It is and it isn't. It just depends on your tools and how lucky you get with knot size and type.

I started these knot clones with a plate called Zapo1A, it was the fluffiest and second fastest growing of my initial zapo germination. I then left a colonized VENTILATED petri dish of it sit for 6 months. I saw that this culture liked to put huge numbers of big knots in the air, like, literally it would grow little pins then put clusters of knots on the pins. They looked like little umbrellas, kinda. I could literally count the caps on the top part of the umbrella so I just plucked out and xferred maybe 5 of them, only 2 survived. It takes a steady hand and CLEAN, NON-CARBON SCORED needle nose tweezers. The carbon scoring will act like velcro on the myc, you wont ever let go of it.

Each of the two surviving cultures(KC2, KC3) ended up being aggressively oxygen seeking. These will climb up walls to pin or even grow outside of the dish seeking oxygen.

For example, here is KC3 making some really weird dish pins. It's hard to tell here but these knot clusters are really funky looking. The first pin it made in this dish was on the cieling!

Tried getting good shots of them but they collect little dew drops making it hard to really clarify what is what.


Here is My attempt to make a sterile zapo print with KC2. It's just some nutritious agar with some water soaked popsicle sticks in it, topped with your average SFD lid. See how aggresively it grew up the wall to make this big pin?


IME with Zapos, leaving a plate to form knots to clone is the best way to start. I did something similar with Subtropicales(semperviva)  with great success.

OooooOoooo I love the scales... Those are some healthy fruits!

The next few flushes should have less of the tight curling of the cap.
They could even get nipply...

No the joc tech fries subtropicalis This is a traditional mono with a fogger piped in the lid so I can manually hydrate it’s not on the timer I just keep an eye on the substrate and adjust as I see fit they definitely do not like a lot of air movement though

Ok will have to see if I can get my hands on some of those ASAP. As of right now my exotic collection consists of Pan. cyan (jams), P. Cyan(wavy caps), p. azures, P. Tampan, and Pan. tropicalis

Mexicana are also on the easy side of exotics. And they are very enjoyable.

I have only been growing galindoi so far of the stone producers, but I have recently germinated Chicon Nindo mexicana and also am propagating a commercial mexicana master. :smile: And still have some spores of mexicana of when Alan Rockefeller went to Huautla, supposedly a new species with a different spore size.

About stones, I would really love to get Pholiotina cyanopus as it is also able to make sclerotia.. and the fruits seem to be pretty damn potent! But it is a rare species and i was not yet able to germinate some very old spores of it i have. Need to talk with someone again who mentioned getting it a while ago.

Hey can you please help me? It seems hard to germinate spores of Psilocybe weraroa transferred off a swab. I guess there arent that many spores on it perhaps. Any tips for germinating them? It's a species I've been wanting to grow for a long time.

    That’s what I thought I ordered when I got the exotics I listed a few posts ago. Unfortunately they sent me something else in replace of that. Which sucks because it’s the one I wanted the most!

    The only thing that there is to do really is to try to make a spore dilution. take a small amount of sterile water and stir your swab in it as best you can then suck up the water put on a dish and spread with a plate spreader (hopefully you grab a spore or two). As for your agar you’re going to want a good bit of gentamicin  in there as it will likely be contaminated to a degree (hopefully with mostly just bacteria) And I would run a heavy nutrient profile to try and get germination this is risky because of the risk of contamination but if you haven’t had success before then they may need a extra boost. Hit a wide spectrum on you agar starch and sugar.
    This is my stubborn spore recipe
    1000ml distilled water  (1000g)
    32g dextrose (sugar)
    16 g malt extract
    16 g peptone
    8g yeast
    20 g agar
    10 g potato starch

    (Optional below)
    .3 g ammonium citrate
    .2 g thiamine
    .2g magnesium phosphate

    Thanks a lot! So you just hit it with various nutrients in case any of them are part of the triggers and usually they have requirements for them to be present not explicitly absent?
    Might throw in maltodextrin and adjust the other carbs a little. :smile:

    Interesting ii will try it - and the spore dilution just helps to hydrate better?

    You never needed to resort to changes in temperature and pH stuff like that, for stubborn exotic spores?

    I have always been uneasy about putting antibiotics in with my stubborn spore agar recipe because I thought antibiotics hindered germination. I'm not super knowledgeable about the biochemistry of it, so please correct me if i'm wrong.

    I hope I am wrong because antibiotics would make that recipe much MUCH easier to work with.
