curious.

Being helpful, knowing when you have the answer and knowing when to just shut up helps lol, getting noticed and that doesn't even have to include your grows just having a presence .
Sometimes being quiet is just as good or actually better than guesstimating advice.

Not having to boil is not limited to not-grain. I don't boil my rye as well anymore. I just put dry rye in jar, add water (73% in grams), close lid and PC for normal length (90 mins + 10 mins to be safe). This was my inspiration: YoshiTrainer's guide to low-prep grains (https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/28052502/fpart/all).

PS: still experimenting with the 73% and the first 100% populated jar is not there yet, but coming soon. So don't take the 73% as a given rule.

thats rad. ive never had luck with it unfortunately. 24 hour soak, boil, strain and cool is all that has ever given me great results with rye.

ive also noticed rye to react differently to certain prep methods from season to season or supplier to supplier. i was getting rye for a minute that would starch up into giant balls of rye grain fury no matter how delicate i was with prep. which can be a bummer if u decide to hydrate a 50lb bag in one run.

Yeah, good point. Context factors will play a role. I do about 3-9 months with one 25kg bag, so I can replicate and adjust easily findings .

I also shake after adding the water by the way. I also tried soaking a day in the jar. I have mixed feelings about that; it tend to clumb after the PC cycle, and very difficult to get it unclumped. Shake, hit hand, shake, hit hand, on and on. But afterwards (2 days and lots of shakes later) it is a bit better looking than the no soak. But the no soak, 73% added water, shake, and PC immediateley curently has my preference. And no clumbing at all.

Some verm in the bottom of jar and sprinkled throughout will help with some of the no prep clumps. It just makes little harder to see clearly through the glass.

Also a slow increase in temp not straight balls to the walls, helps if having a bunch of bursting grains all of the sudden.
