It won't be as pretty, but you can put a small piece of tape (duck/duct) on the inside or outside over the too low holes and drill some higher. The shroomies don't mind the hillbilly-ghetto decor much.


Probably will run a few rounds of this before just trashing them, I remember when I used to do 1.5" polyfil stuffed holes the duct tape was always a giant PITA to scrub off when I went to clean the bins later on.

So since this is going to be my first time around growing as well using this monotub, I just let it be and let it grow, only mist if needed? Just wondering since it isn't like the others where you use polyfil/tape

Do yall tape the side and/or top holes during colonization with this tek, then pull the tape off to introduce fruiting conditions? I'm 4 days in, first time using this tek, and I taped the three holes on each of the long sides, but left the 5 holes on each of the short sides open. Things are smelling and looking good so far...I think.

Nope, says right in the original post to go straight to fruiting. Ive been getting pins in 8-10 days on avg with straight to fruit.

If your using the same tub as pasty perhaps. All depends on your specific conditions though. I like to put a layer of mp on all holes and then open her up when I see pins. Just personal preference though I think.

Pretty sure Pasty designed it to just be left as is from spawn to harvest though but you know people are gunna play :heytheresexy:

My sub doesn't seem to be fully colonized around the bottom holes does this look alright? Still very much a noob here

There is colonization,
but it´s getting dry from the holes.
Too much air exchange up to your environment.
Tape holes up with micropore.

It’s colonized but drying out. Those holes look to be far too low. I suggest in the OP to have them at 5” up assuming a sub of around 12-15 quarts and about 4 quarts spawn. That provides at least 2” of clearance for the sub below the holes. Alternatively drilling the holes too low is just as detrimental to the performance and will make for a sub optimal tub design. This is not really optional,  this design demands 2” clearance.

Aw hell guess that's what I get for not following directions properly. Thanks for the response guess I'll just e tape the lower holes and re drill them higher up

I just want to say I think this is the way to go. Both tubs filled in thick!!! I really did not have to do much at all thoughout the whole process. The first two weeks I had tape over 10 of the 18 holes. The sides of the bins stayed humid/wet. The surface conditions stayed prime with hundreds of little droplets. Once it pinned I removed most of the tape leaving the two lower end holes covered.Another week and full flat canopy of healthy B+ and Z.

I ended up putting my RustyWhyte in a dubtub similar sized footprint as the 66qrt but not the height. I had two bins sitting around and did not want to drill in these as not sure if the method would work with only a couple inches from top of substrate to lid. I'll probably just open it up a little once it pins for FAE and just have a little more babysitting to do to maintain good surface conditions. Looking good so far.
