Awesome tek, Shaper!
First time growing(this decade)and I had a couple questions:

- Looking back at your gifs, I used considerably more pressure to tamp the edges down and also applied light, but firm pressure to flatten the interior surface. The mycelium is growing well, but will having more compacted coir significantly impact fruiting? If so, anything to do about it now?

- My second batch of boxes is colonizing as expected, with the spawn/coir mixture colonizing first before peeking through the surface. My first batch on the other hand, the surface was covered with myc after ~5 days, but not much is happening beneath the surface. Anyone know what causes this growth pattern? Moisture related? I squeezed the living shit out of the coir for all boxes. The first batch has pooling at the edges, so maybe over misting is affecting growth conditions? Idk. Should I wait for the myc to spread down or maybe mix the boxes up and hope for more even growth similar to shaking partially colonized jars?

Fwiw the spawn are rye/puerto rican cubes, which were dunked 10 min before being added to the coir.

Side shots of boxes in question:Surface:
Top box is 1st batch(made 10/1), bottom is 2nd batch(made 10/4):More 2nd batch boxes for comparison:

Poor surface conditions. Probably too wet. Just use 100% coir and follow Sharper's coir prep tek.

Massive side and bottom pins would come from poor surface conditions, you shouldn't need a humidifier with shoebox teks, theyre pretty set and forget, id suggest trying again and not using a humidifier.

Ok guys, another question. Sorry if I'm double posting. Its regarding measurement of coir.

So I have one small size fully colonize spawn left that I just took out of a fridge. The weight of the spawn is about 270g. I've read the this tek and it says 550g of coir for 5 box. This mean about 110g is use per box.

Now, I'm abit confuse since the recommend ratio is 1:1.5. I'm not sure which measurement to go for. Should I go for 110g and ignore whatever my spawn weight is? Or should the coir weight be 405g per box(270g + 135g which is 1:1.5 - I'm super bad at math so please correct me)?

We dont usually use weight for measuring spawn, so what size jar did you fill? We normally use volume for measuring spawn like 1 qt, 1/2 pint etc

Never tried using weight myself but it may work

A quart of what is 946 grams? Quart is a unit of volume, gram is a unit of mass...there's no converting between the two unless you know the density.

Just did a quick google of my own and I'm guessing you found that a quart of water weighs 946 grams. Your spawn is probably quite a bit lighter than that.

Hi Shaper, allow me to be another to say this is an awesome write up.
So 5 days after mixing oats with coir in a 6 qt shoebox, a few spots of coir were a little lighter (dryer).  Your directions were followed precisely (20 seconds of spraying and leaving them alone etc) and I'm wondering if they should get a light spray.  Also, they haven't been opened since they were mixed.  These is consistently water beads on the walls and everything seems like it's growing fast.

Question is, should they be opened occasionally or just leave the lids latched?
What about misting?

I think my only criticism would be the 20 seconds of spraying. Some people have a slower trigger finger. I spray the shit out of it. If you put some dry coir in a clear box and watch from the side, it takes a lot of spraying for the coir to get wet below the surface.

Don't want to speak for Shaper but if your sub is dry you should mist it. The thing about shoeboxes is they let in a good amount of air and there is no way to dial it in like with a mono. All you can do is adjust the amount of water in your sub. If it looks dry mist it. If there is water pooling in the bottom drain it. The idea is to take notice and make adjustments for the next grow whatever they are.

I'm hoping to launch a couple shoeboxes using this tek soon, and this is one of the instructions that my engineery brain is struggling with, too.

I just did a little experiment where I found that, using my biggest spray bottle, spraying just as hard as I could, I could spray about 125 mL in 20 seconds. Coincidentally, I THINK that's close to how much less water ShaperDreaming is using per shoebox, compared to standard field capacity.

Maybe that's a rule of thumb to start from? However much water you don't use during initial hydration, add it back when you spray the surface?

I'm not sure about the size. The place were I bought it, and the jar itself, don't state any info. All I can do is using a ruler to measure the height and the weight of the jar :/ In fact, no one around here use quart or pint at all. So I kinda have to roughly convert things and improvise along the way. In the end what I did was just using the 1:1.5 ratio of -- spawn weight in grams : bulk substrate weight in grams (find spawn weight, find the half of that weight, and add both) -- maybe next time I'll try wrap my head around quart and pint, and find a jar that state those measurements...

Ahhh, if your in a place that use liters for jars or something you can always adjust your measurements to match and just end up with a little extra spawn/substrate

Unfortunately I don’t think you can really make an exact measurement. It depends on the coir and how thick you do the top layer and how hard you can squeeze the coir to get it under field capacity.

My first go was definitely not enough water/spray on the top. Also depends on your own unique growing space conditions. Humidity,  temp, ac, light, how often you are sneaking peeks!! (Don’t remove the lid all the time!) !

Just get it nice and wet and you can always mist it later if it dries out

Hi there, sorry, I caught the plague! I'll do my best to answer things that I saw needing some answers:

The spraying time:
--Seriously, don't stress this too much. It's an estimate. All I'm encouraging is a dryer substrate with a wetter top part. This creates better conditions on the surface so you avoid side/bottom pins. The main point here is that field capacity is much dryer than most people (myself for a while included here) think it is. So, I say aim dry. The key for how long to mist it down is the color of the coir going a healthy shade darker.

Talking about the surface getting a bit dry early on:
--Leave it be until you see mycelium popping through. If the mycelium doesn't show signs of beading, then mist it. Otherwise a little dry is fine, likely the lower coir absorbed it some, which is fine. The best time to add additional water, if you find things are a little dry, would be bottom water when you have pins.

The measurement of grams of things etc:
--These numbers are not hard fast rules. Most of mycology is volume based because there's a lot of air in this work. Good example: a jar that is half filled with grains packed in after coming out of the PC will be 2/3 full as soon as you shake it. Fill it up with mycelium and you'll hit 3/4 pretty fast. In no way will you be able to tell the weight of the jar once it's colonized, so no need to bother trying to estimate.

Can I use X-substrate/X-spawn in place of what you use?
--Yeah, totally, but I don't know how well it will work for you. BRF cakes seem to work pretty well. Most grains seem to work pretty well. Poo though? Well, it can work, but since you're not really "hydrating" that in the same way that you do coir getting the field capacity down will be trickier. Good luck and report results! DnDRnD seems to have had the best success messing with alternative substrates.

~Another key to all this: This is a rough outline that you should follow the first time, then adjust regionally. I'm positive this tek will suck in the south west of the US. Same with like... a tropical region. I'm from the Midwest. This tek is best designed for people who live where you get a full four seasons, outside of that YMMV. So, if you don't get great results try to figure out why (was the substrate too wet? did it dry out too much? did you have poor surface conditions after the myc came up? Did you fruits end up deformed but not mutated?) These are easily answered questions after your first grow, then you play it by ear.

Also, thanks to DnDRnD for all the help in answering questions. Honorary tek author

Same. I mean, I'm not a TC either. I'm just about to hit 22 months of growing on my anniversary date here (10/30), and that's why when I wrote this all up I tried to reference the sources that I used and the TC tek's I adapted in the process. Pretty sure you're likely in the same boat. Good faith advice and all.

I posted in the Getting Started forum, too, so hopefully this isn't excessive. But here are two SFF shoeboxes that were spawned 11 days ago. Today was the first day I lifted the lids, because all of a sudden it looked like I had pins (I did!). What do we think? Most of the surface looks dry to me, but then in places I do see droplets. Also, the pins are super fuzzy.

I don't see any water droplets either, is your lid not shut all the way perhaps? Some of those caps look like they might be a little wet ontop but I'm not totally sure if thats just when I zoom since my screen quality kinda sucks

Id say probably give it a nice misting though

Definitely not to bad  just curious did you use BRF or grains as your spawn?

Edit - reconsidered my original judgement

Yeah, in retrospect the droplets were pretty few and far between when I first opened them up. Lids had been latched literally since spawning. I'm a bit surprised they dried out especially because I would guessed my original field capacity was TOO wet, rather than the other way around. I've misted them heavily since taking this picture and they look a lot better. Blowing up, actually!

Spawn was whole brown rice, actually, not BRF.

Thanks a bunch for the advice and encouragement!

Day 6 after spawning to bulk. I misted on 3 occasions previously because the coir was looking dry. Today I had a few spots of pooled water that I soaked up with a paper towel. I’m now worried I may have over-misted. It might just be water that dropped from the lid. I’m going to leave it alone from here on out. What do you all think? My journal shows my progress if interested.
