It’ll do that sometimes before growing out, it’s fine and looks clean so far, just give it some time. And the drops don’t mean it’s bacterial. Just condensation. Any unknown spots in the agar, just watch them and pay attention if they’re growing. If your cups are poured thin enough or clear enough, you can trace the edge of any marks with a fine point marker to see if it’s growing in the next couple days

Mycelium will grow up, over, and around. Bacteria should only grow horizontally from what I've read from others.

Droplets could be fine? Looks like condensation from the lid?

I am by no means an expert but have seen similar in the few months I've been doing agar.

I'd let em grow out and see what happens...

The culture will puff up more than most pictures youll see because its from pf tek rather than just a tiny agar wedge. It looks ok so far but its too soon to tell how well it will grow out. In general, what you need to watch out for is if its all spikey and sticking up.

Yeti clone

P. Natalensis clone from a pin in T0 spore plate.

My Husky tidal-wave like mutant that I tried the other day and it blew my mind with 1g. Finally the grain jars of these are ready to go!

and my three corner swab of Yeti in open air. Should've transferred earlier. Where would it sample from in these? I think each corner developed its own and at the same speed so maybe they all deserve a chance.

My very fist clone! I don't know how you all get a white clone. Mine turned very blue immediately. Still seems to be growing out nicely. Yeah, a lot of condensation, I know...

Transfer out from that as soon as you can from the good areas! Maybe another day and then at least 3 transfers

I’m growing out some agar plates getting ready to transfer them to grain and now there is this hue of blue around some parts. Please excuse the condensation and messy agar transfer (I’m new) but does the blue hue mean mold and if so, does that mean the contaminant was there to begin with and just needed time to flourish?

Thanks for the advice! I thought it was getting big enough to transfer.

Hey guys have you ever had cultures that ate through the agar?
I have a melmack culture that eats it like crazy and now I got a few pf jars about colonized. I plan on using one or two as master jars and knock up a few jars of rye to really get things jumping…
I’m excited because my last grow was Costa Ricans and they dried up to almost nothing…

Y’all have any cultures that ate to the bottom of the agar before it hits the side of the Petri dish?
(I know I’m quoting myself because nobody responded….)thanks for any help guys! I love ya all!

Mycelium runs through agar for sure. More noticeable with some cultures and species than others - some of my oyster cultures in particular make the agar kind of brittle (difficult to pick up large wedges without them breaking apart) once they've aged a bit.

Thanks man! Yeah I haven’t seen that before, melmack is jumping, I got my jars colonized and am getting ready to make a couple tubs… stoked for big fruits!

This is my first time trying to properly use agar and trying to get into this hobby properly, after five years of lurking this site and attempting various teks to mixed success.

This is some GT I'm running that I think is looking pretty good so far but I welcome comments, here's my favorite plate. It originally came from a LC syringe from a trusted vendor. This is the first transfer.

I'm a little worried about this Avery's Albino though, can anyone more experienced tell if it's contamination? It originated from a swab I ordered online (not from a trusted vendor). This is also the first transfer. The original inoculation plate hasn't turned any funky colors but it's all this very cottony looking growth just like this. For now I'm just planning on monitoring.

Nice first post! Agar is a really useful tool for this hobby.

And great job getting the mycelium in focus.

The first plate looks great. The second does look pretty disorganized for cubensis, to my (still noobish) eyes. Did you swab multiple plates, or are there nicer looking colonies to transfer from on the donor plate?

What are the flecks around 7 o'clock?

Thanks! I have these cheap desktop usb video lights from a manic attempt at streaming a few years ago, I’m using one for my SAB work and it worked great for agar pics too.

As for the fluff, I swabbed two plates and took two transfers from the densest parts of one plate, this was the better looking plate of those transfers. I left one swabbed plate alone to see how it grew and like I said still no color changes or anything that I can tell. But all the growth looks pretty similar, just thin cottony possibly-mycelium, it does seem to have kind of stalled out on those original swabbed plates though.

The flecks are soot/burnt matter from torching my blade, I had some thick mycelium from the GT LC inoculation plate get stuck on there and refused to come off on a alcohol towel, so some would come off when cooling the blade after torching.

Ehhh I forgot to loosen the lid on my agar bottle during my PC cycle. Luckily it didn't explode, will the agar itself be ok?

If you open it after it cools to room temp, it's going to suck in dirty air from the environment.  If you have a FFU/LFH it's not a big deal but it can be a problem in a SAB if you don't allow plenty of time for contams to settle out of the air in it.

First time doing agar. Let me begin by saying. Spore syringe in a SAB is for the birds. As soon as I can in getting a small LFH for just this. G2g in sab is one thing.

This is B+ from an online supplier that has great reviews in store bought agar dishes (I bought them when I bought everything I needed to make my own.. just wanted a physical one to see consistency). Needless to say it was a train wreck.

What am I looking at? It sure doesn't look right to me.
I put a little liquid in a baked shot glass.  Then used an inoculation loop. My hands not steady enough at 50 to drop directly into agar.

Syringes are for the birds. Go with spore prints to agar. Syringes for pf tek.

I went with a company that I've had good success with but they didn't offer the prints I wanted just syringe. I just need one jar so I can make my own prints. Trust me, I'd rather a print. I don't want to learn and do a PF tech. I will if I absolutely have to.  Grain and bulk is all I know.

But, I still would like to know what I'm looking at. Contamination in a jar I can spot quick. This agar thing is new to me.

Ive had horrible luck with syringes. Tubs that just sat there and never fruited or gave messed up pathetic looking shrooms. Wasnt until I got stuff for free trading with the community that things took off. Ymmv of course.

I have to be in the group longer before I can
Could i squirt a little on a slide and let it dry out in my SAB  with a little aluminum foil tent over it, then gather spores that way?. Anything better than what I went through with a syringe.
