What do you guys and gals think of these as petri dishes?

Amazon Link

They are screw top PP5 polypropylene. Approximately 2.5 inch diameter and 1 inch height, and averaging out at $.72 a piece. My hope is to have something reusable but not as expensive or fragile as glass.

Thank you A.K.A. The containers I was going to purchase have defective lids according to that post.

But they still work perfect.  The lids just unscrew like an 1/8 of a turn.  They come off easier. I still bought them and they work just the same as the normal ones.

all my plates are over grown.
Seeing your lionsmane plates gave me motivation to show mine. And what's fruiting from it. Plus found my "KK" (king kong) Ape clone plate. Had nice fruit in it. I should make new transfers.
Also melmac F2 plates. Grain2agar

I bought those and they work perfectly as Petri dishes George. I never need to increase FAE to a plate anyway, so easier on/off is actually a bonus.

Hobbit, I’m still a noob, but aren’t those LM fruits starved for FAE? They almost look like Coral Tooth.

It depends on your priorities..
If you prefer to have perfect visibility and infinite reusability, glass.
If you think you will drop plates like a toddler, go for something foggy but bouncy. Just squint a little harder and use your imagination with those foggy plastics.

Is it possible to do no-pour with glass?

Ya still need to pour. . . I just call it pre pour. . . :laugh2:

Got me a sous vide last week. . . Poured my first post pour in ages. . . Temp set at 46°C. . .
Poured like a breeze, still a little condensate in the glass petri

I know huh, I like pre-pour too. The term, not the process!

Anyway, I've been pouring at 113F, leaving stacks of 10 in the SAB.
And any leftover agar in the bottle so all cool slowly overnight.
Also been putting a couple plates on top of the stack.

However Mushboy suggested we're getting some auto contams by not wrapping
right away...so I'll try that next.

I mix and heat my agar in a pot on the stove, pour plates on the kitchen counter, cool, foil wrap in stacks of 5, PC for 20.

Awesome, appreciate the knowledge. I’m bulking up my Lion’s Mane production and I may have to switch to glass with how thin the mycelium is.

I totally agree with mushboy on this. . . I hear people leaving their stacks over night i their SAB's and cringe. . . Though if it works for ya. . .

I stopped getting random comtams when I started wrapping as soon as gelled. . . Still get the odd edge contam (from fingers on the edge + condensation). . .

How does leaving the no-pours in the PC to cool overnight a vector? I understand the air inside the PC will exchange despite being relatively sealed, how exactly would contams get in the plates? I leave pretty much everything to cool overnight except when doing multiple cooks in a row, obviously. None of my controls contaminate ever.

I was talking SAB after pouring. . .

As for how. . . My 20 year old high school science will attempt (and fail)

Water vapour at standard pressure is ~1300 times the volume of liquid water. . .

This suggests to me that much of the air in the PC after its cycle, including that in your petri, is from the outside of the PC. . .

I could well be wrong, though sounds plausible. . .

I always pop my PC when the safety drops and tighten my media bottle lids. . . Before the pressure reverses due to cooling. . .

I've always personally found pouring and wrapping dishes with parafilm as soon as they're cool enough to be superior to any of the no pour methods I've used.

I can comfortably pour and wrap a few hundred plates in a day like that and have way more control over outcome.

Plates are cheap and pouring is really easy.
