What do yours look like?

Idk if there’s a correlation between size and potency. I’ve got such a wide range of tamp fruits that I’m curious though. Some are pencil thick and 9 inches long while others are like toothpick size.

I just need to start eating them I guess.

This is chicon nindo spawned 7 days ago, you can see it still has a bit to go. So far I’ve spawned 6 quarts of nindo and two of huautla de jimenez and all 8 quarts none produced in vitro stones BUT, all 8 quarts when spawned produced stones within days as you can see in the picture. At least for the nindo the stones are the same color as tamps (unlike Jalisco which were red/purplish) believe I had a picture somewhere.

Also I’ve made three LC cultures of the nindo. One vastly multi cultural, two was selective multi culture, three was an isolate biopsy. So far the vastly multicultural LC is the fastest. We shall see about the fruit.

I'm starting to wonder if I should just dig through the substrate for stones or wait until it stops fruiting in hopes for stronger stones. The way the mushrooms are turning out I'm losing hope on the stones being any better.

It seems to be one or the other sometimes. The tubs I’ve had fruit well had zero stone most of the time. I think it’s related to wetness too cuz my first couple tamps I ran on the dry side and got decent pinsets and stones, once I started using the pans chamber with the fogger I’ve not had one significant stone.

This plate exploded overnight. Yesterday was just a couple little bumps.

Nice. I’d recommend grabbing a xfer from this spot and using the resulting culture to noc grain.

Did you pick that section because it’s the same part that’s pinning clusters?,

I’ve had a couple single plate pins before but this ones next level. I figured all the knots were just gonna sit there like usual or maybe start stones.

Yeah, I was thinking that it might be that it was the growth leading to the little stones-- seems like a smart approach. Remind me-- what is your agar type?

Once I get everything settled from a move next month I'm going to go hog wild on a lot of the projects I have waiting-- and I want to get some stone-filled mycobags started near the top of that list

Yep, I like grabbing the cluster spots.

The xfer from this area of this plate:

I get way better pinning on plates with a dilute PDA agar which allows for easy selection of dense pinning characteristics.

Damn-- I might have to switch from MEA for some tamp experiments then--

Mine have always been lme. I’ve gotten plate pins from every species I’ve grown, cubes/pans/tamp.

How long does it typically take for pins to form?

Some gorgeous caps in there. That makes me feel better about some of my last tubs. I’m used to seeing people with super long wild fruits but mine have been much more like the ones in your pictures.

With plate pins the tamps seem to go quicker than other species. This plate i just posted was made 8/31 so just over a month. With other ones it seems to take twice that.

For sure. I was referring specifically for tamps and other stone producers.  I’ve noticed my cultures tend to pin much more readily on pda.

@ Ambrose - It varies but I usually see pinning on plates, regardless of the type of media or species, after the culture has grown out to the edge of the plate.

Thanks, bro!  Yeah, it’s all about the FAE in my experience.  The more they get the better they look and will produce the mature caps needed for printing.  You just have to keep up the rh so they don’t dry out.  I’ve had caps that were half the size they should have been simply due to restricted FAE early in the fruit development just for a day or 2.

I have never seen a pin on any of my plates-- 2 kinds of tamps, pans, cubes, Semperviva, Zaps--

I guess I'm just bad luck Chuck :fishsmack:

Ha...some strains are likely more prone than others for sure so could just be luck of the draw.  Definitely give pda a try with your tamps and see if that helps.  That said, I’ve had plenty of tamps/stone producers on pda that didn’t pin, so nothing is guaranteed.

I'm sure you're right -- maybe it's also you guys doing better ID/selection of ideal growth on a plate.

My primary focus this past year has been on contamination avoidance (an uphill battle I have only in the past few months tamed), so I've been far more likely to just transfer the first clean uniform sectors I see rather than specifically looking for stuff with more ideal growth patterns for the given type of shroom.

Learning to improve that selection process will help me get a better head start, and I hope with time I'll develop "the eye" and will better recognize that ideal growth on a given germ plate.

Will definitely give some PDA some love-- any recipe/strength per liter of what you guys typically make it at? Been hearing light nutes are better, and next round was going to use half strength LME-- so I'm curious what levels you use for the potato and dex.
