Terence McKenna
    #2829009 -

Hey I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts were on Terence McKenna. I just finished listening to The Search for the Original Tree of Knowledge and I have to say I am amazed. A lot of what he has to say is right one. Some things a little out there but definitely an eye opener.

I like TM a lot. My life hasn't improved any for listening to him though. Maybe he's right about some of what he says. You get used to his voice after a few minutes.

Yeah I have to say his voice takes a few minutes to get use to. Shpoongle definitely did a good job in using it for A New Way To Say Hooray though.

He is a great writer and though-provoker and cosmic buffoon (in a good way). His observations on society are much more salient than his ideas about psychedelics. He tosses ideas about, not as facts, buts as catalysts for further research and discussion.

Summation: read (or listen) and enjoy, but don't take him more seriously than he takes himself.

I agree he is an entertaining writer, but he goes a bit off the deep end occasionally. I've read his books, but I don't take them very seriously, though, he is obviously very intelligent.

That's the conclusion I've reached. Some of his stuff is very scientific, while others are merely the discussing of ideas. He makes much more sense when I see it that way. He's trying to put into words, his experiences, whether wrong or right. I think he was frustrated with not being able to discuss them in an intelligent, but experimental, whimsical way, which is probably why a lot of his attention is focused against the drug war.

A lot of great ideas and interesting way of looking at things. Thought provoking and silly at the same time. Sort of a University Professor version of Bill Hicks.

The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

I adore him.

I love how he has these wonderful colorful ideas and just tosses them out there for our consideration. He is a soul full of magic and lust for life and extreme loquacity and intelligence! I truly love him and connected deeply with him on my last trip. He is alive within us who have incorporated his wisdom, love and curiousity into ourselves.

Swami, I love the book Archaic Revival which I bought from you- so don't worry, it is being well read, over and over and fully enjoyed.

Terrence McKenna makes life delightful.

Glad you are enjoying it, PG. It was hard to part with.

I probably have about 70+ hours of Terence audio, which I have listened to many times over.  Every time I listen I hear a little more.  He is just spellbinding. Fiercely intelligent and far from the flake that some people make him out to be. Like Swami said he was very aware of his own image and knew exactly how he came across.

I think he was definitely on to something with the novelty and time wave zero thing, and the year 2012. I just joined a group at yahoo called novelty lifeboat, which spun off of the original group some time back. There is an eclectic mixture of people, so the posts are varied and quite educational.
The website that the moderator is building is really cool as far as aesthetics and content. http://floatingworldweb.com/NOVELTYLIFEBOAT/map.htm
