thanks for the tek man, it really clears up a lot of questions i've had.
one that i still have though is...

BTW.... water content of the grain IS VERY important.... makes the difference between 15 days and 25 days for 100 % colonization.... trust me.. i know !

f8l I'm using my spent jars because I don't have a PC and don't want to wait an extra month for that part of the tek.

Is miracle grow for vegetables only manure, or is it all that plant food shit? Because I went to a nursery today and bought organic tomato + vegetable plant food which I think is like little chunks of stuff, not sure what. Would that work for this tek? And if I can't find straw, because home depot and the nursery didn't have it, would it still work if I just used that plant food by itself, sort of like using poo by itself?

I think that this is to long for pastuerisation, about half that time would be better (40 minutes) and a thermometer is going to be essential to maintain the correct temprature, otherwise they could easily end up boiling it.




I believe pasturzation is around 1 hour 30 minutes. (correct me if I'm wrong). Yes, I suppose a cheap thermometer is advisable. *noted in new tek*

Yes, the water content does matter. In the updated tek I added "if you pick up a handful and squeeze only a few drops of water should come out." <-- This is generally accepted as the 'proper water content'

Miracle Grow for Vegatables contains (dont have the bag with me, but offhand..) Organic Poo (from Florida), vermiculite, bark, and a few other ingredients I have forgotten. Using composted manure from a nearby nursery should work well. I have used the "miracle grow" since many people do not have access to poo. But in my opinion, the miracle grow performs just as well.

No, just follow the tek, dont make any unnecessary substitutions (with the possible exception of replacing the miracle grow with poo taken a farmer.

Again, you don't want to modify the tek. And I'm betting this wouldn't work well either. Like I mentioned earlier, you can find pre-cut straw at Michaels and possibly other arts and craft stores.

Poops knows what hes talking about, and im backing him up by saying that pasteurization at 170 for only 30 min works just as well. in theory, all you need to do is heat up everything to 170 degrees for a minute and it will be pasteurized. The reason it is kept in longer depends on the thickness and tightness of your dung. the harder it is for the hot water to penetrate the longer it takes.

Well I went to Home Depot and they didn't have "Miracle Grow for Vegetables", just "Miracle Grow for roses" and for plants, not specifically for vegetables so I didn't think they would work as well. Try looking at Walmart and Lowes (might want to call them first before driving over)... then let me know if you find it so we can clear up where to find it.. I'm pretty sure swim bought it at walmart.

STERILIZE DOES NOT EQUAL PASTURIZE. Sterilize means a pressure cooker at high temps... Pasturize means temps around 160-180. Yes, it would be a good idea to pasturize.

Ya I meant pasteurize, and ya I'll do that. The nearest Lowes is like 30 miles away and Walmart is about 20 miles away... I'm too lazy to drive that far so I think I'll just try this nursery stuff I got, maybe its a hidden gem no one's tried before and I'll get great results and share them with you guys.

Everyone's first mistake is to try to "modify" a tek. DONT DO IT. If you are following a tek, follow every single last word, dont modify anything. I would highly suggest not using whatever it is you have.

considering i've always just read about the grain jar lid with two holes - 1 being the polyfill filter.. the second being the injection port taped over afterwards.. so yah, my vote is for pictures :-)
