I asked for a Pressure Cooker for Christmas. I got one... but it's a small one. Only way I can pressure cook a quart jar is if I turn it on its side. Pain in the ass only doing one jar at a time... and have to be careful about moisture getting inside.

So if you have a choice, go BIG!!! Size DOES matter. With Pressure cookers anyway.

2 things, 1 i have colonized a couple jars of wbs and have come to the conclusion that yes, the water content is VERY important, on another note, i have not been able to obtain any straw, as i do not have any of the afor mentioned arts and crafts stores, i however was able to find some very dry salt hay which is not green at all and cow compost manure, i was wondering if this would work?

Store bought composted manure sucks. They sell straw at Wal-mart where I live. Look in the arts and crafts section. It was only 25 cents a brick.

Nice tek. Seems a common problem is an undersized pc. My plan calls for the purchace of 50X or 75X sterilizer from American.
Any adjustment I need to make using the sterilizer over pc, or just keep the same temps and times???????

Doesn't affect the mycelium or mushroooms really. Don't quote me on this though for I am not 100% sure.

You can't pastuerize something that contains no nutrients such as a casing medium. I'm not completely sure about this either though.

Nice outline but I'd imagine you'd get alot of aborts without fanning.

People have been doing this for ever. Sterilizing whole grain, spawning it, fruiting it. Nothing new really.

I am interested in continuing to update this tek for errors / additions (including pictures) /clarifications. If you are interested, message me on shroomery or on aol.

The goal of the modifications would be to get this tek listed next to the PFTEK on Shroomery's Basic Grow Guides. Thanks.

Funger said:If this is truley a tek for newbies... you may want to tell them to release the pressure before waiting for it to cool... Or they could be waiting a while.

Releasing the pressure without letting it cool first will screw your water content in the jars. Basically, while they are still anywhere above 212 degrees (100 Celcius) they need to remain under pressure or else they will instantly boil and the water will escape as steam. The pressure keeps the boiling point higher so you can sterilize without boiling the water out of the jars (the whole point of using a PC in the first place). So the slow cooldown to at least under the boiling point of water at your elevation (note: in Denver at 5000ft or so, this is even lower temp than 212 - that spec is at sea level), then perhaps you could blow off the rest of the pressure (if there is any by then).

Spudz76 is right - if you dump the pressure from a hot PC, the jars will boil dry. Also, there is no need for a separate inoculation port. Just slip the needle in past the polyfill.

Does the water content of your poo and straw matter that much? How wet should it be. Will this directly effect how fast or if the substrate colonizes?

Water content is very important. To much, to little no myc. Got to be in that fine line and just alittle bit over that fine, CONTAMS

Spudz is right about the PC. You let it cool first (only removing it from the heat) then you remove the weight/lift the rocker/ect to let the pressure out.

Did you mention shaking the grains while they are still hot to prevent sticking kernals? If so I missed it.

Also you mentioned to someone else using 1/2 quarts woul affect his yeild but how much spawn you use doesnt effect yeild, its how much substrate. The poo/straw is your substrate, not the grain. Thats just used to get white stuff going and it doesnt matter how much or how little grain you use. That would only affect colonization time of the poo not how big your mushrooms get.

Excellent tek though. Very good attention to detail for the most part.
