One person you know you can't trust is Trump.

I don't "trust" him.  But when his whole team says he doesn't get briefed on unverified intelligence, do I make believe they're all lying when I don't really know?

It'd be interesting to learn how someone in intelligence got this information.

Enhanced interrogation maybe?  Or based on past Russian behavior (as was the case with Russia-Gate)?  I don't know.

I am in a minority on the shroomery, as I frequently defend the opposing side when they have a point about something or when my side make believes something about them.  I also attack my side if I think they're wrong.  People here get very confused by that and think it means I prefer the other side.

Also, what was Trump supposed to do with unverified and - even more importantly - unprovable claim that the Russians were paying Taliban to kill the US soldiers? Ask Putin if it is true? Publicly admonish him like Obama did about the interference before the 2016 elections (as if it worked lol)? Send the ICBMs? Activities like this are in the grey area no one talks about and for a good reason. Does anyone here think CIA never paid proxy players to harm the US opponents? What would CIA have done had they been publicly confronted with unverified and unprovable claims that they did? Apologise? Fire the operatives involved? Or - just maybe - privately chuckle and publicly deny? The world is a rough place, especially for troops stationed in war zones. The way you deal with nasty stuff like this is to recipricate - also secretly - to hurt the other guys until they stop.

I accept that there is an area of intelligence/counterintelligence operations the public do not need to know about. It is appalling that the media are discussing classified briefings and publishing the opinions of unnamed retired intelligence people dumping on the current lot. This is making the US look messed up and weak.

They're all valid points, but if the cat is already out of the bag then Trump and Pence are left at best looking like they're completely out of the loop.
If a report turns up showing he didn't read his own intelligence... there's nowhere to go for the pair of them except out the door.

Why were only republican congressmen invited to yesterdays briefing about this bounty?
Circle the wagon much?
If tRump didn't know, he sure as fuck should have.
Worst administration EVER.

Putin2020!

Yeah the five previous ones didnt lie enough for trump and fall in line with his lies. We should definitely trust this sixth person. Trump figures they have good character.

No, I can't just read the NYT.  They charge me to read their fake news, which I won't pay for.

I did see their Twitter account:

https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1278017734031355911

"The U.S. intercepted financial transfer data that bolstered suspicions about Russian bounties on American troops in Afghanistan, officials say"

So this is all based on suspicions that money going to the Taliban accounts is being used to kill US troops?  How about suspicions that it is being used by the Taliban to fight ISIS?  That's what NPR is saying.
Quote:
I mean, we know that the Russians have been in Afghanistan giving the Taliban funding to, you know, take out ISIS.

I have to give you credit for how easily you fall for any fake news the NY Times puts out.  Make a post when there's some actual evidence for a change.

Except we do not know if there is a cat here - the claims are unverified and unproven. As a result of the media publishing illegal, damaging leaks from the classified briefings we will likely never know because no one will co-operate with the US intelligence knowing what they say might end up of the front page of NYT. I would not hesitate to call the outfits willing to compromise the strategic interests of the US for political or commercial gain the enemies of the people.

If we end up with a report disclosing the details of the classified  briefings this is itself will be a disaster for the intelligence gathering ability of the agencies, regardless of what the report concludes. Trump and Pence will probably not be there next year but CIA will and they will not be trusted by anyone - this is a matter of strategic interest which should override any political power games.

 lol I like it, there may or may not be a cat, true.
And what I meant in regards of a 'report' is someone leaking the one Trump may or may not have chosen to ignore.
If that happens to float out of the White House somehow he's gone.

I agree - he is probably gone anyway but I would hate to see the process take down the US intelligence capability. NYT should keep looking for his underpaid mistresses and count his days on the golf course, there is no need to destroy the country.

It’s been four days with at least a decent chance that the intel is true and once again Trump gives Putin every fucking benefit of the doubt. Trump has never publicly scolded Putin about anything. When he does manage to criticize Russian actions, it’s always tempered and never aimed at the leader. The kremlin once tweeted that Trump was weak. Trump said nothing. I’m sorry, but anyone who has paid any attention to the way trump operates knows that nobody gets to publicly insult trump without him returning the favor. Except Putin. I don’t know what it is, but Putin has trump completely under his thumb and someday we’re gonna find out why.

Trump has a very consistent negotiating strategy. He drives hard bargains but is friendly with the leaders. This makes complete sense to me - there is little to be gained by personal attacks against the decision makers. For example we had decades of demonising the NK leaders and absolutely no progress made with the substantive negotiations. Same with China trade, same with Iran, same with Afghanistan.

This may not be how you would do global politics but you have not volunteered for the job.

It would be completely unethical for the NYT to not publish a story like that. If the administration had a good case for them to not publish due to the harm it would cause, then the times might have been convinced to not publish. But without a really compelling rationale for holding off, it is the duty of any journalist to publish when they have information of public interest.

Oh come on trump attacks everyone.

trump spent the first year calling Kim “rocketman”

Also. There is no evidence trump drives a hard bargain. He’s a completely incompetent negotiator. Four years and he hasn’t successfully negotiated anything.

That was Snowden's argument and here are Obama's thought:

"our nation's defense depends in part on the fidelity of those entrusted with our nation's secrets. If any individual who objects to government policy can take it into their own hands to publicly disclose classified information, then we will not be able to keep our people safe, or conduct foreign policy."

So here is the CNN video news item 3:34 minutes long with a title "WH press secretary responds to accusations against Trump".

https://edition.cnn.com/videos/politics/2020/06/30/russia-bounty-intel-trump-kayleigh-mcenany-collins-pkg-tsr-vpx.cnn

Try to guess without watching the length of the clip which actually shows Kayleigh talk

A supplementary task - how long is Joe Biden talking in the linked video for?

I guess a bunch of people started replying to this tweet that Ailes died three years ago trump had to respond to defend himself. He’s such a fragile human.
