True(cube)outdoor cult,Not buried old spawn or wood lovers
    #26043349 -

The last post in the outdoor subforum is from 2005 and grows are few and far between. Who does them? Who is planning on them?Favorite links, Tips, recommendations?
In 10 years I have never wanted to grow outside.I guess its the factor of the un-known. Most of us like to control what is going on so indoors is the only way to have control. I spent a lot of time on my garden this year and would like to use all the area around my tomatoes for cube patches.
Search result for outdoor grows usually have amazing results with much less prep.I will be compiling information and post.If anyone out there has any favorite links please post them.
C/poo or H/poo with straw seems to be the only real option.Sometimes lined with cardboard.
Pasteurization of any kind ?
average spawn ratio?
actual tek?

NewfoundFreedom: outdoor cubes on coir and on grass trimmings( not even fully dried)
slartibartfast: Psilocybe galindoi outdoors
empirefire: biggest atl#7 mushrooms i have ever seen in my life! straight compost from a bag not pasteurized (mycotopia)

It won't do squat for the gnats once it's mixed into the substrate.  DE has other benefits though, such as holding a LOT of water, so it's good to use.  At one time, I'd put about a teaspoon of DE per cup of peat in casing and substrate mixes.  It will help provide moisture for the flush.

DE must be totally dry to work on insects.  It works in much the same way a pile of broken glass would cut you up if you had to crawl naked on your belly across it.

I don't have a link or tek. But I do have a pile of subs that's been fruiting for a couple months. I plan to do it again at the end of summer on purposes (this was a lot of boxes that went green as they were pinning I got frustrated and put em in the  fire pit). I like the idea of black kow for beds. Also I think I would make shoe boxes or pf cakes and kinda "plant em" outside when fully colonized. The squirrels here are greedy and are used to eating my grains I toss out, plus it seems beneficial to give the myc a headstart.  I wouldn't mess with a liner personally but some clear plastic to cover it could be useful. I also would pick a spot with less sun. Mine is basically in full sun all day. Whoops. Cool thread I'll def be posting here when I get my "proper" outdoor bed setup.

Thats what im talking about. all these great grows with no info
'
i just read threw 7 pages of that post and the only info was  "use poo" and that he used 25 jars of rye to 4 yards of manure!

I mean I think it was minimalistic. He probably just dug the trench and
buried his spawn/sub mix. He says he used contam spawn even and didnt pasteurize his sub.

Really bad ass grow though

Thats what gets me so amped. If people are getting decent results doing hardly any work then with a decent up to date "TEK" and CLEAN spawn results should be even better.
Alas its hard to find people doing it.

right now my plan is Mix up  10#s spawn to 20# bag of un pasteurized manure. Mix it up, lay it down about 2'x2' or a min of 3.5-4" outline with seaweed. cover with leaves/ grass/ straw/ verm/sand/ whatever. Water, wait...
i plan on doing the same ting but with "dug in" beds under the soil level with walking stones on top.

if slugs become an issue use copper or diatomaceous earth

Because there is no sense, it's inefficient and a pita to care for something that would rather grow inside. I toss my contaminated subs under the shed for novelty purposes myself.

yeah except that is the exact opposite of what i'm talking about.I dont care about your contaminated subs.
No sense? how about because i love growing mushrooms. How about i (will soon)have 20 tubs/buckets taking up to much space already and the ground level of my tomato beds are damp and in the shade wuth dripper hoses already set up. How about because i like to grow just to get a few good pictures.

Outdoor tek. Do everything indoors. Then dig a hole and spawn outside. Use less spawn than you would indoors. And protect the spawn from being eaten by animals if you can. Keep moist and from drying out. I think there's a lack of outdoor teks because by the time you want to do an outdoor grow you don't need one

I would definitely say that cubes prefer to grow outside if they are in the
right zones.

You can spawn contam spawn to straight poo outdoors, soak it, and walk away
and grow a fat flush. No idea where you got the idea that outdoor cult
is a pain and more work than sterile procedure. Only real worry is bugs
and rodents and what not but even that isn't a huge deal if you don't need
to rely on it working.

Yeah we can over simplify again.Just keep it boring AF
Is 2"substrate better or 5?
Is a soaker hose better then overhead watering?
Better/worse companion plants?
mulch?
I have colonized sterilized potting soil before maybe that would be better spawn then 5# bags of grain (no mice)
spawned some mycelium to both unpasteurized and pasteurized dr.earth with cubensis  they  ripped threw the stuff .Despite there being trichoderma mixed into the soil.
Its comprised of composted Fir Bark Fines, Forest Humus, Peat Moss,
and enriched with compostedWorm Castings, Bat Guano, Kelp Meal, and Seaweed Extract, Aloe Vera, Yucca Extract, and Oyster Shell & Dolomite Lime. they colonized soil itself would not fruit. I never spawned it and it eventually contaminated.

Exactly, inside I don't have to deal with cats, rats, bugs, slugs, temperature swings or nosey neighbors but hey, you do you.

And yes I know trich subs will flush outside, etc... minimal prep, just need a 24/7 armed guard lol

Ya I guess this is an agree to disagree deal. Have you ever looked up uncle ricos grows?
He makes tubs indoors then puts them outside with lids off and holes open
to fruit. He lives in hawaii and grows some killer flushes that way.

@bw86- I always saw outdoor as more of a last effort "if it works, it works" kinda thing but a legit documented grow would be cool to see

I have had Mycellieum spawn itself in a very humid fruiting chamber from PF Cakes onto the damp cardboard they were sitting on. Never saw that before, but it was the first time I overlayed the wet Pearlite with cardboard...  :undecided:

Maybe an idea in there for outdoor cubies?

1-12 inches is probably fine. Do some studies to figure out what's best for you if its that concerning. Especially considering no data is out there on outdoor grow depths.

Water is water. Long as its getting what it needs and caps aint perpetually soaked. People water indoors different ways. People mist, bottom water, etc.

As for companion plants i would say grass. To keep them shaded and keep humidity in. Cubes and pans like to grow in open fields and among grass. Besides grass is their food at the root of it all.

It always goes like this for things with little documentation. People want it, doesn't exist. And almost always usually aint going to do it themselves but want someone to do it and do it well documented.

me too.
I havent been around for years, I have years of things i want to do!I cant wait to see albinos outside and PE. (working on Avery's/Melmec)I bet Pans grow great in the tomato garden. Then you definitely need a thinner substrate. I live on the water so most likely I will be using seaweed. Coprinus mushrooms al ways pop up under my seaweed mulch .It holds water really well and cannot be infected by trich.

Does this NEED to be subterrain? as long as the moister is right can it be sitting on top of the soil? Or In large buckets? (container garden with plants or trees)
I plan on filling 5 gallon buckets with holes on the bottom 80% with soil and compost then doing 5#s of spawn+ manure+ then doing a 3 inch layer of soil to plant radishes. What do you think about that?
When i do get around to this(5 weeks) I will do one in a fish tank (cracked bottom) so we can see the layers(watch it contam?)
I  just got my first agar to grain transfers done. Just a few weeks of G2G before i have enough spawn to "play" with.

Outdoor beds are easy AF. Dig a hole, spawn, cover in straw, then water. Iv even have a pach where I dumped a jar of spawn directly on the ground then covered in cow turds I found down the street. It rained like hell one day and some monsters emerged:thumbup:

I would say dump a big jar of lc into a pile of shit. Then cover it with straw or mulch or cardboard, whatever so as to keep it moist.

Subterranean is going to be preferable to above the ground since it will stay damp easier.

Don't overcomplicate it. You just need to get a live culture into a suitable substrate and keep it from getting too dry. Nature will handle the rest

Pest control is the main issue with outdoor grows.
