Sure i can snap pics of water droplets on the bubble wrap. But rite now i have it off and im letting them breath. I will put it back on tonight and snap a pic in the AM. Unless colectivly people think i should just put it on right now.

using wax paper or bubble wrap, etc., creates a mini-fruiting chamber just above the substrate.  It's not a casing.

My only thought for it being detrimental would be if it's creating a better environment for mold than the cubes.  It has been spawned for 2 days and i see myc poking out of the top.
Right now its high 80s- 90s'
After creating grain spawn everything else is done outside. i spawned directly into the ground and large planters. I am using unpasteurized bagged poo/verm with a 1" coir/verm "pseudo" cassing.

basically it looks like this, but outdoors.

Now, I know roger is a legend,  and I don't mean to detract from him.  But when you read his posts you must remember that most of them were 10-20 years ago. He's had 300 posts in the last 5 years.  Most noobs do that in 6 months. And in fact a lot of them are in of topic forums.

A lot has changed, covering the substate like that is not recommended anymore.  Also, probably more importantly- that quote is out of context.  He said to use bubble wrap with tubs. Inside.  In those conditions airflow is already stifled.

Let your shrooms breathe for best results.  If you just have to use the wrap, at least cut holes in it

A possible option for companion plants could be snow peas! Theyre supposed to fixate nitrogen in the soil which helps other plants then take up and use that nitrogen, so while mushrooms and plants are different perhaps they could use that extra nitrogen to? Also planting garlic, onions, and i think chives as well is supposed to help keep rats and squirrels and other critters from digging near where they are planted

mushrooms dont uptake nutrients like plants, they digest their food...  unless the fungi is a mycorrhizal species it doesnt do much with companion plants.  if you ground them up as a soil additive for them to digest it might be beneficial.  :smirk:

How could the quote be out of context. He is describing what bubble wrap is doing. Explain how it is out of date.
The patches are 100% open air outside . i am asking if the micro climate above my cassing is a good thing or dont bother.
I already know what I am going to do. Water it during the dayif needed, bubble wrap at night. I was just curious as to what the communities decision would have been.

But like if the nitrogen is being pumped into the coir/manure/whatever substrate once they colonize it wouldn't they then digest the added nitrogen? Like if you have a rectangle with peas on one end and cubes on the other once the mycelium reached the peas "area" so to speak would they then get the benefit of the added nitrogen as they colonized that part of the substrate?

If you want to experiment with the bubble wrap then I would use it during the day, not the night. My day temps have been 90-100°F and so the microclimate would be beneficial for water retention. At night this is unnecessary and so I would think more air is better. In addition you want the morning dew.

These, harvested today, came from the same barrel I showed an earlier flush in this thread 1 month ago. There are still more pinning meow. I keep the whole thing under my porch for shade.

Hmm... it's possible the bubble wrap may refract the sun, and create extreme hot spots... like a magnifying glass cooking ants. Idk how realistic that is. Just a thought

I would recommend not having your mush patch in full sun.

Its not full sun i guess i did make it sound like that by saying 100% open air outside. I meant no fruiting chamber.
They are in a lattice hoop house that you can walk in covered by cucumbers and melons tat get watered daily.

Right on, like I said mine is fully under the porch and so almost full shade. Water easily pours through the cracks when it rains and the barrel drains through the original hole at the one end. At first I kept it too close to the edge and it would recieve more sunlight/heat. Now I put it on rails and push it far enough under there is no real direct sun.

I just read the whole thread and would love to see some more info and tests on (true) outdoor cultivation. Please update us an all your attempt please BW.

What hardiness zone are you in?

I don't have any hpoo atm so am probably to late to start this year, but I do have a few contaminated jars that I might now try spawn outside with coir as an experiment.

You dont need hpoo. USDA 6. How contaminated are you talking about?

I just started building up a good amount of spawn. Besides these few containers and the couple of beds in the ground there is nothing to show.I will surely make post along the way.

Ill try with coir maybe a 1'x1' bed in my garden. The jars either have just one area of mould, yeast or slightly bacterial, I have 5 or 6.

When did you spawn?

Im USDA 9.

Don't mix the moldy ones in with the others. I spawned mine like 6-8 weeks ago it seems but idk. You have plenty of time. I did not crumble my grains, but instead gently slid them out intact from pints and  onto a thin layer of mulch, then covered heavily with mulch.

USDA 6a.

Yeah the poo is definitely optional.  But seems quite beneficial

So only use the yeast/bacterial jars.

Annoyingly I only have normal lids not wide mouth so ill have to break them up a bit but ill try make a well in the mulch for the spawn then mulch over the top.

I do have some straw so maybe coir/straw sub.

Edit: Would pasteurising the straw be necessary?

No. Maybe pour boiling water on it to hydrate it if you're paranoid.  But no. Fuck sterile tea, that's for the noobs growing inside
