I got an oyster mushroom kit and after it fruited I cloned one successfully with zero contams so far. I figured it would be good practice but idk what to do with it when it grows up lol

Are you equipped to make grain spawn? You can send it to grain, then make Lipa tek bags (wood pellets and boiling water). Inoculate a 5 lb bag with a quart of spawn, let it colonize, and fruit like you did the kit after it colonizes.

Ya I think I can make bags in the instant pot but idk where to source the bags from. That seems pretty easy to get into wood lovers

You can make grain spawn in jars (far, far easier to deal with, especially if you're inoculating them in a SAB). The fruiting bags don't need to be cooked (Lipa tek just needs boiled water).

myersmushrooms.com has smaller quantities of Unicorn bags with free shipping if you're in the US. Otherwise you can order a ton directly from Unicorn. The 14A size is right for about 5 pounds of substrate.

Or just use any bag since you're not sterilizing the substrate. You just need to be able to give it some gas exchange (e.g. a bunch of pinholes or a wad of Polyfil zip-tied inside the opening of the bag).

Hey guys, my b+ ( from a clone ) and bluey Vuitton  ( from lc ) look fairly weak and was wondering how I should proceed to get the best mycelium before I go to grain.

They are all T1 ( apart from the b+ with the most growth as that is the T0 ) on 2% lme agar

I usually lower lme to 1% or a bit less to get more rhizo. I like the top left plate and second pic, can't see too well what's going on in top right. The middle one might just be tomentose, but I'm not sure. Can't see too well what's going on in third left and I'd stay clear of third right

Thanks, some of it is hard to pick up because it's so weak, those two you picked out by far the ones that look the best in person also.

I made 1.5% lme agar yesterday, as I didn't want to just too low straight way, will make the next batch at 1% and see.

Reckon give it a couple of more days and transfer the strongest looking parts ?

I need help.

i'm always striving for perfection. And it works perfectly with my grows and my cultivation so far.

What i didn't manage to get perfect is agar.

I always get those brown specks (sadly don't have a pic) in my agar. They don't do anything, no contamination and the plates work just fine.

But i want clear, perfect, glass-like plates.

My mix is standard 7.5g LME, 10g Agar, 500ml water.

I tried to boil the agar (before sterilization) for 3-4 minutes. I've tried straining.
But always, after Sterilization in the PC for 20 minutes at 15 PSI, i have brown specks on the side of the bottle. And when i pour it into the petri dishes, they come along.

I think it's caramelization of the LME. I've already tried 2 different LMEs, one coming from a reputable Mushroom Vendor (Gourmet and Actives).

Are there any other tipps you can give me to have my plates perfect without those anoying brown specks?

Edit: with pic now

:whathesaid:

Maltose typically takes 350f to caramelize which I doubt you're hitting in a PC.  Caramelization would also produce slightly darker overall mix in the agar, not just sediment scattered in normal colored agar.

Also, I get the clearest plates by adding the lme to room temperature distilled water. Take the time to stir it until the powder is completely dissolved before adding the agar and heat.

I go as low as 0.5% lme and still get normal growth on plates.

These are a couple of nat plates doing nat things.

The biggest problem with getting crystal clear plates is protein. When you vigorously boil malt extract there are proteins that denature and flocculate. Brewers call this the hot break. A quick boil to dissolve your malt won’t get rid of all of it. You also never know how much protein is in your malt extract because it’s not usually listed on the package. Sometimes I get clear agar when I mix the cold ingredients and send them through the PC, sometimes it has solids in it. The only way to ensure clear agar would be to really boil your water/malt extract, allow the proteins to fall out and pour off or filter, then add in your agar powder. Too much work for me, but if you want those sweet clear agar pics you got to put in the work.

I use light pilsen malt (barley) which is lovibond 1 and I never see gunk mixing cold and PC'ing. Sweet Cloud rice syrup is also a cheater move for crystal clear agar and lc both, every time and is interchangeable with malt.

I add some brewer yeast to some stuff though which has wheat particles and some protien so there are some specks at that point.
