Life and Death.
    #26084884 -

Some people love life and others death. For myself lately I feel like both life and death are simply two great mistakes. Life and love are too intense and they just go on and on, I'm searching for it and yet at the same time I don't really want one bit of it. Yet death also seems naturally terrible and dark, well I'm not going to be happy about that now when there are all these great things that have been put in front of me am I? So I'm sitting here wondering why I've been called to live between these two great extremes. It seems there's nothing to be done about it. Would that it never were!

How do you all feel about and relate to these two extremes?

Could be mental illness.  Could be horomones.

Mankind seems destined to bust a nut, a lot of nut.  Most of lifes problems and culturaly designed solutions revolve around busting a nut.

Find comfort darkness, the dark energy of deep mind.  It's not morbid nor gothic or anythign like that.  It's a deep dark current of brain energy that cools the burning fires.  Agony and I are no strangers.  With meditation it's  it even love so much as peace with the unkown and unknowable.

Energy is dark.  So much of what we think we see clearly is illusionary.

I spend little time watching the death channel, more for me to learn and enjoy on the life channel. especially after prescription sunglasses and Nuheara IQ ear buts.

every moment arises fresh and immediately disappears. We constantly are born and die every micro second. It is all  out of our control; both every heart beat and space and time.

We tend to resist what we do not like, and cling to what we do like. Both reactions cause unnecessary stress.

When we die into what we don't like
(for example: washing the dishes cheerfully)
and "become one with the activity"
then we "die into" the activity
and are reborn as a happy dishwasher. *
At the same time we release clinging to what we wanted to do instead.

So we are already constantly being born and dying.
Presumably when we live with this understanding
we are happier.
We no longer look for happiness from external sources,
but work with how we relate to or dance with the world.
And as we are constantly also working with letting go, physical death, may also lose her sting.

This is a brief post. You might enjoy some  of Alan Watts writings, as I believe, he deals with some of the issues that arise from dualistic views.

* Children naturally have this flexibility.
(to adopt different roles ‘at the drop of a hat’).
Where as adults tend to cling to a fixed identity such as:
"I am a republican" or  "I am a democrat"
and take these fixed positions very seriously.

If I should tap it, it has a lovely ring to it. But when I put this glass on the shelf and the wind knocks it over or my elbow brushes it off the table and it falls to the ground and shatters, I say, ‘Of course.’ When I understand that the glass is already broken, every moment with it is precious.”

true
but
like the Aesop's Fable of "Belling the Cat"
the trick is actually putting it into practice

Most are upset by every scratch their car gets,
let alone by an insult,
let alone by illness,
and even more difficult physical pain.

Hence the need for an everyday practice,

I think I'm doing a half decent job of making the best of what's been put in front of me; the knowledge of life and love and my impending demise. It hurts very much sometimes, and other times it is very great, and other times, the mediocre inbetween, it just is.

I'd go so far as to say, I get a little better at it, the longer I am here, and when I cease to be, in that final moment, at least I will have solace in that.

I've lived a really great and exciting life. I try and steer it well. Hey ho.

It's cliche and has been said many times, but we all experienced death before we were born. No need to mourn the return.

so delusion is bliss?  i both agree and disagree equally, at the same time.

we have?  can you prove that death is the absence of life?  and if so, which came first, death or life?

wow, i have no idea what happened with the edit on that post.  total fail

Fair.  But i don't think that death precedes life.  I don't know what to think, but I DO NOT think it is death.

I suppose, to some degree, what one might think of it could be [partially] dependent on their beliefs on afterlife.

I think of myself as a living animal that didn't exist before conception. Like all living things, this body will cease to function as a living creature. The molecules that make up my body were created during the formation of the universe, and will continue, but the living creature will cease to exist. Personally I believe we won't be reborn or go to some other place because there is no evidence to support such a fairly tale. Even a library full of NDE testimonials doesn't impress me. Of course if I die of a heart attack tomorrow and wake up in heaven I'll be delightfully surprised. Heck, I'd be grateful to wake up in Hell.

 Nice.

Lots of people not really answering the question I put forth in this thread, which is fine but I'd like to point it out. How others feel will obviously vary from person to person. My question is how it is for you.

I was thinking about this just the other day. For all of the spiritual mumbo jumbo about reconnecting with the universe after I expire here that often crosses my mind, I think, deep down, that it's probably just wishful thinking and what you say above is far more likely the case. I'll be happy with it either way.

Thanks for showing your appreciation man. It's nice to see you back around.

Could you elaborate on the question?

Thanks, it's good to be back for a while. Although I don't how long I'll stay, sometimes I send myself loopy with this stuff. :stoned:

I'm just hoping people talk about how they personally feel about and relate to their own life and death. Just as you did more or less. Don't think I can elaborate much further than that.

"I'm just hoping people talk about how they personally feel about and relate to their own life and death"

Couple diff requests here

1) why were you born
2)why does life suck
3)how do others feel about it

1) I think has no answer, and doesn't need one
Essentially it wants to know the meaning of life
which presumes you can step out side of your life
objectify it and then assign it A meaning
and I consider this to be an error that is common to our culture

2) All the enlightened teachers, teach not to believe our thoughts,
and to go beyond the illusion of separation.
And separation, is an error that is common to our culture.

If this view is caused by serious depression, it is then a medical matter.

3) how others feel about what would essentially be them objectifying their lives, seems to be hoping someone will have a story, you can relate to, that will relieve your suffering and point a way out.

Personally I think the teaching not to take one's life personally is actually liberating.

i totally agree and feel the same way.  but why do you think that death precedes life?

edit:  i guess what i'm  getting at is death is a concept that is dependent on life, logically.  no life = no death.  if something hasn't been alive yet, logically, it isn't dead.  it just isn't.

Because, as an individual, I did not exist before conception and I don't exist after life ceases. I'm not sure how to distinguish between the two situations in any significant way. I do understand your point, that the end of life is dependent on life itself.

No sir, I just wanted to hear how others feel about their own lives and death because I'm interested to know. I didn't have any agenda for people talking about how life sucks or anything. I'm not hoping for people to point a way out either, I have been reading philosophies of various sages, some the great and the good and others not so much, trying to point a way out and tell others the supposed "best" way to feel about things for years and years and lately I feel pretty done with it all that to be perfectly honest. It creates quite the merry go round with so many influences.
