I’m not positive what you mean but I think I know. The way you make these shoe boxes is by mixing colonized grain with bulk substrate inside the shoe box, then you put a 1/4” layer of bulk sub on top and it just colonizes and eventually fruits just like that.

The bulk sub and grain mixture is the the equivalent of the vermiculite and brown rice flower you use to make cakes in the pf tek (but with bulk grows you colonize the grain separately) and the top layer you add after mixing is the equivalent of the “roll” part of the dunk n roll.

When I have a flush of 250+ wet grams I’ll put some water in the tub and float the sub for 2-4 hours. If it’s a smaller flush I don’t bother.

What type? Was the first flush way shorter?

B Plus -- I didn't have to dub tub the first flush but they did push the lid open.

256g on the 2nd flush.  In the dehydrator now.

If you are planning on shredding your BRF cakes to spawn to bulk (which I assume is the plan considering the thread you posted the question in), then no, you don't dunk or roll them before shredding them either by hand or with a cheese grater. Then you mix the shredded cake(s) with substrate (coir) according to the the tek, just like you would colonized grain spawn.

I'm going to make my first attempt at shoeboxes in a week or so using this very tek.

About the shoeboxes. The model I got doesn't have latches, the lid basically "clicks" into place. There's no seal and the fit isn't exactly even, but it stays securely in place. Alternatively I can place the lid without clicking, which amounts to 3-5mm of extra gap.

Which would be preferable for this tek?

Those are the more common kind.

I’d keep it snapped until pins start and then try unsnapping it and seeing if it dries out or not.

I know, I went out to get some more shoeboxes, and the entire storage racks are all gone almost everywhere, the same with mason jars also. I used to get those exact same ones with the latches, and now all I can find are the common ones with snap on white or grey lids. I loved the latch ones because you can dial in the FAE a lot better. I'll be spawning my first of the other shoeboxes sometime this week and will be my first time using them. I got 2 jars of RW almost done colonizing, and I got 2 PESA jars also that I was surprised I got good results with because I was just messing around with an old MS syringe I had back from a year ago, and to my amazement the growth and culture turned out to be insane, very ropey and rhizo, inoculated a week before the RW and will be catching up to it already here soon. I've personally never had an MS syringe straight to grain work. I'll need to post pics, but I was thinking since I have 2 jars of each, should I try one of those 12 or 15 quart boxes? I used to put 2 jars of spawn in each shoebox, but I believe that's how my RW fucked up last time - putting in too much spawn and the results were just massive blobbing everywhere - so I'm definitely not doing that again. Everyone tells me that one quart is good enough for a shoebox, so one of them I'm going to be doing shoeboxes, and I think the 2 others I may put into one of those 12 or 15 quart ones. I'm not sure if those will work unmodded as well as the shoeboxes. Hell, I didn't know I was going to end up with this much spawn right now lol.

AKA - have you actually done a shoebox following this exact tek? If so, what did you experience with the SFF route?

Not this exactly, I always just make the coir field cap.

I’d make two shoeboxes probably. All I really run are shoeboxes and underbeds though. I did get some mid sized I think 20ish quart tubs but the couple I’ve used so far didn’t do well for some reason. I’m thinking about putting holes in them but I’m gonna give it another shot first now that it’s cooled off a little bit, I had all kinds of wacky stuff happening between the heat and constant ac.

So there are no holes with polyfill/microspore tape, the lid it hatched shut, and it still works? I thought the spores needed fresh air exchange? Or does the air that gets trapped in the box suffice?

I'm a noob and am completely ignorant. If someone could explain this, I'd appreciate it.

Well I have 4 jars of spawn, 2 RW and 2 PESA. Space is a limiting factor, so I know that I can't make 4 shoeboxes. If I do two shoeboxes, I don't want to put too much spawn and my RW blob all over again, so I was just going to do one in each. There's still some grains on top of my RW that still need to colonize, but the PESA is ready, however I don't want to be making bulk sub in two different days, I would rather do it all together. Not sure what to do...

For ambivalence I recommend making a decision and sticking with it - usually helps

I'd just make the boxes on two separate days. If you don't have the time just make 2 PESA boxes. There's no right or wrong answer, just do what you want.

I bet you can find room for two extra shoeboxes.

If not I’d probably fridge the spawn until the first ones are finished.

That's great, this is exciting stuff, I hope yer not overwhelmed, it's easy to do here.
However I just want to add, you may want to add this to your shoebox TEK.
Munch's Shoebox Method  this follows on nicely with an update to the TEK.

Oh, awesome signup date!

AKA - That’s why I was thinking about doing one of those 12 or 15 quart boxes for my PESA. I could dump both quarts in there, I just don’t want to do that with the RW since my last attempt resulted in almost all blobbing. That’s why I was asking about those kind of boxes... I am going to be spawning tomorrow.

Had some questionable jars and decided to take the shoebox route with this TEK. On day 2 with these pics. A little moister than expected but they seem to be loving it?
