Yes, it is mycelium just not the mycelium you're looking for.

You should start over from spore

Is it a random mycillium contam then?  And yeah, I'll start over on that one.

Yes, that is the mycelium of some kind of mold.

All fungi produce mycelium. I guess more accurately they are mycelium

Right, yeast doesn't produce mycelium

alright, so that raises a question my pea brain hasn't been able to reason about.

What's the deal with Nutritional Yeast in agar? Yeast is yeast, a competitive organism to what we want, which is our choice of fungal culture, be that what it may. So why add yeast to the mix and potentially introduce sterilization process resistant microbes to a mix that we hope to be sterile?

Full disclosure, I've done zero googling on if yeast can survive PC temps nor its competitiveness towards mushroom mycelium.

Nutritional yeast is dead long before we ever get it. Fuck, they sell cheese flavored nutritional yeast that people sprinkle on their popcorn

The PC *sterilizes* agar anyway. Even if it were live yeast going in, it wouldn't be coming out. the nutritional yeast adds extra nutrients for the mycelium. I'll never go back to not using it

I use any type of yeast I have. Sometimes I use active dry yeast for bread. It all dies in the pc. :whathesaid:

appreciate the lack of flame, but my underlying question is why add it to the agar?

what specifically is it offering to the mycelium, or is adding it just a hold over from the clandestine "ol Hippie3 did it, said it worked, so i just keep on doin' it since nothin gone wrong" TEK days?

completely missed this.. pretty sure you need to use active dry yeast for bread unless you're making heavy bread or sour dough, which you still can make your own yeast cultures for. you makin a funny at me? :drysmash:

Proteins and a myriad of other nutrients otherwise unavailable to the mycelium with DME or GSA alone. It's not old hippie talk. I'm actually pretty confident it's fairly new to the agar scene

ah ok, that's makes sense. i'm quickly becoming much more curious about microbiology in general, and am trying to understand the purpose of each additive.

for instance, LME is for nutrients for a whole myriad of fungi and bacteria. Dyes can be used for a variety of reasons, though one must be mindful depending on the cultures they're looking to work with.

i've come across a few whitepapers in the past 24 hours regarding the use of charcoal, but haven't fully grokked anything substantial yet. maybe it's a throwback to my 2000s era goth days, but those black plates look dark and mysterious, even if the charcoal doesn't do anything significant.

sorry, a little tipsy here. so, long story short, i'm quickly becoming very curious about microbiology, specifically bacterias. it'd be super cool to have some kind of guide, similar to a mushroom field guide, for hobby mycologists that shows cultures of various bacterias (like, I'd like to know wtf that mucus-y yellow shit that's hit a few of my plates is).

even further I'm really curious how the hell pediatricians shoved a swap down my throat and were able to confirm i had strep in a super non-sterile environment. agar has opened a brave new world to me, and i'm diving in.
