Thought I was the only one to ramble on about woodchips outside of this forum.  Nice score!

Anytime I see yellow slime mold anywhere on my property I bag it up like it was dogshit and toss ASAP.  Same with armillaria.

Flipped an empty monotub over the center of bed and got another 6 pins.

This one is about 5' away and looks different. Just been dumping colonized chips errywhere the last 3 years and I don't even remember half the stuff I do, any chance this an azzie, different cyan phenotype or just random lawn shroom that looks similar?

And yes, only we mycologists understand the joy of woodchips.. because to us, it is a stepping stone to something greater. The potential substrate it can become! And to what.. ohohoho, to what!

Stamets is a money whisperer.  In the future I would advise against the use of cardboard as it’s an inferior medium that can starve myc.  If you need chips you can get bags of scotts naturescape brown at home depot, or smoker chips.  I also suggest looking at garden centers outside of the box-store realm to find chips.  The alder was a very good move, but woodlovers tend to like them aged a few weeks and not fresh.

Stamets is outdated and a businessman, not a mycologist.  His primary preoccupation is money, which he has no morals about getting.  When his workers tried to unionize because their pay and working conditions were horrible he hired the same union busting firm as starbucks.  Fuck stamets.

(Yet another major attraction I used to get cussed all over for, that has aged even better than I thought.)

I found this on one of your posts. I can see some slime mold on that Azurescens stem!

Yes but this is an example where the myc did survive. Actually it lived for over 5 years before dying out.

This cyan bed (clone) is popping it's fifth (!) flush this season.

In other news: my first throw at ovoideocystidiata. Beech chips with 5% bran, 90 mins at 15 psi, inoculated a week ago (lc), gave them a shake after two days. Pretty fast grower for a woodlover.

Even though the caps are basically black from frost they are still growing. And I have more popping up. Not as much as some of you but any that do grow are more then I have now. Squirrels, frogs and snakes have really tore my bed up this year.

As soon as they stop fruiting, chip the fuck out of that bed.

Frost burn in hell!

Definitely get you some Frost hats or a sheet of plastic or something to throw over them, if you get a warning that it's going to frost. Its just because it could touch them and 1" of distance helps.
Even straw will work and you can just pull it off the next day.

Speaking of

Does everybody/anybody new chip the top half or 2/3rds and leave the bottom?

I've always been superstitious about going much more than half down or adding more than is already there in volume....but I made both of those up guessing - I thought it might delay fruiting if it all didn't run in time or kill the creature disturbing it too much.

Y'all...

MY FIRST CULTIVATED WOODLOVERS!

Azurescens grain spawn to fairly old (6months?) woodchips straight from the pile and into a flower pot. About 1ft of chips in total. Spawned early June of this year, current temps are pretty consistently in the 40s(f) with a lot of rain. I was ready to give up on them, but I'm so stoked now!

I add new chips right after fruiting stops which is summer for ovoids.  I do it fairly slowly.  Too much all at once can invite in other fungus.  I put a nice covering no more than a couple inches.  Let it colonize and add more if it reaches the top.  My patches probably did the most colonizing of new chips from sept-oct when its wet and cool, it really tore ass through wood chips I added recently with thick ropey bright white mycelium. Once around the first frost hits I stop adding more and let it get ready for next spring.

Let grasses, weeds and stuff grow in your patch.  It almost seems ovoid is symbiotic with some grasses, both are really healthy and it likes to fruit under the grass.  The caps try to reach just over the top of the grass, so when you fruit on bare chips they are more likely to be stumpy.

throwback to april of a nice cluster growing around whatever weed this is.
