Could you show a wider POV so we can see the microclimate? They seem to love that spot! Nice and wet.

Certainly

Some pics from the 1st flush:

Looking South-East

Looking East

The rhododendron is the only bush on the patch. The whole thing is surrounded by plants though that overhang into the patch and provide some shade and wind protection and there's some plucks of dune grass planted in the patch here and there.

There's probably more (older) pics in the link Woodlovers Adventures in my sig where you might get a better idea of the layout.

WOAH!! AMAZING Spot!
So the keys are:
- Rhododendron (they seem to love this plant for some reason)
- Shady area from taller trees and bushes
- Dune grasses (For Azures specifically)
- Keep it wet if it doesn't rain for long (right?)
- Cover the wood chips bed with mulch instead of soil (that's what I see in your picture but please correct me if I'm wrong!)

-Rhododendron: inconclusive but could be. It was already there when we got this place. The whole patch was gravel before.

-Shady area: good idea (also, this is a pretty shady area of town  )

-Dune grasses: not needed but can't hurt

-Keep it wet: only to initiate fruiting (if needed) and if it gets too dry during fruiting

-Cover: I used potting soil to cover my chip bed, not mulch

MY FIRST CULTIVATED WOODLOVERS!

Azurescens grain spawn to fairly old (6months?) woodchips straight from the pile and into a flower pot. About 1ft of chips in total. Spawned early June of this year, current temps are pretty consistently in the 40s(f) with a lot of rain. I was ready to give up on them, but I'm so stoked now!

Honest opinion, the rhody and dune grass have nothing to do with its success.  Tweeq spawns the hell out of his patches with woodchip spawn, which has probably the highest success rate.  High spawn ratio in ideal food in an ideal climate = big patch.

Stamets started the baseless rhody association, along with many other baseless assertions.  I would be willing to bet people find a lot of wood lovers under rhodies is because they have a taller and more sparse growing habit than most landscaped plants and it’s easier to spot fruits under them.

Ive recently boiled some Alder wood pellets and they have turned into VERY fine powder.. can I mix this with beech chips of various sizes to create a great bed? I'm wondering what the best size ratios are and if mixing with super fine sawdust is good or not.

I personally wouldn’t.  Woodlovers like wood chips that are chunks about the size of your thumb.

I didn't know it was attributed to Stamets, seemed like a pre-cultivator adage, but it wasn't a vital in an already loaded memory. You know he tended to present as if all the stuff he got off others was also his.....without actually saying so.

A very popular person here (still) that is retired was friends with him during "the rise" and by book 2, I dont think he had many, if any, original friends left.

I was gone when it turned on Paul, but it sure went to the bone  - not that I mind, its just such another universe from "upward and paulward".

So what about those big pieces of mulch on top? Did you put that there along with the potting soil? Or were they part of the spawn? Because they don't seem too white with mycelium, so I assume it was just to keep the moisture of the actual bed in!

THOSE are wood chips? They are HUGE! I thought they are some kind of garden mulch! They are also reddish in color instead of that white-yellow beech color.

Sawdust tends to sog up / dry out too quick. Plus it's essentially an industry byproduct... Wouldn't use it. You never know what else has been through that sawmill.

Compressed Alder pellets should have the same reddish color as the woodchips in Tweeq's bed (you wondered about the color). When you cut the wood, it initially has a Linden / beech kinda color, quickly turning reddish in an oxidase type reaction.

Question (perhaps for you, Mr P): I was told P. ovoideocystidiata thrives among Alder, but I don't have the right type over here. My first spawn is ready, would it benefit from being laid out under A. glutinosa or another Alnus species? Was a link ever proven? It obviously isn't a mycorrhiza forming species.
