Yeah, significant other's can get twitchy about the strangest things. One would think the stranger the more they would be confused and let it go.

Seriously though, I dont go to Hindsight's level. I have two plastic A4 trays for the hot water and the yoga mat and a reasonable blanket. Min 24 plates, max 35. It does still take 1/3rd of the diningroom table surface over night.

The results are worth it.

Well 30secs of shaking to prevent me having to run the whole cycle over again is worth it to me.

Pre boiling is 100% unnecessary:

Doesn't even require shaking. It's like I have a sixth sense, my belt starts to itch...

I disagree about not requiring shaking, maybe it works for you but everytime I just poured in agar and pced i got a puck on top and that was just .2% agar for sslc. Ive always had to homogenize the mixture first

i am in the same boat, i always have to pre boil. everybody in the media bottle never works for me.

The Agar definitely tends to make a puck at the bottom if you don't stir it.

I’m curious what procedure all these people are following to have issues. I put my malt extract in the bottle, then the agar, then the water and straight into the PC. After a 10min vent and 37min PC for 400ml it’s perfect with no preshaking/mixing.

Boiling before boiling is still just boiling.

I just ran a sleeve of plates with unshaken, raw agar/DME, sediment layer accumulated at the bottom of the media bottle. My results are always the same, even after thousands of plates.

Not sure what you folks are doing wrong but boiling something that's about to be boiled further, under pressure, doesn't change the chemistry in a way that increases it's ability to dissolve. There's no plausible causal relationship.

Just think about it for 2 seconds. The heat and pressure of the autoclave is actually more effective than boiling on a stove. Perhaps it's because most folks are running agar for only 20 mins, I pc for 45.

Maybe it’s the mechanical stirring that takes place before hand? Just spit balling.

I didnt say anything about boiling, just that I need to homogenize the mixture before pcing. However you do that is your prerogative apparently my pc is just not capable of doing it on its own.

I do no-pours so I just boil it in the bottle, maybe for no-pours it's different because of the higher temps and longer time in the PC. That's the only explanation I can come up with.

Try leaving the lid a bit more loose than it is already

The heat of the pc will dissolve the agar and dme completely, the cycle will mix the  contents more thoroughly than shaking vigorously ever will.

I'm a little slow remembering which one I do is called but I boil my lme agar mix and pour my plates then PC them. If I don't do that then I get a bunch of agar at the bottom of my pouring vessel and some super soft agar plates. I'm assuming y'all are talking about PC'ING then pouring your plates. Maybe they are sitting too long and the agar settles? Where if you take them out while hot you can swirl it to mix it together? Just guessing I'm an idiot when it comes to agar.

I don't boil, but i do heat and mix until will homogenized. I also bloom my agar in cold water for 10 min and filter everything through a 200 micron sieve. Not at all required, but I thrive on tedium and may have an minor obsession with plate clarity. 😂

No boil, no mix, no fridge or filters:

Unfortunately I think I’m about to retire the food coloring in my plates. It doesn’t serve a purpose except making me go “oooo blue.” Which is a big plus, but not big enough to continue doing it.
