FFS I’m having the worst brain fart and can’t remember my water, coir verm ratios.  Search bar being a twat and just givin me crap threads. Can someone real quick spoon feed my sorry ass the average quarts  water per brick and verm. I wanna say it was 4 quarts per brick.

Just did a fresh run and happened to log in detail.

My 9qt PC holds 4qt jars perfectly so all of my "cycles" typically consist of a 4 jar "run".

One EcoEarth 7L brick is supposed to yield 8 quarts.

This last run:
* 1 Brick = 680g
* 3.4L water (680g x 5 = 3400)
* 2 qts verm
* 1 cup gypsum (optional)
* double optional - I'll save up and use two spent kona coffee grounds from my Krups espresso machine - TBH haven't seen much difference with or without it. But I'll try every now and then to see if there's any change if I have fresh grounds on me.

I'll use 1qt grain: 1.5qt coir with .5qt top layer and usually end up with about 2qts leftover which I'll throw into weird containers like cups, bottles, small storage containers to screw around with or give to friends as "gifts" to discover with.

NOTE: as far as water is concerned I used to always use 4qts of water. After reading ShaperDreamings posts about "near" field capacity, I've been paring back on the water, then spraying down my top layer of plain substrate with the idea of it having more moisture up top. Not enough data yet, but it seems to minimize some of the side pinning I experienced in the past, until the sub shrinks, but even in that case, the side pins seem to grow straight up instead of whacko, so aren't as much of an issue.

Hope this is helpful. Thanks for all you've shared.

WFG :smile:

Howdy, folks. I haven't grown in a year, but wanted to update the few who have reached out asking about my method of doing bags in a box.

I actually wound up getting pretty comfortable with it. Behold, the super complex and expensive modified SAB.

Kidding, I flipped a 115QT upright on it's end and Saran wrapped the "front" (where the lid would snap on). These were the first "models." After reinforcing the wrap with clear tape, I cut arm holes in the bottom. It did the trick.

Here's me pouring a stack of plates in there.

Sealed it in a little closet with painter's tape/plastic to minimize drafts, but probably overkill.

Edit: I wrote this kind of confusingly earlier so I'll try and clarify.

Using a metal coat hanger and a quart-size PP5 lid, I built a little shelf in the top right corner. This is to set my master up and away from all the action (until it's ready to go).

I cut a metal coat hanger into 2 strips. After heating the end, I stabbed it through (outside to inside). Heating it up again, I stabbed it all the way through the rim of the PP5 lid (creating 2 holes), and through the SAB again. This holds the lid in place and supports it like a piece of rebar. I did the same thing with the second strip for an additional support beam. It's super sturdy and can handle a full RM quart master, no problem.

I'm not handy at all with building shit so I just went with my initial idea using shit I had on hand. I'm sure lots of folks can find better ways to do this. Or just build a hood, lol.

I don't think they're shown in the photos I posted. Sorry. I'll try and snap pics of it next week when I hit my storage unit.

These are the last batch of bags I ran with too little water in my sterilizer. Many were compromised with pin holes. The next 20-25 or so bags I ran after this came through unscathed, with most hitting 100% and looking healthy, although I wasn't able to spawn them.

Unfortunately I can't find the last pics I took with the rows of healthy bags. Pissing me off, but whatever. I promise, the SAB had a decent success rate once the bags made it through the sterilization run.

Even with my sterilizer fucking up a decent amount of bags, I still probably hit 40-50% while working out the SAB kinks. Without doomed bags and a bit of familiarity with bags in general, it's obviously much higher.

But still, keep in mind, this isn't a large sample size. And while my last 20 or so bags looked great, I didn't get a chance to fruit them.

Anyway, here's some grows I did with bags in the SAB:

Anyway, nothing special, but bags can 100% be easily done in an SAB. I always wanted to have a proper Tek for this with videos and such, but I'm unable ATM, so my apologies. One day, perhaps.

But for now, hoping this can help those who can't get a LFH, but still want to scale up. Just flip a damn tall tote on it's side, yo.

Hell yeah stareatclouds.  :rockon:  I've used this exact method for a couple more vertical-friendly applications, but with an old,  blue rubbermaid I'd lost the lid for and was storing books in.  I've seen this being done with a box too but that makes me cringe for some reason... :uhoh:

Oh yeah, I like to slip a little magnet into my left index finger of my glove for better maneuvering in the big SAB (image is an unrelated LI lid transfer).

Before the transfer, I'll have both bag and master inside, wiped completely and covered with clean iso-soaked paper towels. The master would have the ring removed and lid loose.

Once the bag is opened up, I grab the master from the shelf with my right hand, and firmly press the left index on the lid (go nail first and then roll onto magnet so it doesn't yank the lid up). Once you're in position (like 1 second later), remove the lid, dump your grain, and run the last few steps in reverse to smoothly return your master. Be mindful to keep the lid face down, away from the bag, and use your free fingers to stabilize the mouth of the bag (easy to hit the bag and collapse it, spilling grain everywhere). Then close the bag up and tie the bastard.

I actually tried recording a video of this for y'all last year. I was rushing and on little sleep and accidentally put the magnet in on the wrong end, lol. Not a good vid.

This might be more trouble than its worth for some. It's preference. Felt like including it since maneuvering the jar + bag can be cumbersome and this is helpful when you need the lid back on.

Awesome, man. What all did you wind up using yours for? And do you have any links to the other vertical boxes? Definitely want to see what others have come up with using such a simple design. I did a bunch of searches, but only found my older posts about it.

Frank sat in a little weed grow tent and removed the lid to his SAB, IIRC. He'd just go very slowly. I always wondered how small a "room" would have to be to become the SAB itself. Seems like you could be very still inside a clean car or something and get away with some shit.

Magnets...

Blue Meanies were definitely some of my best fruiters... usually nice pinsets that turn into nice big clusters. Usually pretty solid too. Wish you the best!
