Well, this is what the source plate (A) looked like on July 3:

Transferred (clumsily) on July 5:

And then 4 days later, on July 9, it looked like this:

Little late on growth to be a mono and if it is, it wont be one for long. So I wouldn't mess with that.

So back to square one, possibly mold. If a and c are the same culture, toss plate a and chase c.

It's funny that I chose to transfer the right hemisphere because it was thicker, because now it looks like the left one was better.

Now I've got a clean culture of mold.

Haha that's why you always take more than one, like you did. Super helpful when you keep your germ plates around though. That's good practice.

Next time post the germ plate with it, makes it easier to determine what it is 🤣

I've been trying to take pictures as much as possible. I have no decent way of organizing them, but they're good to have when I need them. I'll make sure to post the whole set of relevant photos up front next time

The labelling convention I'm using is the date (YYMMDD), then a letter to identify which plate or culture it is from that day, and then I write the source of the culture below that, prefixed with a ^.

You plate labeling method is way organized! I've tried stuff like that before but then would end up forgetting what it means later on 🤣

Sorry for the confusion, by "radial" I meant growing perfectly outward from from the center, as Supa said. I've also seen it described as "linear" growth. This is as opposed to the disorganized growth, with strands appearing to grow every which way, that we see often in a mold colony (even species that tend to be perfectly circular like penicillium).

The nicest looking growth on that germination plate (to my eyes from the July 9 pic) is the "E" colony...but I'm not sure I would have said that on July 5. I can see some of that disorganized fuzziness on the right hemisphere of "A" on the pic from the 3rd though.

I'm not entirely convinced that it is mold, but given you have a much more "well-behaved" culture, it may not be worth keeping around unless you're really curious how it will grow and don't mind taking the chance.

Yeah. It's minimal effort to keep it around and transfer it again. I've just been trying to get a clean culture on agar for quite some time, and I still don't really know what I'm looking for. I thought contamination would be more obvious, but it seems like most of the time, it just stays white and doesn't sporulate, so I never find out whether a culture is good or not. Unless I send it to grain, I guess.

Ps. hoogshagenii putting out some weird blob growth. The growths are forming 100% within the agar. Not above or below but literally inside. I carved out some chunks to clone. Rubbery texture. Maybe something good will come of it.

I'm interested. Following

Hey friends, Ive been having troubles figuring out the difference between white mold and tomentose growth…so I’ve been making transfers anyway.

Am I correct in thinking that white mold won’t produce rhizomorphic growth and the images below are healthy mycelium?

Thanks for the help! ✌🏼

Yep, healthy mycelium. Looks pretty

Feels good to finally have a win! Thanks for the help Azurecultivator.

Would you let this grow out a little or make a couple of transfers now?

It’s p.natalensis and this is first transfer from germ plate.

+1 on AOTC’s post

Here’s my way: Let it grow until it’s about a cm from the edge. I use 90mm plates. Transfer the good spots one more time (T2). Then use 1/2 plate of each T2 per 1.5 lb bag

There are many other ways, so you may need to pick a path

Some Yellow Umbo about ready to eat some grain:

Something I'm really excited for: what I hope to be the beginning stages of TTBVI. Shout-out to SupaThaRipper! :mushroom2: Many thanks for the spores awhile back, finally getting them going haha. Put to agar on 7•19•24, showed signs of germination by 7•22•24, pictures taken 7•23•24:
