It works for most large tub sizes.
Just space your holes accordingly.

Searched the thread and couldn’t get a clear answer. Does anyone know what pasty uses as a casing layer for PE’s for these monos?

i'm curious since these are all larger tubs what to do for mini mono tubs to get the same effects?

For example i have 4xs 19qt "mini" mono tubs. 2 of them i have 1" holes. 2 on the long side lower and 1 on each short side higher. the other two i did .25" holes down the long sides... i'm trying to find the optimum for the 19qt tubs in combination with my humid environment (which will get cooler/dryer in the winter)

Yes, the concept works. You just reduce the size of the holes depending on tub size. I learned from mistakes. Smaller tub= smaller holes.:mushroom2:

In my shoeboxes I've had 1.5-2" substrate depth with a 1/4-1/2" coir layer on top. So for a full size monotub you can just scale up the thickness of the coir layer in proportion to the sub and its still good?

Hi everyone,

I am reading on the different types of fruiting chambers and came across this thread. I am impressed with its simplicity and effectiveness and wondering if one could also use this method for "not strictly monotub" applications.

My idea is to fill a shallow baking tray with rye spawn and a casing layer  inside a 47L clear plastic box (see photo attached). The surrounding area is filled with hydrated perlite/porous clay granulate to keep the humidity up.

The reason for this modification is, that I do not have enough spawn for a proper monotub. I know that I could choose a smaller plastic container, but
that's the one I already have and think it's interesting to try out if there are no obvious reasons against.

Have you had success with PE and coir alone as a casing layer?

Just out of curiosity, how many of you have found that drilling the optional holes helped improve your grows?  The humidity inside my house is typically around 45-50 percent.

If you don't have a fan running around your grow area I'd recommend an extra hole and maybe prep substrate with a tiny bit more water if it leads to it drying out a lil.

If you do have circulating FAE I'd just stick with that and then Crack the lid during the last day or two of fruiting

I used to drill the extra hole when my grow was in a closet with very minimal air movement and it for sure helped.

My room stays at 60% RH, so I use 20x 1/4" holes per tub to balance things out.  If you see water pooling on the surface, poke a couple more holes in the tub or increase the tubs access to fresh air.

I´ve been getting way-to-wet results from using this methood. Allot of water pooling on the surface by the walls of the tub. Not blaming this methood of course, but it´s most likely my recipe. What recipes are you guys using for this TEK? Here I´m refering to sub:spawn ratios, and casing layers vs no casing layers, etc.

I took inspiration from the “SFF Shoebox Assembly TEK”:
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26009662

So the recipe I´m using is 2:2:1, meaning two parts spawn, two parts substrate, mixed together, and then 1 part substrate on top as a casing layer. Then I spray the surface for 20 seconds ala Shoebox TEK. So 2 liters of spawn, 2 liters of sub, and then 1 liter substrate casing in a 20 liter tub.

Just wondering what I should change here.

Skip the casing layer?

Skip the spraying of water on the casing layer?

Keep the recipe and drill more holes?

Anything else?

I would vote for eliminating the spraying on the top layer(pseudo-casing). If the substrate is already at field capacity you should not need to spray for quite a while. At least not until the substrate or myc poking through starts to look dry. And possibly not until after the first flush in ideal conditions.

Yes skipping the spraying was also my hunch.

But I'm still curious to know what recipes and ratios others are using

totally agree. i've followed info from this site and my last grow produced a great yeild. i never opened the tubs till first harvest. so, no spraying until second flush

Couple questions:

1. Using a 66qt tote, I plan on using 10# of casing mix with 12 1/2 pint jars, will the 5" measurement be ok for the bottom holes, or will I need to go higher up?

2. My "Grow Room" has a fan that is on high and runs 24/7 (Doubles as my office ) should I go with a head and pop the additional holes or not? The rooms ambient conditions are typically 76F and 40% humidity.

3. Maybe I missed it, but light sources? If I open the blinds in the room, it will get un-godly hot as it faces East,  as well as my hours do not fully align with a 12hr sun availability, so I was going to use LEDs, and drape towels over the bins. Any suggestions on good LED lights?

- With a towel over the bins, does anyone know how this will affect the FAE? I have a small grow going now, and have had a towel over it, temp and humidity seem to be ok, but no condensation on the sides. Grow is using Cakes and perlite.

TIA

Towel over bins = not a great idea.

Don't drill extra holes until you know you need them.

Search for 5000- 6500k bulbs via eBay or at your local department store.  The higher lumen & kelvin the better.  Set up a standing lamp or something of the like rather than warm your room too much with sun.

I dunno what to really tell you beyond that because you're not using it as described in the tek, you're fruiting cakes.  I dunno what you meant by using casing in your first question. You gotta measure stuff yourself if you're going to experiment..  Good luck, though.

this is the best monotub design you can make, at least if using it in a traditional manner (i.e. not fruiting cakes).  I highly recommend whipping these up as directed in the tek; the results are beyond consistent.
