We as a species are a mere 200k to 300k years old. Species typically last around 250,000 years before going extinct. We shit in the water, burn the air, and boil the sea. We are singlehandedly the 6th great extinction to occur on this planet.
What has sentience brought us but the destruction of our only home? What has it brought us besides the threat of nuclear annihilation of all life on the planet? We may not even have to wait for that to happen, it will simply be too hot soon.
So, jury might still be out on that one.
And this is why I give Piggy such a hard time...
1. H. sapiens sapiens (modern humans), the hybridized version of H. sapiens, H. neanderthalensis, and H. denisova, have only existed on this planet for around 100k years. Not 200k-300k... True H. sapiens, the ones that existed 200k-300k years ago, don't exist anymore.
2. H. neanderthalensis existed for at least 360k years, Australopithecus afarensis lasted around 700k years, and H. erectus was around for over 1.5 million years. If you want to go non-humanoid, Triops cancriformis has existed for 220 million years, and horseshoe crabs have existed on this planet relatively unchanged for 450 million years. There is no actual data supporting his wild claim that "species typically last around 250,000 years before going extinct.", that's just nonsense...
3. Animals have been shitting in the water for hundreds of millions of years before the first animal climbed on land. There is literally more tonnage of fish shit in the ocean currently right this second than there is tonnage of human beings on the planet.
4. Boiling the seas? Really? Show some evidence the seas have gotten anywhere close to 200F that isn't caused by natural thermal vents or an erupting underwater volcano, I'll wait...
5. We are NOT in the "6th Mass Extinction Event", that's utter bullshit. Extinction events are measured by the estimated amount of extinct species in a short GEOLOGICAL period of time, not the past 60 years. Currently there are an estimated 100-10k (that's not a typo) species going extinct every year. That's a MASSIVE difference, proving they don't actually know anything at all about how many species are actually going extinct. They're just guessing...
But what we do know for sure is that around 15k-20k "new" species are discovered every year. And it's estimated that 86% of all land species (and 91% of underwater species) have still yet to be scientifically documented. And we know by the fossil record that every time the planet warms up, species evolution booms and new species emerge. Do some actual oppositional research, instead of just regurgitating the bullshit you were spoon-fed by people who make billions of dollars each year off your fearful ignorance.
The 5th Mass Extinction Event saw the extinction of half the world's species of megafauna (animals over 100lbs) on the planet, and around 3/4 of all life on North America die, within a 1000-2000 year period. All of the existing megafauna on the planet now is just the half that survived. Only uneducated people (or people with an agenda) would compare our current time period to the Younger Dryas extinction, which was one of the smallest Mass Extinction Events... To even be close to that one we'd have to see the total extinction of all remaining currently-known existing animal species over 100lbs (including us), and the death of 3/4 of all life on this continent, in just the short period of time between the fall of the Roman Empire and today.
6. Dude, go get some therapy! Or get a new therapist, because whatever you're doing isn't working... Your nihilistic view of the world proves to me that "medicinal" psychedelics are not working for you at all. You are far more disconnected from the world around you than the average sober person. How can you claim you ever show love and respect to your fellow humans when out of the same mouth (or finger tips) you shit on the entire existence of our species and everything we've accomplished?
7. What has our sentience done? It's lowered the annual infant mortality rate from 20%-30% a mere two hundred years ago to an average of 0.01% today in developed nations. It's lowered the amount of human deaths by natural disaster per decade by 92% since the 1920's. It's found a way to successfully gene-edit child patients with sickle-cell anemia to effectively eliminate the condition. It's made it possible to grow food crops in deserts around the world, feeding millions of people that would have just slowly starved to death while they watched their loved ones suffer too. It's lifted well over a billion people out of extreme poverty around the world in just the past 34 years.
It's made it possible for you to live in a safe, spoiled environment that your great-great-grandparents would never have believed was possible in a 1000 years. It's made it easy as hell for you to get online to communicate with any number of people around the world that you want to learn about the great and wonderous cultures that reside outside your tiny existence, and instead you decide to come on here and whine about how horrible your fellow humans are for giving you all the comforts you willfully take for granted every day.
And it made it possible for me to survive being born a premature heroin-baby with a bad case of jaundice, two inguinal hernias, and a moderately-severe cleft palate that made it impossible for me to breast feed. It made it possible for me to get that cleft palate fixed in 1977, so I could eat and drink like a normal child. And it made it possible for me to get those two inguinal hernias fixed again in 2016, keeping me for putting a gun in my mouth due to the pain.
Maybe you wouldn't be so depressed and nihilistic if you tried having some actual gratitude for the billions of people that died to make it possible for you to exist.
Btw, you do understand that people live fine in daily temps of above 90F, right? More people live closer to the equator than further away from it. Millions of years of geologic evidence shows that it is cold periods that kill off life globally, not warm periods.
