Nah, they're all growing mostly on the top. Maybe a weird effect of the pics?

How do you tell the difference between myc eating away food coloring vs contam?

I don't understand the question.

Experience. The point of agar is it's a 2D surface which means you should see growth on the X and Y axis but not Z axis, so generally, you look at what is on the surface of your plate and make your conclusions from that

Yeah it's kind of non sequitur

@OP of the question: I think the point is once you've gained enough experience with plates mistaking contam for a change in food color isn't an occurrence that would happen

See I'm wondering if they meant how do you tell the difference between cube myc eating food colouring vs contam eating food colouring.

Which I don't think you can based on just the food colouring being eaten. That's where your previous answer about the surface comes in.

Yes exactly.

I am new so I don't have enough experience to tell when the discoloration of the food coloring is from myc eating it or if it's discoloration from contamination growing. I can tell when the contamination is obvious, like turning black or green, but a slight discoloration is more subtle. And there's posts that say to check underneath a plate for hidden contamination riding along.

That hidden contam in that situation is still on the same side as the myc, the myc has just grown over it.

Black agar batch in the bag! I feel like I’m still pouring the cups a little heavy but I’m stoked at how black they turned out. I can’t wait to get them growing it’s going to look so sweet.

I think he was referring to the very deep agar providing tons of moisture for fruiting vs a normal thin poured plate.

I haven't done a study, but my general memory is I've gotten plins more often without the charcoal. I've probably done half the plates I've done with charcoal and about half without.

I do seem to notice more rhizo with charcoal.

I was wondering if pouring them so thick had any effect. It’s pretty tough to gauge those pours. My last batch they were nearly full cups. I got like 6 cups off a 400ML batch of agar 🀦🏻

I just cover the bottom of my plates when I pour. If I know the culture is going to sit for a month or more then I make a little thicker.

Colonized plates are known to cause pins.

This is my first time using agar and I knocked up 8 Pasty plates a few days ago. Is this tomentose mycelium or bacteria?

I have a couple plates that definitely have bacteria on them and the rest of the plates don't look like anything is happening as of yet.

How fast did that appear?

I have a syringe in my fridge that looks exactly like that on agar and looks like this in brf

It’s mycelium. I’ve actually never seen a type of bacteria that looks like myc.
