You couldnt just sterilize it in the bottle with the rest of the substrate?

Sorry, I was referring to using them in bulk sub for tubs with the pasteurizing comment. But yes, with bottles, you can sterilize WC as part of the sub.

Has anyone had success using ziploc bags instead of cut 2L soda bottles to fruit these?

I figured it'd work but I have no idea how to dial it/how many holes to make 😅

(I feel like a dumbass for asking these questions)

Pins as in needle sized?

A bunch as in 5-6 or 15-20?

😬

Yes, 15 is a good number.

Honestly you don't even need holes if you can get the bag to stay on without the rubber bands. They'll get air through the bottom

When you say "dry rye", this means pre-cooked/hydrated yeah?

I don't have the patience for video editing these days, so I'm documenting the bottle tek process in a series of short videos on my youtube channel, with all the videos being compiled in a playlist. I'll post the final playlist when I have all the portions complete, but just wanted to share here. I'm working on the inoculation video now.

A couple of questions:

1. Using metal lids on pint mason glass jars: should I be drilling holes and using SFD's or should I simply invert the inner lid?

2. Anyone tried Tidal Wave, Melmac or Natalensis in bottles? Is there any reason not to try these varieties?

Another question:

1. With wide-mouth pint jars, how full would you fill it with substrate?

80% = ~380ml — sound about right?

2/3 to 3/4 full. Especially since it's all in one(AIO), it'll be a lot harder to shake than grain jars so you need room.

Two questions, first time doing bottle tek.

1. How do i determine if a jar/bottle is clean?
For grain jars i used Stipe's videos on axenic grain and looked for metabolites showing on the glass. Here where grain is mixed with coir I'm not sure how to ve sure the thing is clean.

2.
I'm experimenting with different sized bottles. Have 2 pp5 plastic 500ml containers.
Instead of putting a bag over it for fruiting i was thinking of trying to do what Mateja does for her BRF cackes and fruit the bottles in a water tub.

5 liter shoebox, dubbtubed for space with 1 inch water at the bottom and only two 500 ml bottles in the tub.

Is this something worth trying or are there any arguments against this making it a futile attempt?

Muda, I have started thinking along these lines, to try after my second set of PF cakes, which are almost ready to begin fruiting.  I was sent here by Baba Yaga after I had expressed interest in another post by Violet.

It looks to me like you are on to something here, and I am eager to give it a try.  I intend to be a hobby grower only, so the drawback you mentioned shouldn't apply to me.  My understanding about the use of multiple ingredients in your substrate is that each supplies differing nutritional elements for the mycelium, and I imagine you have arrived at the formulae after seeing better yields with more elements, is that right?

I think I might like to start with something a little simpler. As a brand new grower, I am thus far only familiar with the PF Tek mixture of BRF, verm and gypsum.  I have done a coir hot soak and thus have partially sanitized coir available also. I admit to not having read all the pages of your post, and perhaps this question has been answered, but if I wanted to use a single sub, or perhaps just a mixture of two parts, what might you recommend?

Thanks in advance.  Advice much appreciated.

I suggest that you start simple and use coir only for your sub. the coir will only provide the water the shrooms need, all of the nutrition will come from your spawn. After you have succeeded at growing a few bottles of spawn+coir you can then start adding ingredients and decide for yourself if they make a difference.
