Thanks for the response I also got two of these tupperwares both with one 1/2 pint brf cake to half pint of coir with a 1/2 pint coir top layer. Got the lids upside down for GE

Hey, all...Here's a pic of my first shoebox from my first run of BRF cakes.  The cakes were inoc'd on 8/22.  This is day 17 after they were grated into a small "shoebox" (app. 4 qt Sterilite clip box) on 9/3.  I used 2 1/2 pint jars made from a multispore syringe of Ecuador cubensis. Obviously not going to be winning the prize at the county fair but I'm thrilled to get to this point.

I'm seeing more pins pushing up, so I'm thinking I'm going to have to stagger the harvest. At the same time, the big one's veils are beginning to tear, so they are going to be coming down in the near-term.  From my reading, this seems to be part and parcel with multi-spore grows.  Very dry substrate and the top layer was well-misted at the get go.  At this point, I can see the substrate beginning to recede...Not sure what to do about that yet.

I love this tek.  I was going to go the cake/perlite route but this is SO much more to my liking!!  Have expanded into the mystical world of agar and am hoping to stop singing the multi-spore syringe blues and to take the next giant leap on the learning curve. Thanks all for contributing your experiences and knowledge so that a lonely pilgrim such as myself can start engaging in this remarkable hobby.

Well!  What a difference 10 hours made!!  I woke up to find a whole bunch of flat-tish tops.  So!  I harvested everything and they are currently drying.

THis is a wonderful hobby.  I didn't weigh at this juncture because this was more of a proof of concept project than anything else...I'm glad to see that a few had some heft!

A question about second flush, for those who have trod these paths before...Do folks put another thin top of coir or just let it be.  I soaked it for about 3 hours, per the SFF tek but I'm not clear as to whether common practice throws in another topping in order to address possible side pins.

Thanks to all!  I couldn't be happier!!  Good times!!!

Congratulations on your first grow. Some big fellas there.
You should be good to go as is. I've never added another casing layer.

How are my surface conditions looking? I got a bunch of knots but a lot of them are covered with light fluffy mycelium

Gt has never really been big on surface colonization ime. Just lots of knots poking through at most.

That’s pretty much Exactly how mine is looking I’d take a picture but I’m afraid I would mess up the climate in there removing the lid, do you remember how much yield you got from that first flush?

Here is my first grow and using the shoebox tek. I just snapped the lid on and let it do its thing. Spawned to bulk on 9/7. I didn't add light until maybe a week ago. This is GT from a spore print > agar > oats > coir/verm/spawn 9/7.

Photos taken on 9/18

These were taken last night (9/22/20)

I will take some photos again to show the progress, hope someone finds photos useful for estimated timelines or whatever. YEEE!

I’m getting pretty skinny small mushrooms, could this be from lack of fae? Or that my substrate is too thin? Lighting? These are golden teachers, looks like I am gonna get a pretty weak yield from this first flush

Doesnt look too bad, sometimes they are not heavy fruiters at first. Did you grow from MS?

I had a similar box like that for 1st flush, but it kicked into gear at 2nd flush. It was a MS grow. I am achieving better pinsets when cloning straight from a quick/large mushy or from pin clone on agar.

Yeah they are from Ms syringe, this my first bulk grow my prior attempt at brf pf tek was pretty low yielding too. I will take a spore print from one of the larger mushrooms and transfer it to syringe. There are a lot of pins that are still popping up do you think they will grow as part of the first flush? I’m hoping they don’t abort on me

Nice work AJ.  Some is better than none, right!?  I'm in the middle of my first shoebox grow too.  I'm planning on cloning various fruits to agar.  Hoping to isolate some consistent genetics.  Resulting in fuller more fulfilling flushes.  Spores have a lot of variation.

Question to the boards: what would the downside be too a wetter field capacity?

If you're aiming at more even pinsets, I recommend to clone one of your fruits to agar and go from there. MS has a lot of variation in genetics, but if you clone straight from your fruits it will narrow the genetics down so you will get more even pinsets. Its really not that hard doing the agar and it pays off in consistency and yield. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice I’ll have to buy some agar supplies to get started on that I am guessing that using oats or something other than 1/2 pint brf cakes would also improve yields?

I was getting the same and then decided to use a bag with some holes cut in it rather than the latched lid. Seemed to help with the lack of FAE and mushrooms became much more dense/no more fuzzy feet

Note: the one's in my signature were from before I started using the bag. Decent flush but notice they are somewhat thin

I might try that for second flush, how many holes and how big of a bag?
